I rank RV just below three guys and I do this because of context toward the sport as a whole and the imprint they left behind... RC, MC, BH, (in any order imo). My next group would be RJ, RV, Stewart, RD. Then below those guys I could rattle off probably half a dozen that were bad asses and dominant at times.

pretty interesting take. personally i think of Damon Bradshaw as well, even though he didn't win the championships like the others.

IMO, you need to hold some kind of record and/or records to be in the top of all time. With that said:

125, 250, 250F, 450F SX&MX combined:

1. RC
2. JS
3. MC
4. RV
5. BH
6. RJ
7. RD

James holds most all of the 125/250F records! SX&MX! He has 40 more wins that RV! Perfect season in the 450 class and a almost perfect season in the lites 23/24 moto win season! He won 28 of 31 nationals he entered! There is alot more criteria that goes into it than just titles! IMO, of course

I cant see how James can be put better than RV, 9 championships to 5, and 4 in a row, yes james on his day was the fastest, but championships don't lie, and James has not won enough of them to be there IMO

My list,

1 RC
2 RV
3 MC
4= RJ and Ward
6= Hannah, Stanton and Broc Glover and Dungey,
7/9/2015 5:10pm
and one more thing, RV is the only US rider in the modern era that did not lose as a member of team USA, and i am pretty sure he won his class every time he lined up, Ricky lost at least 3 that i can think of Foxhill, Brazil and Zolder
(of riders that did a few des nations of course)

his "power on" corner speed (aka balance under power) was unmatched by anyone i've ever seen. but it's also on a machine david bailey, rick johnson, jeff ward, damon bradshaw, and even mcgrath didn't have access to.

nonetheless, he owns that as a technique, historically, no one has ever touched. imo, it's this technique (amid sheer speed) that gave him such an edge. he is forever one of the greatest, but where to rank him is beyond my ability.

however, 4 Supercross championships (must less in a row) is hard to argue with.

He ranks second no doubt as far as riders that are from or raced in the USA combined Outdoors and SX.

RC

than a big gap, anyone who does not think RC is clear #1 must be delusional or something.

RV
BH, JMB, RJ and RD soon

as far as grit tenacity and putting it all together in their regimen and on the track, Hannah, Barnett, Carmichael, Villopoto.

Not even close. There is no justification for putting MC, Hannah, or Ward above RV. RV has a much better overall win record and win ratio than the others. RV is the second greatest American motocross/supercross rider of all time. I would put Johnson above Ward any day of the week.

machines change, gravity defying techniques change. unlike baseball, which has a constant, mx has no constant. it's impossible to compare, except for stats, and that's unfair...

Pretty much, except, even in baseball the constants are changing. Athletes are: bigger, stronger, faster, and more skilled. So it equipment and expectations. Monkey see, monkey do better.

Wardy won titles before Johnson. He beat Johnson for titles . He won titles after Johnson was done. Then for good measure , after racing Indy, he comes back and wins 2 Supermoto titles. And throw in some X games titles just for fun. Jeff Ward is one of the most underappreciated mx racers of all time.

I agree, I see Ward as very underrated, as is Dungey, and it could be argued (at least in 85) that Ward did not have as good as equipment as the factory honda boys he beat

Based on? How can he be ranked ahead of RC, who never lost an outdoor title ever, and had two perfect seasons.

That just doesen't add up. The guy was good and id say solidly in the top 3-5 for sure.

RC didn't try MXGP. Ryan did.

Totally agree with the "power on" comment. I've never seen anyone grab a handfull at turn in like RV, it was just crazy to watch!

A rank him as a sore looser.
He won a lot but his last year in MXGP showed no respect to fans or the sport.
