Trace rode the class thinking it was a "Youth" class and not an "Amateur" class.

Guess it was a good thing Trace did not qualify this year in this class as it would have been a MAJOR disappointment for him. Traces B-day is 7-23.

So how does the Schoolboy 12-16 get to run under youth rules and not the 250C 12-16 class?

Bogus I say.. Bogus!

Competition Bulletin 2015-11: Clarification of Age Limitations of 250 C (12-16) Limited Class.

TO: 2015 Rocky Mountain ATV*MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship Participants
FROM: MX Sports
DATE: June 19, 2015

SUBJECT: COMPETITION BULLETIN 2015-11:
Clarification of Age Limitations of 250 C (12-16) Limited Class

It is necessary to set forth the official application of the age rule with regard to the new 250 C (12-16) Limited (Class 6). Section C.2 the 2015 AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship National Supplemental Rules provides:

For Youth classes, the age of the rider on January 1 will determine their age for the reminder of the year. For classes 14-18, the age of the rider is determined by their age as of the first day of National competition (July 28, 2015). For all other classes, the age of the rider is determined as of the date of the event (i.e., Area Qualifier).

The new 250 C (12-16) Limited class is an Amateur class, not a Youth class. Accordingly, the age of the rider is determined as of the date of the event (i.e., Area Qualifier). This provision has been interpreted to mean not only the date of the Area Qualifier, but the Regional and the National. Hence, riders must be between the ages of (12-16) at the time of the Regional in order to be eligible to compete at the Regional, and between the ages of (12-16) as of July 28 - the official date of the National - in order to compete at the National.

This means that riders that turn 17 between the date of the Regional and July 28 may continue to compete at the Regional, but will be prohibited from competing at the National.

We hope this information will alleviate any further confusion or misunderstanding.

I don't have a dog in the hunt, but this should have been clarified at the START of area qualifying, not after most of the regionals have been ran.

that would def be a bummer if he had qualified for the national and had a b-day in b/w the two events. guess you could say he unlucked out. better luck next year.

The way they changed the application of AGE actually hosed me as a Vet racer as well.

My Bday is July 27 and previously the Vet classes were your age as of the first day of the National. So I could always attempt to qualify as a younger age knowing I would turn that age by the National.

There were a few riders at the Red Bud regional who got the bad news. I can see how the confusion would happen, but at the same time you would think that if you are riding the amateur regional instead of the youth you would fall under the amateur rules.

Again, it would be an easy mistake to make.

I looked into this early on before we started the Area qualifiers and read under the rules they posted that it was to be held at the Amateur Regional and was under those rules.

This email that you posted came out because there were several people who: A) did not read the rules correctly to begin with or B ) thought they could beat the system.

C class is and will always be an Amateur class.

Schoolboy is a B/C class .. which I am sure you know..

This gives the kids coming off mini bikes that are not fast enough to run B a shot at something.. I like the class. But, I have already seen some of the up and coming hot shoes in the Supermini classes switching over to this class to try and win a title.

I may be out of the loop but thought if you raced any mini class at LL you are not eligible for any of the "C" classes?

You're 100% right. Following the written rule, any kids that ran supermini or any other class at LL can't qualify in the 250C 12-16 or any other C class.

By creating this class, MX Sports, unfortunately, gave themselves another class that will require heavy policing in the future. Everyone wants to play the "...but..but...but, he was hurt for 2 years!!" card. I say eliminate the C classes all together at LL, no need for them to me, but I do realize they are big money makers for MX Sports, so they will continue to be the joke of the week.

Originally, there were no C classes at LL, and it was big accomplishment to even race there. I really think there are too many classes there and it should be a much smaller, elite race over 3-4 days. Maybe I'm just bitter because we couldn't afford to spend a whole week there after easily qualifying in the B class back in the day.

There have been C classes since 1986 and before that they had other classes like the 100cc class.

You're right. It's any class period.

Who these "hotshoes" you talking about?

My first year at LL was 2003 in 250B Stock.

I remember being young AF but you have some time to ponder life during that week and when watching the C class I saw a few riders better than me. I remember thinking.... that kid is the fastest Novice in the USA. Which means you are already a B rider, apparently.

That was 12 years ago. I'm getting old.

The way I understand the age clarification is -

Youth side riders - Age of January 1st

Am side - Age of the rider on the first day of LL's

I can see where the area qualifiers may have been confused since everyone is combined.

by the looks, they did not change the rule, some people had just assumed it was a youth class, and they have clarified it,

I did not read the initial rules for this class (if there were any) and assumed since it was a "12-16" age class that the Jan 1 birth-date would be the age guide for the class.

If I had known (or understood the age issue for this class) I would have spent the $$ in some other class for the area and regional qualifiers.

Less classes? And leave all that PROFIT on the table? Not likely. A huge event with too many classes and too many people is only a problem for those that have to sit around waiting all week for a bazillion classes. Not a problem for the folks cashing the checks. If little Timmy wants a national championship in the "250-D-13yr old-5 foot3 to 5 foot 6-sorta stock-home schooled-dad owns a construction company" class , who are we to deny him ?????

So they have a 30+A and a 30+sportsman? That's ridiculous.

If you've raced your whole adult life in the A and Pro class, even A classes at LL, you should have to race the A class. Just my opinion...

No way. That doesn't happen. Sandbagging doesn't happen.

Sportsmen was a way to try eliminate pros from the working man wasn't it ?

Huck, couldn't agree with you more.. Even tho I love to argue with you when ever possible.

If you have an A rider, or past pro you feel is riding in the Sportsman class at LL's just email that name and class to Kip Bigelow at the AMA. If you are uncomfortable with that, send it to me. I'll be sure to get it to the people that can actually do something about it.

We all know sandbagging happens everywhere, but few are willing to point it out to the people that can have a positive impact on the problem. Let's clean it up so there's less to complain about..

It's now 30A,B, and C. If you ever scored a national point you can't ride 30+ and 40+. All other vet classes are open to anyone.

(A pro national point)
