It's actually surprising that this hasn't happened already... it's not like sub 50 second lap times are a new thing...

In my opinion, the joker lane is an absolute bullshit!
This way of doing for the circuit races has already demonstrate that is a shallow artifice. The outcome will be less real passing.
Supercross isn't a circus (and joker lane will shorten still the normal lap times...).

Unfortunately, Monster decides.

Personaly, I dream of : 12 best lap times to the main (2 sessions of qualif, little more longer) - LCQ race for first 20 riders who aren't qualified (maybe little more if they can start from a second line behind), in 10 laps, first 8 go to the main (only 20 riders at the starting gate for narrow the lappers (maybe even less than 20?)) - 2 mains races of 19min+2laps (points like mx). Something like that.
And above all, track with good dirt (coarse silt and maybe very fine sand) and even more : the elaboration of the track, his maintenance and his improvement, "does with method the more brainy". (very often I see a little thing to do for create a line of passing) (with a motocross track, this year Milville show a beginning way...)

They should add a 125 race and only run the main during the night show. It would be good if they made the tracks different instead of the same type of track every week.

What is the goal of Matthes' proposed changes? To make SX more interesting for current fans (who will watch regardless), or to increase the sport's overall viewership? If it's the latter, then he might solicit input from the casual racing fan, versus those already committed to SX.

Motor sports globally has struggled over recent years. If SX has financial viability concerns, more radical changes may be required. Two strokes and longer mains will have almost no impact in securing new fans. What's required is more of an image makeover, something that changes SX from being the half-brother of monster trucks into a more (dare I say) sophisticated product.

Just fix the tracks. Im sure Feld has enough circus ideas of their own.

I like what Jeff said about having the mains as a two moto format.

2 heats + LCQ for the 250 and 450's
2 12 lap motos for the mains for 250's
2 15 lap motos for the mains for 450's

Maybe reset points for the last 6-7 rounds. Maybe award top gate picks at the remainder of the rounds for how you finish
the first 10 or so. But for sure a two moto format would be awesome!

SX is serious business.
Let's keep it that way.
Joker Lanes are for 1 Off Events, PERIOD.
Joker Lanes aren't for a Series.
Joker Lanes are like having a Heavyweight Fighter jumping Rope in a Prize Fight.
Again, SX is serious business.
Like the Outdoors, there's a tough Championship Title on the line.
17 races is incredibly tough especially given the schedule at hand.
No room for error let alone catching a cold!!
Making it any easier takes away from that.
As in other sports, the cream rises to the top.
It always does.
Guys that don't have it always push for change.
I've said it for yrs, work with the top 5 from either division.
Feld, AMA and FIM needs to get back to working and listening to those top 5 riders on track design, etc.
Who else knows better on track design then Top guys who constantly build their own tracks.
Things such as layouts and obstacles that have worked well in the past need to be on a short list.
When those things are clear, use them, reincorporate them as part of the formula.

A 125 class would be amazing. Hearing those bikes screaming was always entertaining. Remember when only Fonseca and Casey Johnson were doing the triples in the main? Slow the tracks down. To easy these days.

I'd be happy to see timed qualifying to go the way of the dodo. Race your way into the evening program is how it should be.

Inverted gate picks don't work. They tried that and the riders all slowed down, pretended to run out of gas, etc...

My only suggestion is to set a variable number of laps each week to make the mains 15+ and 20+ minutes long dependent on the lap times in the qualifiers, with a minimum of 15 and 20 laps.

I would like a triple crown in the middle of the series with 3-10 lap mains. I would also like Holeshot points and heat race win points. Not a fan of joker lane in regar SX, great in the MEC, I just think it should stay there. SX is getting really stale, needs changes badly.

or allow 250cc 2t vs 250cc 4t in the 250 class. That would definitely change things up a bit.

You and Whitey missed the point, I think.

You give points for the heat race, so riders can sandbag but they will give up the points they get in the heat race. You have to balance how many you give for a heat win (or podium, etc.) versus how much it will hurt their start.

We all know how important the start is . I f you really like to mix things up keep qualifying the same to qualify but draw for start positions on all starts I guarantee we would have different results every weekend.

In my opinion..... the racing is not broken.

Counter Argument for Multiple Shorter Races

For those who want to two or three motos with shorter laps, you eliminate any future amazing rides like Stew's 2014 Toronto, RJ's 1987 LA SX, Reed's 2014 pass on Stew for win. Those are just a few examples.

You start to limit the athlete is Supercross. One of the biggest reasons this is the toughest sport in the world, is that you need the strength quickness of a sprinter and the endurance of a cyclist. Baseball, American Football, basketball and not in the same league as moto. Football and MMA rival it.

Joker Lane

A gimmick that's great for MEC.

Points

Not in favor. Who won the most heat race wins in 2014? Villopoto The points at the end of the season would be greater

Exactly what Mitch Payton stated on pulpmx. Wonder of slowing tracks down would limit the amount of injuries?

I agree with a lot of you. My thoughts are:

1. Every SX main event will be 20min plus 2 laps. (easy for TV to schedule for with it being timed)
2. Points for holeshots (and a bonus point system for series holeshot leader given at end of series)
3. Points for most laps lead during a main (bonus at end of year for most laps lead)
4. Fastest qualifier points
5. Bonus at end of year for most main event wins

The easiest thing to adjust would be the points system. And if isn't doesn't work they could just go back.

