If he/she does not have the heart and drive to become better and or push themself.

My buddy started riding at 15 rode beginner up until he was 16 then didnt race, trained and worked hard, came back and started winning C races and went on to win some B races, hese been racing for 2 or 3 years and is looking to go pro end of next year.

Statistically, I'd say the number one sign that your kid won't make a living racing MX is that your kid races MX. What percentage of racers really make a living from racing motocross, if we define making a living as not having to work another job in between races? Maybe 40 or 60 guys in the country by the time you count indoors, outdoors, 250s, 450s and arenacross?

I'm really not trying to crush dreams, do you guys think that number is higher?

I think health can play a big factory.

Even if the kid never was the fastest but he stayed healthy until turning pro. Chance's are he can make it.

But also a kid who is super fast but gets injured a lot can still make it.

If you listen to people like OP.

Nothing personal, just don't tell someone they can't live their dreams.
I agree 100% don't ruin someones dream because of a MAYBE. I remember watching Dungey win his first title at Loretta Lynn in the youth class, that entire week everyone was like "Who is that, where did he come from." Now he is a household moto name, it really depends on the persons drive and how much they are willing to give up. Not saying everyone can do it, but people in here who have never been pro (including myself) have no room to tell other people they cant make it. Nothing wrong with chasing a dream...too bad more people don't have the balls to do the same.

Aerodynamically bumble bees can't fly. No one seems to have told them.

People that say "you can't" need to stay the fuk out of the way of the people that are doing it.

Negativity kills more aspiration that you can imagine and this country now thrives on negativity.

If you've been riding 3 years and your leg flies out like the wings of a bald eagle every time you shift....
If you show up to the track and step out of the truck with full gear on.....
If you have 15 big power bands in your bike....

Yeah, except that what they're doing is blowing all their income, retirements savings, taking a second mortgage out, etc. to fund that dream. Then, when it doesn't come true, the rest of us will be the ones getting social security at a later date, paying the cost of the bank eating their loan, and funding their home schooled kid's attempt to gain employment somewhere in 'the industry'.

People should follow their dreams. They shouldn't push their kids into following the parents dream, and especially if they're sacrificing their financial security. For every Villopoto, there are how many Izzi's? Might as well just buy lottery tickets.

I remember seeing lots of kids that were blazing fast, that everyone knew were going to clean up as pros here in the NW. Only a couple did. Personally I think kids would be better advised to get a job that pays well enough to fund the sport at an amateur level and enjoying it for life.

And what happens if your kid genuinely dreams to make it pro one day? I'm not a father but I can imagine if my son really wanted to do it and worked hard at it, I'd feel like a shitty dad telling him it ain't gonna happen.

Goes back to the other real responses and not comical ones.... If they are young enough and actually work hard let them chase it. But if you have to tell them to work out and tell them to do everything it takes, well don't look good. I realized I couldn't make a living at the national level so I made a living wrenching at It.. Money sucked and don't do it anymore but still lived my dream.

I imagine you'd feel shittier encouraging him and blowing the college fund and your retirement on bikes, and then having neither when it didn't turn out.

I'm all for chasing dreams. Backup plans are wise too.

It becomes apparent very quickly who will make it who will not.

No need to mortgage the house to buy a bike a go racing locally. If you cant dominate locally, dont try to go to the next level.

Also no need to have new *everything* every year, every race and a huge camper to go racing.

Moto on a budget is possible. I won an NESC championship while doing my PhD full time on a bike with only suspension done.

But I'm the kind of guy to cleans tear offs after a moto and reuses them and goes through 1 pair of goggles a year because I replace lenses...

The bumblebee thing is completely false.

Also, if you (as a parent) are a mini-dad...your kid is likely not making a living racing mx. Unless you are an Alessi.

Good one- not to high jack the thread, but there are quite a few guys who have taken an alternative route to decent(sometimes stellar) careers, or at a minimum bloomed later:
Pieck
Dowd
Brayton
Ramsey
Henry
McGrath
Keidrowski
Lamson
Cooper
Tadesco

I'm sure there are more I'm not thinking of right now.
