Hi !

I just checked the free practice results @ the Mexican GP, and I am surprised at 19 riders are on the gate in both class.

Please not another GP vs AMA debate, the ones here are factory and it costs too much to any privateer to travel the world.

I am just wondering what the cost is to line up.
FIM Licence ?
FIM 1 GP fee ?

Cheers !

I would like to know this too. Also, I had an ama pro license in 2010-11, how hard is it to race GPs?

I know this horse has been beaten to death billion times, but if there's 19 riders lining up in a world championship round it's a complete joke.

So, if you`re a privateer, you need around 2000 bucks to enter one GP.

So a washed up 35 year old local B rider with a pro-license and a pocket full of cash could show up and earn a point in the GP MX1 class by default? If anyone DNF'd,

Something is wrong with that. Didn't everyone beat up on the GP series maybe a year ago when Ms. Balbi earned point(s)?

Maybe they should pay racers $100 cash in start money for a qualifying position. Then, at least they would attract some locals and fill the gate to make it look legit. Then again, maybe they don't want guys going 3 and 4 laps down in a moto...

Thanks Kongol, good info ! That is steep, but in the other hand, that is a GP !

Also, sorry if it looks like a difficult question, but any idea about the fee to enter the MXdN as well ?

I don't have a problem with 19 riders on a gate but they should have a cut through qualifying for any unproven riders. This way, a rider who is a GP regular can crash out on Saturday and get last gate pick Sunday. A local who is 20 seconds off the pace wouldn't qualify.

It costs 10,000 Euro per season, or 1,000 for a Wild Card, if you are approved of course, and you must enter through a Youthstream, approved team

I imagine it could be more of a "mexico" thing as opposed to a GP thing.

He'd probably tell you it was a walk in the park. Won the second GP he ever entered.

USGP fees in 2010:

Team Rider Entry(Team must be approved by FIM): 10,000 Euro per rider(in 2010 the euro-dollar exchange rate was $1.40 in January...so $14,000 USD per rider).

Entry Fee: Entry fee was around $1000 per round(team paid it)

Start Permission each race(insurance policy needed-US policy was not valid for FIM): $200 and moved up to $225 if I remember right.

FIM license:$900

Approx. fee to hold GP $400k (I do believe this fee is negotiable depending on the interest of MXGP...for Dubai the government just bought one less Rolls Royce this year to pay for the race) I would speculate that Glen Helen has very special arrangements, since USGP really wants/needs US interest.

Glen Helen USGP: I do believe the entry was lower for American racers. I am thinking it was $400. Racers that hold 450 licenses do not have to buy a license, since the 450 class is governed by the FIM. Been a few years, but that is what I remember.

Not trying to start a war here , but some of the GP followers on here give the American series crap for having the 21st - 40th place guys out there , sometimes getting lapped. But in the GP's , basically anyone who shell's the cash out can race it. Doesn't matter how slow that person is. Some of the Mexican riders this weekend are a perfect example. They wouldn't of had a prayer in hell in making a 40 man national gate , but they raced the GP.

I get it though. It is cool that they let some of the local fast guys line up , but seriously it's very ironic that we get shit for our privateers in the 21st - 40th place , if you know what I mean.

Here , they earn that top 40 spot. A GP , you just pay the fee and you race.

2 years ago for a wildcard race at your home gp it was £1000 entry
9/14/2015 11:25am
FIM international license 1250 euro or something

Entree fee as a wildcard rider mx2 class 1000 euro
Entree fee as a wildcard roder mmgp class 1800 euro

Entree fee as a rider within a signed up team for all the rounds 400 euro

so if you can count 18 rounds with 15 base riders thats 18x400 PLUS all wildcard riders throughout the year

For comparison reasons, doing one AMA national costs ~$800. Then $300 for every national after that first one.

It's a joke that any rider should have to pay an entry fee on either side of the pond!!!!! Brutal!

when I was drag boat racing the first race was around five hundred bucks and every race after was about three. It cost to play.

I just pulled up the 450 lap times from 2nd moto at Iron Man national. Travis Marsh # 431's best lap of the 2nd moto was 2 minutes, 43 seconds. Over 20 seconds a lap slower than Ryan Dungey. He wasn't alone and there were a bunch of riders with similar best lap times.

Now, at last weeks GP in Mexico, there were some Mexican riders who were way off the pace and around 25 seconds a lap down on Febvre so there were slower riders at both races.

At Iron Man, Only about 19 riders had best lap times within 10 seconds of the lead rider. In Mexico, there were 14 riders within 10 seconds of the leader and 11 riders within 2 seconds of the leaders best lap time.

So my question to you is, apart from the start of the race, how exciting is it for you to watch the riders in 30-40 place ride around doing laps substantially slower than the leaders? At the end of the season when there are injuries on both sides of the pond, who really cares what is going on outside of the top 10?

Hang on Jeffro, no one gives the American series crap for the 21st - 40th placed guys, it's just used as a counter-argument when people criticise the low gate numbers at the fly-away GP races (see Fat Fingers post above). I think most people would agree that a full gate is better, but it's also fair to say that the slower riders lower down the field are largely irrelevant in the greater scheme of things.

Personally I much prefer to see a gate of riders, for the spectacle as much as anything else. I love the sight of a 40 riders racing towards the first corner and enjoy watching battles throughout the field, or the progress of a specific rider on a bit of a charge.

Jamma....PLENTY of GP guys on here have bashed the 21st - 40th place guys ( Ever read PhilG's posts? ), basically calling them worthless. And my point was , even if only 30 guys showed up to a national , every single one of them has to have a pro card and " earn " their spot on the gate. Some of the GP races ( like Mexico ) had a couple guys out there that didn't look like they should of been. " Qualifying " and " Just having to pay the fee " are two completely separate things. You can not buy your way onto a national starting gate.
