i grew up in the 90 s to . and am a huge MC fan too . but he is saying the exact opp to what K Dub, RC, REED ,PING , SHORT ,LANSTON, FRO, etc etc , the list goes on and on . i just find it such a weird thing to come out with . if a guy on vital came out and said just this everyone would be going to town on him . there s no way he wins an outdoor race with a stock motor with a 250 cc two stroke. even if he had full factory suspension . it has been said many times that its possible to do that now with the power of a stock 450 engine . maybe his quote was took down wrong . because i just cant believe that he believe that
He said when he raced in the winter in Europe. He didn't say pro nationals.

I was grateful to be taught that your suspension is paramount. That said, its a lot like our tax code. A lot of smart folks around dirt bikes, but still many most likely not dialed in with their suspension.
I would not be overly shocked to see a readjustment (read reduction) of the engine displacement/classes in a few years.

I think 450 stock vs factory bike the difference lies in the electronics where they are getting into traction control. but these bikes have so much power. I think the big difference is getting more power out of a two stroke was a little harder and still have reliability was a problem.

but i think the overall difference is cost. 4t's are very cost prohibitive. for a full race motor you'll drop 4-5k? where as a twostroke you could get away with just a p&p on the cheap and have the left over money to go racing

Last week at the USGP I saw three four strokes shell/grenade/break but don't ever remember three two stroke engines blowing up at a pro race
true i see bikes blowing up all the time because theyre already being pushed to the limits. what im refering to was the power difference between a factory bike and a privateer. a two stroke could get away with making a little gain due to the nature of racing a two stroke because mistakes were prevalent where as a 4stroke covers for some mistakes and making a power difference more important

This thread reminds me of a guy I see every now and then at a local practice track. The dude has a 14' Kawi 450. Probably early to mid 30's and back of the pack Junior speed. He has over 15K invested in PC stuff on the motor and suspension. I just shake my head and laugh a little inside when I blow by him on my old stock 06' RM 250 2 stroke haha.

The funny thing is , he kind of boasts about it a little. Last time I chatted with him he was saying with the cost of the bike itself and all the mods , he had about $25,000K wrapped up into that thing. He asked how much I got my RM for , and I just said with a smile on my face " $3000.00." haha.....you just can't help but feel a little " win " inside yourself in moments like that haha. Laughing
You know the old saying, "I would rather ride fast on a slow bike that slow on a fast bike".

I'm that guy, Jeffro. Maybe not back of the pack anymore so to some I may not look like such a douche with DUBYA wheels and a Dubach pipe, ENZO suspension now, but I used to be VET beginner with carbon skid-plates, fork guards, wheelsets, tons of mods and would get smoked by guys on stock bikes! Smile AND...worst of all, no sponsors and paid full retail for all that stuff!

Just to give you the perspective from the other guys side, because my close group of friends were the same mod freaks as me, I would say 90% of spending the $ on the mods wasn't because we thought we would win or go faster, it was more about pride of owning the bike and customizing it to make it different then the other fat, 30+ weekend warriors out there. It made us feel good i guess, since we certainly weren't winning.

Now, i'm very humbled and proud to say that 99% of the names on my graphic kits are actual, real sponsors and I'm proud to run their logos. Honestly, that was a milestone event for me and moto. Smile

Oh yeah man , I get it. I have been known to put a little bling into my bikes , but mostly just try to keep my bike clean and over maintenance it. Nothing wrong with what that guy does , and to each their own. I was just trying to say that I was out there having just as much fun out there on my 10yr old $3000 bike. A new 250F or 450F will be in my shop come spring time.

And would you see just four stroke displacements being decreased or the two stroke limits as well?

Exactly.

Who here honestly feels their 450 is under powered and that 60+ HP is necessary? (and is usable)
Carmichael said it best...he once said they could make more power than he could use with a 450. He went on to say he was going as fast as his front brake would allow. Something to think about there...

I raced a local vets race a couple of years ago and won the first two motos against modern bikes on my CR500.

Then in the third moto I went out on a 1980 twin shock Suzuki and won that one too.

I was farther ahead on the Honda but nonetheless It's not all about the bike.

That said, I just bought a 2015 450 KTM and that is far and away the best bike I've ever ridden. Better than any 80s/90s factory bike that I rode. There is nothing that I can imagine wanting to change on that motorcycle.

Since the four strokes dominate the results, the four stroke are too big, both classes. Decrease the four stroke displacement 20 or 40 cc per year till parity is reached. The ruling bodies should be not be picking the winning and losing technologies.

Either that or give the four stroke a 6 db lower sound limit.

They put money in an already fast engine for a couple reasons. One so it will survive and two so they can move the power around to the riders liking.
