I recently started wearing the Tech 7's and love them so far. I think some of you guys don't know they came out with an all new version about 18 months ago. The buckles are killer, the toe box is way slimmer to get under the shifter, and a lot more comfortable. I had tech 10's before and I liked them but I mostly ride woods and the extra weight and support of the 10's made them harder to shift and wore my weak ass legs out over a 2 hour hare scramble. Can't say a ton about durability yet, soles look great other than the inside toe where it hits the peg when kick starting has a couple small pieces chunked out. The area under the arch looks perfect and I run aftermarket pegs. For $350 they are hard to beat IMHO.
I believe that although they updated most of the boot, they went the other direction with the soles. From our experience, the soles are garbage for even the weekend rider compared to the previous model. The best way to extend the life of any boot is to run stock foot pegs rather than the sharp titanium pegs that the pro guys use.

Mine aren't crazy sharp, they are the arched moose racing pegs that are a little bigger than stock too.

My Tech 10 soles look good still too and they probably have 100 hours on them so maybe I'm just easy on soles.

I run Tech 7's and TCX pro2's....The new Tech 7's are super light and are great for the woods. I have IMS pro pegs with no chunking of the mid sole after 60 hours of trails..... The TCX are my track boots...some of the best IMHO.

I'm in the same boat as the OP.
Tried the Fox Instincts, ok but not very comfy.
Tried the Fox Comp 8's, turd of a boot. Too much plastic, too stiff. My Comp 5's were heaps better
SG 10's felt awesome as soon as I put them on, not sure I want to stump up $550 AUD though
The Gaerne G -Reacts any good? Or will they be similar to the Comp 8 turds? Same price bracket...

I don't know why I'm going to bother posting this since my experience is 1 in a million, but I had sidi crossfires for 3 rides. I hated them and went back to my $120 budget boots. Only time I've ever hurt my foot was with crossfires. Not once, but twice; and in only 3 rides!

My exact experience. I love the looks of the Instincts and thought for sure that's what I'd buy...after trying them on though, I kept looking. A-stars felt pretty good but as soon as I put on the SG10's I knew that was it! Haven't been disappointed either!

Step it up and buy the worlds best boots: Alpinestars Tech 10.

Ask anyone who has busted an ankle badly and they will tell you to go with the best boots you can afford.

If you cant afford new ones, see if there are 2nd hand tech 10's around.

I have tried every boot more or less, nothing beats a-stars ankle imo.

I finally found a pair of Sidi Charger boots. They are just like the crossfires only lighter and a bit less quality of materials, but still a really nice boot for way less than the Crossfires. Not sure if they still make them.

I never had the desire to buy used boots, buy many other things used, just not boots

You gotto be trolling... I have a perfectly intact sole after 20 hours and yours are completely gone... wow.

It's really funny to watch you guys argue over the life of a boot. So many factors are involved that makes it useless to ask other people about the life of their boots.

My boots always last a similar amount of time no matter what they are. My last 5 have been Tech 10's, 661 Flight, Tech 8's, Tech 10's and now Sidi Crossfire. The only ones that had a short lifespan were the 661's but that is to be expected because they are cheaper boots. I also use the set I just replaced as practice boots so that new boots last longer.

As long as you buy a top of the line boot that is comfortable for you then you won't have any problems. Faster riders tend to wear things down faster than slower riders just because they are harder on stuff. The best boot available won't last me more than 6 months even if I just use it for racing but then you'll have a guy come on here and say his Tech 8's from 2002 are still fine. Yea, well when you ride twice a year it tends to be easier to keep things nice.

I never broke an ankle in 25 years. Bought some tech 10s and snap goes the ankle. Didn't even crash. Just twisted it. Not blaming the boots, but thought I'd share the other side of the coin.

I've been sold on Gearne for a long time. I've had several pairs of SG-10's in the past and they were good boots. The new ones are even better. I can't say I've tried them, as I've been in SG-12's for the past 6 years. The new SG-12 toe box is a lot smaller and the boots are incredibly comfortable. Im sure the SG-10's are a better bargain, I'm really not sure what the SG-12's offer, over the SG-10's.

A couple of differences:

Weight for size 10's
• SG10 - 4.99lbs
• SG12 - 4.40lbs

Memory Foam
• More memory foam in the toe for SG12

Pivots
• SG10 - Single Pivot
• SG12 - Dual Pivot

Toe Box
• SG10 - Wider
• SG12 - Slimmer than SG10

Shin Plate
• SG12 - More shin protection

Size
• SG10 - larger in overall size

I bought a pair of Instincts but have yet to ride with them (freaking NW PA). But if you cant afford premium then I'd say the most positive reviews of "mid grade" boots would be the Gearne G-react. I did find closeout on my Instincts for just under $300 for last years model year. They run WAY small though. I wear a size 11 in my Tech 8's but I had to go to a 13 in the Instincts.

I've just been looking at the forma predators, look like a hell of a boot, especially for the price tag. I'll have to try find a local stockist so I can try a pair on.

Look at the Fox Instincts. They feel a sneaker and require no break in.
I just picked up a pair of the new Fox Instincts. They took about a lap to break in. I came from a pair of tech 10's. It was a little wierd without a bootie and moving to a hinged boot. Got to say I love them though. The new instincts run true to size, I heard the older ones had some sizing issues. No complaints about the buckles, way better than my older tech 10's that popped off all the time.

I have had my SG12's since 2009. They need to be replaced but don't have to be replaced. Awesome boots.

Stick with the italians. Sidi or Gaerne. Sidi is a bit more narrow.

What about instincts?
I went from tech 7s to the new instincts and absolutely love them. Despite Fox saying they fixed the sizing for the current model I still had to go up a size.

The instincts are very grippy on the side and help grip the bike a lot which is good for me because I grip the bike a lot with my legs. They are also very comfortable however they do squeak when I walk around in them.

Thought I'd update you guy's. I was pretty much set on buying myself a pair or crossfire srs, after almost everyone I spoke to regarding boots recommended them. Until I went to my local dealer who had a pair of Astars tech 8 which he bought direct from alpinestars after they'd been used for a photo shoot. Believe me guys these boots were new with a little bit of dust on them. The selling point - I paid £160 (they retail for around £350 here) bargain! They were a size bigger than I thought I'd need but when I tried them on they felt like slippers.
I wore them today out on the bike and so far am really happy with them, extremely comfortable and feel very protective, lets hope they last and don't fall apart any time soon.
