What? Do you think that the reason KTM didn't win any American titles is because their electric starters make the bikes uncompetitive? There's no way in holy hell that in 2008 ALL race bikes should be without e-start. If James had the happy button on his works KX yesterday, much shit-talk could have been avoided. But NOOOOOO.....

e-start is for sure top of mind in the replacement bike. KTM, CRF-X or WR. Ideal would be EFI with E-Start

I think EFI would have even helped JS start the bike easier after a fall.
A float bowl full of fuel leaking into a hot 4-stroke engine laying on its side is not a good thing.

I'm pretty sure. JS's bike had a carb all year long in the USA. I don't think they switched to the 09' EFI setup for this race - I could be wrong though.
From what I'm told, the EFI will allow the bike to start right away even if its been flipped over several times.

For me, my '07 YZ450 starts when hot, after a crash, but some days my old bod can't cooperate, compared to hitting a "magic" buttonWhistling

I vote for electric start, over EFI, but am willing to buy both!

The KTM 450 doesn't have a back up kick starter. Low battery=DNF.

You could also damage the starter button in a fall and you are done.

While I understand most of you ride/race MX almost exclusively, I think where the electric start really comes in handy is in cross-country riding. I ride mostly tight woods here in Kentucky, with very technical hill climbs and other obstacles the likes of which I would be willing to bet most of you west coast guys have not experienced. In a situation where you are in a 2-3 hour race, and happen to stall it on a tight, technical, gnarly hill climb, the e-start is a GOD-SEND and allows you to save a ton of energy, not just from kicking the bike, but from wrestling your bike to an angle on the hill where you can actually physically kick your bike.

I myself don't ride a bike with the e-start, but I am jealous everytime I see one of my buddies push that "magic button" after wadding it up on a gnarly hill, and just taking right back off in no time.

hey ole AJ hopefully lets me test the prototype e-start 500 A/F soon! at my ripe old age i need the releif for the right knee. Thankfully cold it's a 3 kick start and once started, it's first kick all day long...... but yep the button is cool. and oh yep a 2 stroke makes it ok to!!!!!! lol

In the old days my Dad's rule was if you could start it you could ride it .

I guess I can throw my 9 YO on a 450 now.

The history of competitive fourstrokes in modern MX is full of "can't re-start, so I lose" stories... remember the '99 L.A. Supercross? Doug Henry on the then-new YZ400 led the entire race, only to stall and get passed by 'erebody...

And I could be wrong, but after having a phenomenal rookie season on the then-new YZ250F, the only thing that kept Ernesto Fonseca from going undefeated in the SX class was when he crashed and stalled at one round.

Electric start is the answer, it doesn't add that much weight, it's not rocket science and it just doesn't make sense to exclude it any longer. There's no gain by not having it.

Yep, I flew out from Iowa for that race. A lot of rain prior to the race, but nice by practice.

19th lap and Henry stalls at a 180-turn. New kid Seb Tortelli passes and wins. Frustrating, after cheering Henry the entire raceWhistling

I guess you did'nt do enough homework the other night because you are being just

I started a tread sometime ago about this same topic. Guy B. even put a poll on the vital home page and the outcome was a landside. Everyone wanted EFI over E-Start.

I really dig the idea of EFI but would still rather have E-Start. My bike starts most times with 1 or 2 kicks (if I turn the gas on), but on a rare occasion (middle of a race) I've had to kick till I was blue.

A friend of mine was a biker back in the 60's, and their rule was that if you couldn't start the bike, you were too drunk to ride it.

Considering that most his bikes at the time had manually adjustable ignitions, compression releases, tickle buttons on the lousy carbs, and pumped-up compression, it actually took some skill to get the bikes to start.



On subject- I'll take EFI over e-start. But I'm sticking with 2-strokes, so take my opinion for what it's worth.

The aftermarket should be all over this. Of all the worthless shit available for mx bikes these days why doesn't someone sell a e-start kit for 450's?