The joker lane - Feld isn't going to bring in extra dirt in each city just to be used for one lap. And then there is the floor space. I don't think some of the venues have the room for it.

The format - I don't see them changing the format to make the races longer for fear of losing the TV coverage.

Just my two cents.

Depends on why you would want changes, to suit the spectators, promoters, riders or factories?

2 classes: Open Pro and Limited Kids

Open Bikes: I don't care what you ride, 4St , diesel, electric, 2St, hybrid, propane. No production rules. This is the premier class in the world and it shouldn't be handicapped. If you don't have enough $ stay home. 16yrs. old min. No cherry picking career 250 riders and denying spectators the matchup of the best lap time riders. If you aren't ready to ride with the big boys then you will get beat.

Limited bikes: They should be obviously smaller than the big boys so anyone can tell they are a feeder class. Smaller wheels and max 15 yrs. old. Any engine type max horsepower with a dyno in the pre race inspection and sealed tagged components.

Track: Add obstacles that will cause harmless spills. Like Endurocross maybe 2 obstacles per track.Too predictable now. Makes me sleepy. Less ruts, smooth after races. Less separation between lap times. Less hurt riders. Fill in more jumps.

Format: Pros- tournament style with 8 elimination motos, Top guys go to 4 quarterfinals (no direct advancing to main) Then 2 Semi's and the Main Event. Pay the riders in the main real $. I don't care about rest in between motos. That's a lot of motos, so make them shorter with less crap in between and stupid announcers. If you fall and don't qualify you go home. Gate picks by lottery.

Kids - These are not touring pros, the track needs to not kill them. 3 rounds to the main, short motos.

On the subject of scoring, it's not broken, but in my opinion

a system that could theoretically let this happen..

Guy A: 14 wins + a 5th (fell with lead) + mechanical DNS + an 8th (taken out on start) = 379pts.

Guy B: 15 2nds + 2 wins = 380pts. & trophy

..can be improved upon.

Any proposed change must demonstrate a high probability of increasing revenues/income for the entities that finance the racing. Conversely, no change will be implemented that theoretically reduces revenues. Think of it from Feld and the factories' perspective. They have little time or patience for creativity (i.e. classes with vehicles the OEMs do not sell), nor will they consider format changes simply for the sake of change.

Maybe there is a much simpler way to achieve some variety in the starts. Outlaw the use of holeshot devices. Yes, I know it’s fair now because everybody uses them and I know that the best starters will usually gate well anyway. But doing away with holeshot devices will make the bikes more unpredictable out of the hole and it might mean that top riders will get bad starts more often than they do today.

By doing it this way you don’t have to mess with qualifying points or inverted starts. It’s fair, it’s not a gimmick, and it will probably make the starts more exciting. I don't know, just a thought...

Changes I would like made would be as followed...

Qualifying practice: best overall time of 3 laps, these guys are athletes so one lap doesnt tell me who's got it together for duration.

Heat races: 7 laps, 6 advance to main.
Semi races: 7 laps 4 advance to main.
Lcq race: 6 laps 4 advance to main.
Main event program: 24 start, 2 mains 12-15 laps each. After 4 laps if your outside the top 21 riders your flagged off, after 6 laps outside 18th is flagged off, 8th lap outside 15th flagged off. Points stay the same, rider who comes farthest back of the pack forward gets additional 3 points. Joker lane must be hit by everyone unless you've had a pit stop or first turn crash. I liked the idea of this years monster cup start, it seemed to run smooth with the exception that they did join a little dangerously in the stadium. I think if they can make it safe a split start would be good for some bigger stadiums they can fit it inside of.

if they really wanna be generous they should up the holeshot awards and payout from 8th back, they should also have team bonuses for privateer teams that struggle from race to race.
Running 2 mains wouldn't happen simply because of TV time even though it would make it interesting. I think it would just take too long to get everyone restarted. But it's a bit off from what the OP is going for. That wouldn't be a subtle change.

I don't like lappers interfering with the race results any more than anyone else but I just don't agree with flagging them out before the end of the race. The only time I'm in favor of this is if they're rolling the track and clearly not trying. But I don't think that happens very often.

As for making the main events longer/more laps, I like the idea. But the 8,000 lb gorilla in the room is how much dirt they seemingly don't want to bring in. The tracks deteriorate BAD and by the end of the 450 moto, there are some serious kickers and a lot of times plywood is showing. Imagine that with more laps and the same amount of dirt. I wouldn't be in favor of extending the races unless they're willing to bring in more dirt. And it seems like they're just reluctant to do that. And if they do bring in more dirt, I imagine the ticket prices will only go up to pay for it. All of that to say, I just don't think longer races will ever happen.

The TV time is a bit of a cop out excuse. They have time to show JS7 getting cinna-twists from Taco Bell but not enough time to lengthen the race a couple of laps? That irks me a bit but I'm not making the decisions.

I'd bring everything forward by eight hours so I could watch everything at a reasonable time instead of having to set my alarm for 3am.

And please, no Joker lanes!
