I had a buddy years ago that was racing kx500 ' s when he was 14 (Derrick Sims) and he was fast as he__!!!!! He got hurt really bad on a kx125 and just kept riding the kx500 and nobody in our area could stay with him.

I personally find riding a 250 2 stroke or 450 4 stroke easier then a 125 2 stroke or 250 4 stroke.
It makes me a smoother rider, your not just holding the thing wide open everywhere.

Being a kid who moved up to big bikes around 14/15, I recommend the 125 2 stroke. You won't regret it.

when i was 14 my dad threw me on a 89 rm250. coming from a ttr125 (i never raced) it was a huge learning curve. i remember whisky throttling that beast at a track and falling on my but coming back to the van infront of everyone. I think learning to ride that bike ,and the 04yz250 after that, taught me to be more safe with power band and what not. so i don't think 15 is to young.

I personally don't see any reason to throw a 15 year old kid on a 250 2 stroke. Especially if he just rides for fun. If you want to have fun, just hop on a 125.

What about 450 4 stroke? Are they too powerful?

ha ha your kidding right. the biggest issue is your experience, now that we know your not under 120lbs. most suspension places don't want to even try to valve a big bike for someone under 120lbs. personally id get a yz 125 they are good bikes, hold their value and are cheap to buy and operate .while maybe a 250f might be ok to ride to the transistion from a 85 to a 125 is a lot easier being its a two stroke and its cuts the difference in half weight wise. yz 85 -158 lbs, yz 125 190 lbs, 250f 220+ lbs. just something to think about

I've seen 15 year olds haul ass on 450's and 250 two strokes. But a 125 will still make you better in the long run. Are you beating vets on the track with your 85?

If you have ridden since 4 and are 5ft 9in tall and the 125 felt slow then I'd get the 250.

The yz is a good choice ,makes lots of torque ,good to learn on.

I was 15 when I got my first very 250, and I came off an 87 kx 125.
I loved it and adapted to it very quickly.
I was on the 125 for maybe 6 months so I wwasn't exactly a seasoned125 rider, but like I said when I got that brand new, 89 cr 250, it didn't take long at all.
I say go ahead and step on up to a premier class bike. You'll love it.. You'll love the 250 2t, It is what motocross bikes should be, light, powerfull, snappy, super responsive and they handle excellently.
250 2t'a are what motocross bikes were meant to be like... They are as good as it gets.. go for it and never regret one second of it.. they're that good.

You will be faster and have more fun and be safer on a bike like a 125 or even a 250f.

I think you should ride a 125 or 250f before making the jump to a 250. Honestly you might end up being slow as F on a 250 because it's got way more than what you can ever need while on a 125 you can just wring that thing out and get faster the right way

At 15 I was almost 6" and 160lbs. A 250 2 stroke was awesome.

But I spent 2 years on a 125 before I got the 250.

Nope, still riding and racing. But now I'm on a 14 crf 450, and it's ggreat, but if I were 20 years younger, I would be on a 2 stroke, no doubt about it.
I just came off a very highly modified 05 kx 250 last year, and I have to admit the only real advantage the 4 stroke has is rideability, that's it..
They have more lowend, and a stronger roll on.
Everywhere else, the 2 stroke is as good or better... Especially in the weight and handling and the ability to inspire.

If you're going to continue to race and want your skills and confidence to continue to progress rapidly, get the 125 or 250f. If you're not going to race and just play around, get the 125 or 250f. You have a long moto career ahead of you, ride/race the 125 or 250f for a couple years.

I basically went from 80's to 250's the next year. I was 5'8" 125 pounds. I was a much better 250 rider than 125. Use your brain and you will be fine.......ride like a maniac and you'll get a ride in the meat wagon.

I'm going against the grain here. If your a big enough and strong enough kid and you want to ride a 2 stroke and be competitive in the lites class.....i say get the 250 2 stroke. Be at a big disadvantage riding a 125 and racing I think.

What class do you race?

Expirience means alot more than age and size.

I raced my first 250 2 stroke at my first 250B race and right after that race bought a 250F. There not made for everyone.
