I'm sorry, but can they not give the FACTORY riders a decent freakin track to practice on over there. That was pure shit!. In fact every track i've seen him ride on over there has been shit. Good God...the local shit tracks around here are better than that one. It also looks so damn unprofessional having a volkswagen van to test out of. No wonder it's considered a second rate series...what a joke...
I wonder if it has anything to do with why the mxgp guys are so good on those rough tracks and the US guys always say they are rougher than they're used to.. Would make sense to ride a fuckin turd track all the time.

Out of the "comfort zone" of being pampered and riding freshly groomed US track, yikes, real motocross!

There are tractors and pots of jam all over Europe! hehe...

In all seriousness though, why would he want to practice on something groomed –which is he pretty well versed on–when a lot of the tracks are sketchy and diverse over there.

He's been doing the right thing imo...

RV going back to roots. Just go ride. Who cares if it's a groomed chocolate cake loam track. Just pin it.

Think he misses the boring romp of riding/test/training on the same SX track day after day, month after month?? Speed demon, just loves to pin it!!!!

If RV can't handle it when they return to the real tracks in Europe and he wants to quit then Mr Longo will make a rule where US riders get a special groomed track just for them to race on right beside the tough guys tracks of the GP circus.RV won't finish the season intact. My prediction, carve it in stone.

Do you have anything else to add. Every post has been the same thing, RV won't make it through the season. It's like you are rooting for him to get hurt. You have no way of knowing what's going to happen. RV going to the GPs is the best thing that's happened to the MXGPs in a long time. It's brought tons of new fans to pay attention to the MXGP's, so just quit predicting, sit back and enjoy some great races.

You are right about the hype of RV stepping up to the Circus. The reason I have nothing to add is because there is nothing to add, The RV hype is great but the actual fact that the MX1 class has the strongest field I can remember can't be denied. Factory Kawaski is based in the Netherlands which predominantly consists of sand tracks. Most of northern Europe is freezing cold and wet/snowing right now so teams tend to train down south where the temperature is a littler warmer and there are a wider variety of tracks.

The team headed down to the Island of Sardinia where they could choose between a selection of tracks situated in close proximity and presumably - due to the nature of being on a small Island - keep a relatively low profile. On their way down south they stopped off at a track in Marseille (France) to test for a few days (shown in the official Kawi promotional video released last week). Then they got a ferry over to the Island of Corsica and rode the track shown in this thread, before boarding another boat to Sardinia where they based themselves for the last two weeks. It's possible that they hadn't planned to ride that track on Corsica at all to begin with, but their passage to Sardinia was delayed by a day or two thanks to rough seas so they may have just taken the opportunity to ride while they were there. You have to realise that for six or seven months of the year that track is baked in sunshine so there is very little in the way of drainage when it rains in Winter.

January/Feb are the coldest and wettest months of the year for most of Europe, but teams still have to try and work around the weather as best they can. They live a very nomadic lifestyle just moving around form place to place usually. Very few tracks are maintained at all during winter, especially hardpack tracks that require a lot of prep, and I doubt the teams give track owners much pre-warning before they decide to turn up or monetary incentive to prep the tracks especially for them. The owners probably just toss them the keys and let them get on with it.

Perhaps you guys will also start to realise that the perception that Motocross is somehow more popular in Europe than America is purely a myth. This is one reason why European riders are tempted by a move to California or Florida, where they can train on perfectly groomed tracks in good weather and all year round.

This is the same track in Corsica a little later in the year probably...

And this is Corsica from June to September...

spot on jamma! its a far cry from the facilities they have in America, where most teams can just base themselves in and around California or florida, and have perfectly groomed tracks in the same area, to train on in the sun all year round...

I would imagine most of the teams will be training in Belgium/ Holland from march till October. Most of them are based there, and there are a lot of tracks within close proximity of each other. Mainly sand, most of which don't get graded at all during the week (they just let them get rough and leave them like that) - you may think the track on the video is rubbish, but it will still be good practice/ set up for some of the old school hard pack tracks on the schedule like arco di Trento, talavera, maggiora, teuschental etc

travelling to spain is the only option for a lot of the teams based in Europe in the winter months, Belgium/Holland etc get really bad winters just like we do. Hopefully the weather will pick up in march for my first trip over to Holland this year, but its not uncommon for all the tracks to be shut even in early to mid march due to being too wet or covered in snow....

It's not that bad in Holland with tracks closing during the winter months.
Certainly not closed until March.
Some tracks are closed in December and Januari but you can always find a place to ride if you really want to.
It's all depending on the weather, some tracks can take a lot of rain and some can't.
People who really want to ride go online and find a place which is open that weekend.
9 out of 10 times there's some place still open.

I think we'll probably need the entire year to "explain" to most of the american fans how high level motocross works in Europe...

Why not, after all...

Looks like a great track. Must be amazing to ride when the conditions are right.

My video happened to pause to buffer just as Rattray was getting his pit board. It said 1:50.8, then below it 1:49.0. Could be his laptime against RV's? Or maybe just his last lap compared to his best. Doesn't matter either way i suppose but just thought it was interesting. RV looked like he was more than 1.8 faster than him though

You don't need a semi to go put some laps in,and that track doesn't look much different to Glen Helen when they're not prettied up

Yeah the more I think about it I realise that it was probably a dumb thing to say. RV looked way more than 1.8 faster than him. Rattray did not look comfortable at all, especially compared to RV, but just in general he didn't seem on it.
2/24/2015 4:40am
Got something in the commentary of the video, saying that Villopoto's best is in 1:48, and Rattray's best in 1:50.
2/24/2015 4:45am
In french, I think we would say that this year, Rattray will just be a "porteur d'eau"...

I hope you're wrong, because mud isn't Villopoto's strong point... I know, that was a bad joke...

Actually more time on the tracks before the actual races will be good for RV. He won't be in such a rush trying to figure things out. Have more time to adjust to the tracks and the competition. I think he will like it. Its more laid back which is what he is looking for I believe. As apposed to the mad rush of American mx.

It only takes one miscalculation by TC or any other rider around HIM all weekend to screw up this season. This sport is way to unpredictable to be throwing shit like that at only RV. It could happen to any of them.

Exactly. They've got to keep in mind that they can't win the title at the first round, but they can lose it.
