I think getting a bike in a crate is awesome, it should be a service to the customer to expedite the sale for time saved at the dealer and money saved to the customer. Especially on a vehicle like a non DOT compliant machine. That simple. We just got a 2015 250 sx in a crate, a really great experience for the guy getting is first new bike at 29 years old.

The business model of dealers and outside sales reps is out dated to me. I worked at a high end Cycling shop for 13 years. The internet changed everything, customers were no longer land locked.

Bike manufactures like cannondale, trek, specialized, etc.. had similar stipulations to NOT sell there complete new bikes on the internet. But other brands on the rise did.

We would see more and more and more people coming in for service with bikes they purchased online. The boss man couldn't take it, a lot of times would tow the line like motodork, and I get the emotion of it, but running off potential customers didn't do any good.

He never found a way to change with the times, after 22 years, the doors just closed.

DOT or not does not keep someone from suing everyone up the food chain when they crash and claim the bike was not put together properly. The manufacturers would love to sell you a motorcycle in a crate, hell, they would love for you to back your truck up to the factory door and load all the parts for you to assemble the bike yourselves, who needs an assembly line. But because wonderful consumers out there want to point fingers and blame everyone else for there misfortune with lawsuits, a pre-delivery inspection (assembly) form must be signed by the dealer. Nobody is saying you cant then take the bike apart and ship it to wherever you want.

I bet if you looked closely at your bike shops business you would find many different ways that took them down. Some guys just let a business appear to go out of business because they don't have the sack to close and lay off all the employees. Unless they filed BK, I doubt it closed because they didn't have the money to keep going. So you are saying that ordering everything from Amazon is the wave of the future? Everything is a race to the bottom right? Do you think Harley Davidson dealers deliver bikes in crates when sold?
I get that and its a shame in todays world how you can get sued over personal responsibility mistakes.

But. Its done all the time, and with children's health at stake at that. Barbie jeeps, bicycles, big wheels, trampolines, swing sets, etc..

A adult customer signing a contract releasing liability from the dealer is not far fetched.

Actually you proved a point. You shopped locally because for some reason, it was worth it to you. You probably could have saved more money having that food shipped in from China.

Most of it probably was shipped from China.. I think they're secretly watching us.

Good friend wanted a Kubota tractor, local guy is 5 miles away, Friend ended up buying from a dealer right around
100 miles away. Saved $1,400... Local dealer found out & told my friend, "good luck driving all that way getting parts
for it"... I guess you're going to lose either way...

do you hear how pompous you sound trying to save money on a dirtbike that will loss its value like a rock, sound like a chick wanting a deal on a hand bag. Most guys working at a shop will never be able to afford to buy one cash, and work hard for 10 bucks an hour.

Hey guys I have decided to buy a 2016 350 SXF.
I'm in Hawaii and I'm being told they won't have the '16's here until October. That, and they don't deal at all, plus charge you $500 to assemble the bike.
Sooooo, I'd like to see about buying a crated bike and just shipping it here. It's only about $400 to get a crated bike here from Oakland, CA.
Does anyone know any dealers that will make me a good deal on a crated bike?
Thanks

You sound like the guy in the bentley wanting a price break for mounting his crf50 tire. I hope one day all of your customers end up being total jackholes like what people in the dirt bike world have ended up dealing with.
No Shit! They don't give two cents if someone is trying to support a family and pay their bills. Must have a goverment job! Those people are the worst!

I'll always pay more to buy local. Doesn't mean I will pay a ridiculous amount more though.

Swat, just make sure you have some good quality needle nose Vice Grips to install those foot pegs. You can thank me later!Angry

You are making a lot of assumptions. But the "family and pay their bills" part can be said for the customer as well.

Like my dad told me "when you buy something, its your job to save money, the sellers job to make money, a fair deal is in the usually in the middle"

BTW, the original post was about a timeline not necessarily a bottomline. If you could possibly get a 2016 months sooner delivered at your door, some of you would wait to support the families of the local dealership?

Nice local dealer. I think he should have said, "Hey sorry I couldn't match that price , but let me earn your business with providing good repair work and part prices that are fair.

Not if you can afford to ride a dirtbike, it is kinda like wanting a deal on a Rolex, it is a luxury, if you can't afford it buy a timex, but don't be a dick because you can't get a deal on a Rolex. I have no problem with timeline, this post was all about price, that is why he saved 8k on his charger. Will everyone that thinks I am a dick just take a moment and think of it like this. Ask your grandfather if in the 1950's when wanted a new pair of levis if it is was ok to go down to the local store to try on a few pairs on and figure out his sizing so he could order them from a catalog. He will say no, in fact he will probably tell you that the store owner would not like it at all and may punch you in the face for it, and no police officer would even consider arresting the owner, the cop would just look at the guy and say " well you shouldn't be a dick".

