will be picking up a new 46 in. husky tool box from home depot. was looking for something to put in the drawers. great idea guys thank you!

This is awesome idea.
I have been fighting to make tool trays for years now.
First tried silicone. Made a mold of old trays to make a negative impression of the tray and layout I want then poured the silicone over to make the negative.
Those were really nice but very time consuming and expensive.
Then tried placing the tools in the layout I wanted in the tray. placed a cloth over them and sprayed over that with expanding foam to get the tray.
That was easy and cheap but the expression isn't so good.
Now I'll try this. Looking for the mats.
Can't find the stuff so easy here in South Africa.

Well since you have a drill bit as a profile pic I will suggest a pipe wrench and a sledge hammer. They fix everything.

If you have a deep drawer for your pliers, I would go with a rack like the one that I use for my crimpers and snap ring pliers. It saves a bunch of space.

It took a few hours to do the whole box with one hand. I only cut out the tools in the drawers shown. The other drawers only have a pad cut to size at the bottom. I used a 9mm utility knife to cut them. The trick is to mark them on the back so the sharpie doesn't show on the finished product. The pads were $12 for a pack of 4 at Walmart, but you can probably get them for cheaper in the US.

This is not my own idea, I got it from YouTube. There are lots of ideas on there if you search for DIY tool organization or something similar.

Awesome thread and don't mean to hijack it but I would love to see the tool boxes you guys carry to the track also! Who has it condensed down to the bestest (yes I know that's not a real word) barest necessities?

The latest MXA mag actually has an article on how to organize your tool box. They suggest what tools to put in the top tray and in each drawer.

Ed, they make stuff specifically for that, fits right in the drawers. I did that back in the day to my box when i was a speed junky lol Its awesome! Deffinaly helps if you take your box on the road to the races.

I see an awful lot of tools there that will never get used. I just dont have the money to feed my tool urges.

I would like to see what people take to the races, for me , i always try to rationalize , two sets of spinners , spanners that fit what is on the bike, pliers and a few sockets, and thats it.... nobody needs a 300 pound toolchest in the truck. Its MX , not Roadkill.

My go-to, regular maintenance tools are on pegboard in my garage. I tell at a glance what is missing. T-handles, wrenches, pliers, small hammers and screwdrivers. I do have a huge roll away with sockets, torque wrenches, drills, pneumatics, BFH's, home repair tools and amateur gunsmith stuff. I don't have the chest anally organized but it works for me.

It isn't weird at all if you are like me and hate the new rubberized handles. They still sell them in Red, Orange and Black. I can post up the part number if someone wants them.

Here is something I practice when I work in the garage, I use the 10 tool rule. I never have more than 10 tools out of the box at a time and when I get to 10 I put everything away before I start working. It keeps track of your tool and its so much better when you don't have a bunch of tools all over the garage.

Learned to silhouette a tool box during my time flying with the U.S. Coast Guard. I used a foam block (2 -1/4" thick) to secure my tools. I chose Kaizen Foam (found on EBay). Kaizen foam is made up of layers that you can cut to the depth and peel out as needed. This is good for tools that cannot have their rubber/plastic handles removed to be place in an oven. For most of the tools I chose to place them on a baking sheet in the oven at 375 degrees for about 5-7 minutes. Using tongs to pick up the "HOT" tools I set them of the foam for just very short time and melted the foam to an exact fit. Deep sockets might take a second shot in the oven.
