COMPLETE!!! CR500 Aluminum Frame Conversion Build

Man awesome bike! You have crazy skills! Love to see of a vid of when you fire it up!!

Thanks Kiwi, though I really think I'm a glorified assembler. I can't take all the credit. The people with the real skills are Brett Koufas, Tom Morgan, Jeremy Wilkey, and Troy Cardiel.

I'm really excited that the kick-starter cleared the frame with no issues. That seems to be an often occurrence on these builds.

Here's where I'm at right now. Just waiting on some radiator plumbing parts, a very nice wheelset, and some small miscellaneous items to arrive before she can start digging trenches.

any updated pics on the build yet? I'm in love with those fork tubes.... is that a local company or where did you send suspension off to? and if you don't mind me asking, about how much do you have into the suspension? I'm building a 2002 cr250r right now and my suspension is about to get revalved, sprung, and all that good stuff.

Dan,

As requested:

Thanks for digging my fork tubes, man. I sent the forks out to MX-Tech and am very much looking forward to the setup they have provided me. Once at MX-Tech, the forks were disassembled, and the tubes were sent to Troy and Kim Cardiel at TCR Wheels. They anodized the tubes gold, and hard coated the shock body and fork lugs black. The DLC (black) coating on the lower tubes was done through MX-Tech. Total investment including the "huck" valves (speed sensitive bottoming control), springs, and revalve was right at $2,000.

As you can see, the wheels are just floating on a T-handle and a wooden dowel in the rear, as I finish up rebuilding the brake calipers and get some other small pieces (fender, sprocket/chain, modified skid plate) to complete my 500 odyssey...

It looks like I need to improve my time management... I'm picking up a '01 CR125 in a box on Saturday. We'll see what I can do with that. As of right now the plan is a '99 cylinder punched out to 58mm. That will get its own thread in due time.

Paddy,
Beautiful bike. What gearing are you using? I decided to go with 14/49.

I'm running 14/53 because that was what was on the chassis when it had the four stroke motor in it. So I ride the bike in the taller gears mostly 3rd/ 4th/ 5th to help control the power output ( still makes more power than mortal man can use)
My brother runs 14 /49 on his and loves it.
I'm changing my gearing to 14/49 when I buy new sprockets/ chain.
You will love that bike!!!
Cheers, Pat

Ok! to those of you with a sharp eye... it's not completely done. Aside from safety wiring the grips, I need to install a brake clevis from fasstco along with the cr250 stator assembly. Other than that, it's ready to rip. I'll report back with hopefully some positive experiences in the next two weeks. Until then, enjoy my progress. It only took two years!

Real nice! Sweet color and graphics selection.

I see you're running a reed spacer, no problem with carb to shock spring clearance?
How do you like that TJ seat cover with the speed bumps?

FWIW, try to get your rear wheel all the way back in the adjustment or you might spend
a lot of the time looking at the sky.

Look forward to the ride reports. I think you're going to love it.

Dogger,

Thanks man.

The seat cover is super trick, although I haven't ridden it yet. I have always liked their covers, but this is my first time with the rumble strips. I figured it might be useful on a bike with a Himalayan torque curve.

I was confused about your spacer question, then realized from that angle my Rad Valve looks like a spacer. No issues, clears just fine!

It's funny you mentioned that about my wheelbase. I was just cursing the fact I bought a 114-link.

BTW, thanks for telling me what powder to use on the hubs. They came out great.

Very excited to be at this stage!!!

Awesome work. Whats up with the renthal pad and ODI bars Smile
2/17/2015 6:20am
Haha nice observation. I really didn't jive with look of the ODI white pad, and I had a pretty sweet red Renthal one. Everyone wins now!

So nasty man Great Job

Nasty, hell yeah thanks.
Just rode it for about 15min in a field.

It's a mean SOB! Smoother than I thought it would be, it has a deceptive warp drive. The front wheel lofts pretty easily, and that's with a way-too-rich 55 pilot. Time to start tuning!

Respect the beast,
Wait till you get the jetting nailed! I worked on mine at the shop and did little tweaks with the carb & every adjustment
Requires a test run so I would ride it in the parking lot and it got more reposive with every change!
I put a total of 1hour on the timer in an area 75 yards long x 30 yards wide.(concrete)
Just riding back and forth. It was so fun much to test and ride the bike I. Built.

Your bike is badass enjoy it!
Cheers, Pat

The parts were awesome, instructions were flawless. But, I'm sure it would be easier a second time around. Thanks for swapping tanks with me, as it wasn't worth ruining mine! I see you offer the Y-piece with a cutout for the radiator hoses. That is a nice addition. A lack of a rear mount for the expansion chamber worried me at first, but it's not budging at all.

Thanks for the product, it made it possible!

I couldn't agree with you more. Framing and resurrecting bikes has always been rewarding, but hybrids take the cake.

Could you share the contact numbers for MX Tech and Troy at TCR? Also, what is the effect with the 2000 CR250 ignition (complete system, or just certain pieces) ? Awesome build!

I have a 2001 CR125 frame laying around.... I hear that's a good platform to put a 500 motor into.... Thoughts?

WileCyot,

I am not sure about the 2001 CR125R frame, but we have done conversions on the 02-07 CR125R chassis' and it was pretty difficult due to reshaping the rails. It's obviously not impossible but there are easier conversions, in my opinion. I can see how it would make sense to do that conversion, though, since you have a frame laying around.

Good luck!

my conversion is on an 03 CR 125 chassis. It's a sweet handling package.