Dude, you're probably correct on the assessment of the 1950s but it's 2015. Businesses that could have thrived locally in 1950 would not survive today without thinking more globally, it is a completely different ball game.

I still don't grasp what your issue with the market is, if a Rolex is being sold for $22,000 and I go in and offer 4,000, they can tell me to fuck off. They can all stick to the price of 22,000 or one dealer can choose to say they'll sell it for 17,000. In the end, all of them can tell the customer to eat a dick if they feel like it and know they can get the full 22,000 from someone else.

I guess what you are missing is that I used 1950's as an example but it was that way for 200 yrs in this country, now for the last 25 we have done it Swatdoc's way,and how has that worked out for us in this no respect for anyone world. I understand the if he can get a discount thing, what I am saying is it was considered rude and pompous to ask for a discount of a luxury item from the start of this country up until about 25 yrs ago. This makes me think of a customer that told me it was part of his culture to haggle so much and re-haggle after you have agreed on a deal and shook hands. I told him that part of American culture was to pay a fair price for a good job, and if his culture was so good why did he want to come to America, that was 20 years ago and he has been one of my best customers every since because he too would like to be able to send his kids to college and live in a half way nice house. Reminds me of my Porsche salesman. Sitting down going over the 996 years ago... Gentleman walks in, cleancut, nice guy. Asks another salesman about a Carrera 4 cabrio. A few minutes later, he asks the saleman what type financing Porsche offered for their cars. My salesman looked up and said, "if you have to ask, you cant afford it."

Motocross is the same way. Some call it saving a buck, some call it what it is.

I believe I am paying a fair price - I'm certainly not getting this bike for cost. I just don't believe in over-paying. Motodork - I didn't go into the dealer, test ride a bike, ask all kinds of questions, then order somewhere else - I agree with you on that point - that wouldn't be cool. All i did was go in and ask the salesman what the price and availability would be. He said October and close to 11K. I said thank you and proceeded to shop around. Again, I still go to this dealer and buy other stuff - they still make money off of me for all kinds of things - just not this one purchase.

Look at how many small stores were put put of business by big companies selling at a lower price like Walmart. It's just the way things are now. And Millionaires who can afford luxury items like Rolexes didn't get to be millionaires by throwing their money away - they are some of the most cut throat penny pinchers around.

Newmann - yes I learned that trick after powder coating the frame on my EXC500. Thanks!

Juss - I don't know for sure, but you could try Hawaii Rides up in Wahiawa - if anyone does rent bikes it might be them.

Dork, I highly doubt that you practice what you preach (pay top dollar for luxury's for you and your family) if you do you are your own worst enemy as you "might" be able to afford that house, taxes, and send your kid to college if you would buy things on sale, use coupons, and haggle a little on negotiable items just as everyone else does that "wants/desires" the same for themselves and their families. You should not single out the industry that you are employed from and ignore the rest.... what's good for the goose is good for the gander!

No, shitty trade agreements led to that.

Stay on topic. Is it the dealers fault for losing money, or the customers for asking for the best deal?

Dealer's fault if they can't at least compromise and offer a mutually fair deal, given the chance.

Crazy concept I know
I don't know where you get your ideas but you are getting ridiculous. When buying cars, homes, etc it has always been the custom in this country to haggle. If you think the guy out buying a Porche or BMW is not out looking for the best deal he can get you are in La la land. 99% of the people buying those luxury items are not multi millionaires who have more money than they know what to do with. What I find pompous and rude is some salesman in a luxury car dealer making 50k a year thinking he is better than his customers because he stands around inside a showroom full of high end cars all day; cars he likely will never be able to afford. Nobody is taking a gun to the dealers head and stealing from them. If they can give a competitive price and offer excellent service they will stay in business. If they can't they should get out of that particular business. It is called change, and it happens all the time. Businesses either adapt to the changes or they disappear. I don't know what dealers are like where you live, but around here they are filled with UTV's, street bikes, jet skis, and 4 wheelers with a small number of mx bikes in the back corner. They carry what sells and makes them money. Just as a customer has no obligation to blindly pay whatever the dealer asks, the dealer has no obligation to have a large inventory of bikes he will end up having to sell at cost or at a loss so he carries as few mx bikes as he can and concentrates his business where he turns a profit.

A lot of you are missing the point with all of this.

Manufacturers have strict rules for their dealership network that states quite clearly, you cannot sell new machines still in the crate.

That is exactly what this post was about. How can i get a deal on a bike in a crate shipped to me....

Clearly a disregard for the dealerships. Who cares what the rules are. I want a cheaper bike. Break the rules for me.

Like i said earlier. Warranty should be voided on the bike. The dealer who sold the bike should be reminded by KTM they can lose the dealer status just as quick as they gained it.

I'm sure most dealers bend/break the rules on occasion. Just like we all do in all aspects of life.
