As far as "GOAT" status is concerned, I had him ranked 3rd behind RC and SE, and if he can win the GP title, I would probably rank him 1st. If the GP season keeps going the way it is for him, I don't think I would put him in the top 5! I guess the saying is true! "you're only as good as your last race"!

Win or lose, RV will still go down as one of the best IMO!

Yeah, pretty much a given that nobody will ever be better than RC was. I'd say this affects his legacy 0%.

He is still one of the best of all time. I had a feeling if he wasn't winning over there right away it won't be a big deal to him. This is just his farewell tour. He is doing it to fulfill contract obligations. Nothing more nothing less.

When he overcomes this adversity, I think it will affect his legacy a great deal. I'm not sure he gets above #3 in my book, though. Right now he's still behind RJ, since RJ so completely dominated her and abroad during his too-brief time at the top (AMA riders routinely raced Euros in those days).

4 sx titles in a row will always be his, and I dont think this will effect him,

MC's KTM debacle, and the comeback on the Honda did not effect his legacy,

Who ? RJ? All these name acronyms irritate me sometimes.

No matter how bad the season could for him, it's outweighed by the fact that he came over to give this a go. Regardless of what he does this year, I don't think he's as good as RC or Everts were. But nothing this year effects what he has achieved throughout his career

I don't think it will affect his legacy at all, maybe for some Americans with unrealistic expectations. I know that myself and many others have even more respect for him now. Sure, he's not waxing guys who have been racing this championship for years, coming in a little unprepared doesn't help matters. But the fact that he's obviously giving 100% now and is right up there with the top guys and already has a win, in his first year here.. and probably last year racing, you guys should be proud of him for his effort.

He'll go down as the one with the biggest balls to leave his comfort zone in his prime.

Was and still am a massive fan of both Events and Carmichael, win or lose Villopoto has my respect for doing somthing neither of the Goats did. Hope his luck turns around, his participation in the GPs is great for the sport. Would love to see him come back and take the championship and if it's not to be this year, I hope he sticks around for another go.

They irritate me, too- but at least RJ was Rick Johnson's actual nickname!

Struggles? He kept up with the front pack in first and second moto. He just had a crash. You know what? That happens to everyone in motocross. This is getting ridicolous! Its funny that its mostly the US-members bashing on poto and euros saying he will be alright.

This. All these RV threads... Why don't you guys just support him in stead of doubting him? Seems the European guys overhere believe more in RV than his fellow Americans.

You not putting him in your top 5 is definitely your own opinion and you’re welcome to have it. I’d still put him in the top 3 based on his accomplishments, and + 1 for having the coin purse to pick up and run the GP series while he’s still competitive. You and many others may judge the guy based on his last race (or series) but there are many people that can recognize the reality of what he’s accomplished. I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about McGraths career based on your logic…

I agree, it really is shocking to see how many have changed so quickly. When your guy struggles that's the time you should be supporting him the most

Villopoto is racing a new series on a new team on tracks he has never seen against riders he only knows from racing them once or twice a year, why is anyone surprised its taking him time to adjust?

Roczen pretty much wiped the floor with his competitors before he left the GP's to come here, and it took him some time to adjust before he got to the top of his game again.

Why is Villopoto's situation any different?

Talent is talent, only a fool would think that riders from one side of the Atlantic are so much better than the other.

Why can't people bench race at a place for bench racing?
If I don't blow RV, it does not mean I dislike the guy. I take the information I recive from here and other sites, make an opinion, and hope that people will intelligently agree or disagree with my opinion.

If I don't feel he went over prepared to compete with AC222 and say so, why the fuck does that make me a hater of his?

All the comments like this don't really make sense to me. You can see in his riding and his interviews that RV is giving this thing his100% best effort, as he should be. It seems by saying "this is just his farewell tour" or "he is doing it to fulfill contract obligations" you are saying that he isn't trying his best or doesn't care to try his best, which I think is completely wrong. Would he have looped out if he didn't care about Desalle passing him? Probably not. I think some people's misunderstandings about RV's performance is actually just not understanding how tough the GP's are.

Legacy, people mostly only remember the wins, not the loses, also remembering he went to Europe to race the GP's, which he is doing, so that's a win right there.

Will he win the title, it's not over yet.
Did he boast of winning the title, not to us he didn't.

How does it affect his legacy? If he loses? Not at all. If he wins? It grows.

How many of you remember the end of Broc Glover's racing career? What and where? How did that affect how you think of him?

There is only one Goat and it is Ricky. He was the best even for me over the GP´ guys, like Everts. But Stefan was not far of. But Ricky man oh man that dude was gnarly ! But i dont think RV´s legacy will be destroyed cuz of this.

"Not at all"? I disagree. I beleive it gets tarnished just a tad. The preception of RV is that he was unbeatable, especially in the outdoors. Now with the way the GPs are going, that "immortal" status quickly disappeared! JMO

So let me get this straight, a rider wins 4 SX titles in a row, leaves behind his shot at a 5th straight (and the history books) to go race in a totally new series (one that already has a dominant figure, mind you) and you drop him out of your top 5 because he hasn't just waxed everyone over there? Wow, tough crowd.
