Ok everyone is missing something here. ADD/ADHD people would not need Adderall to get their brains to work right when riding. ADD/ADHD meds are a type of upper or speed. They mimic Adrenaline which make someone with ADD mind clear and help them focus. Well if you learn about people with ADD they normally are adrenaline junkies. The reason why is they adrenaline clears their mind. So Adderall wouldn't help a rider with ADD because the adrenaline is already doing that.

not saying i dont agree with the topic subject just that there has to be down time as well........the question would then have to be how long after a workout or race are the endorphins naturally working to alleviate ADD symptoms.
I want to get some and try it for myself once......just to see what all the hype is about and test the difference between with or without it.
ADHD medications don't respond to us the same way they would respond to someone that doesn't necessarily need it or is using it without a prescription.
I'm not really trying to argue with you, me_da_racer, but you are wrong. My medication is not an "upper" or "speed" for me (I don't take Adderall). If you took it, then it would probably function as such, but it's not the same for me or anyone else with ADHD.
It doesn't mimic adrenaline like you suggest. I don't know how else to explain it.
But Beefcake brings up a good point about how riding every day would lower the amount his body would make. So maybe I'm wrong.
I was a alpine ski racer growing up, and DH was my best event. People used to ask me about what an adrenaline high that was...and I always had to correct them. When you go 70 mph on skis every day...after a while...it just becomes another day. Keep your hands forward here. Run the skis flat here for a second. Look ahead here. No excitement. You mind has to be too focused...there is no room for excitement.
Finally there is the aspect of the ACTUAL WADA rules and their own TUE criteria, which says that a diagnosed person should NOT stop taking the prescribed medication for an event. Considering that dozens of physicians and sports physiologists consulted on crafting the rules....do you really think your off the cuff opinion is correct...and they are all wrong?
Not saying Stew has ADHD...but if any athlete truly does, the WADA code position is that indicated medication, for them, is not an advantage.
of course drugs will effect everyone differentlty, but amphetamines (adderal, ritalin, METH) have a very similar overall effect on everyone. its disgusting how drug companies have brainwashed people, including irresponsible doctors.
Stop listening to coast to coast radio and read some research papers on it bro. Some dude making up shit on the radio, or some crazy guy writing an exaggerated article is far different than a legit scientific paper.
ADD drugs are used to dumb down those who get board in school as the curriculum does not move fast enough for them, thus they become trouble makers for the teachers who do not care that the ADD student is bright and eager. When that student gets board they stay busy doing other things...yes not good. Ritalin type drugs have been used as a tool for society and a money maker for the drug companies. How many lives have been ruined from this???
The interesting part (and I cannot say I understand this) is that small doses of Ritalin do cause a slowdown in these kids. I witnessed this…plus the stigma of being different and having to take a pill has a real affect on these kids. Yet that same kid can get high with larger doses. I self medicated when I was in High School with rather large doses…….I never raced my motorcycle while using, however I know from personal experience what the use of higher doses had on my riding. The downside was the affect it had on my heart and other body system. I was lucky to have a rather logical mind and stopped using!
I also went through 12 weeks of studies (my son and I were being studied) at the UW School Children Psychology. I was deemed a problem as I was against Ritalin – I was in favor of keeping the child challenged with new and exciting things, be it a fast paced curriculum or racing motorcycles.
In a nasty divorce I was accused of being ADD……was tested as an adult and it was deemed inconclusive….as I had learned to cope by being an over achiever workaholic and a dirt bike racer who could not ride enough.
Yes in some kids (for whatever reason) they may find balance in their lives. For many it was and is a societal error persecuted on our kids.
I commented in an earlier post: If JS is ADD – WADA , the FIM and the AMA just need to be shown the history. Perhaps his test will show that he was within the MG’s prescription? No history for prescriptions then not tickie no washie. If his MG’s were over the prescription amount…well shame on him
Sorry for the ramblings……this is a sensitive topic in my life……
There is a very fine line between the dose that calms, and the dose that get you high.
In my opinion (I am no doctor) adhd is caused largely by society's pace increasing.
There is a massive difference between Hillbillys upbringing where the only media in the house was a suspension service manual he read about 40 000 times, and a modern kid who consumed 40 new viral videos per day, all with 2 second shots and a lot of action.
Hillbilly is going to be calmer and take in the teaching material, modern ADHD kid is going to be staring round the room wondering when the next bit of exciting action is gonna hit him.
(No offense Hikllbilly, just a bullshit example mate)
Pit Row
Most of the heavy weed smokers I know have adhd mindsets.
The negatives of consuming weed heavily outweigh the benefits over time as it makes the user lethargic and the focus erodes in the long term.
A light stimulant such as adderol has the same positive effects with minimal negative effects. I think its the lesser evil for sure.

Different strokes for different folks... if you were brought up just the same way as an adhd kid, I bet you would also suffer from it.
Are we still the only nation that acknowledges this condition?
I dont know man, when i was young what the hell did the guys looking around the room do to make it?
I think less graduate around here percentage wise now so they must still be looking around the room
Or at the 14 yr olds with huge breats,we didnt have that when i was in school either so wtf is really going on?
I gotta go buy some Reynolds wrap
There were a lot more physical / practical jobs available in your day, nowdays nearly every job requires sitting in front of a monitor and concentrating on lame / non physical bullshit for some amount of time.
Also the rich kids mums and dads sure as hell wouldn't have given them an ipad, computer and cable tv in their rooms back then... thats almost the perfect recipe to erode someones concentration level.
Haha we call that stuff "glad wrap" over here dude, kind of funny considering reynolds group is owned by a New Zealander.
Jesus could give a fuck less about racing.
As far as Cox's article talking about how adrenaline helps keep someone who is ADD focused. Someone like James who has been racing for 12 years professionally probably does not get adrenaline spikes from riding with a large lead or someplace around 6th. Therefore, if James truly has ADD then I think the argument can be made that it is unsafe for James to ride without medication. How many times have we seen James crash with a large lead? Thunder Valley a couple years ago immediately comes to mind as well as a few others.
Post a reply to: ADD riders needing adderall to ride is a lie
