Mine has 40+ hours of use including 4 Grand Prix races and 6 Hour race at Glen Helen. During the 6 Hour at GH I had a nasty get-off and went sky-ground-sky-ground snap, crackle-pop and broke 3 ribs. I'm sure my head smacked the ground a few times during the carnage but you wouldn't know it by looking at the helmet (there's a small scuff from my LEATT) but I felt completely fine, other than the ribs. This doesn't mean the helmet saved me, it could mean I just didn't smash my head, so take that with a grain of salt.
My background with helmets has been 10+ years of exclusively wearing Shoei motocross helmets. I did get a free Bell Moto8 from an industry friend as well as a Arai...but didn't like them compared to the Shoei. I have a "Shoei-Shaped-Head", but...I did wake up once on the side of a jump at Elsinore asking my bro if I won the race and it was the 3rd lap of practice on a non-race day...so since then, I've been interested in better technology.
Once the 6D helmets were introduced I did a shit-TON of research online, talked to industry friends, talked to online distributors about their customers feedback, talked to 6D in Brea, but it was not until I talked to Doug Dubach at Glen Helen during the World Vet that I made up my mind for good. Doug's been a long time Shoei guy and he was racing the exact same Chaos Blue 6D helmet I have here...while rocking the Shoei sponsor stickers on his bike
Anyway, after about 5 months of use, my only one complaint is I managed to be a fuk-tard and tear a small piece of foam on the head liner, right at the bottom back of the helmet. This was my 7th or 8th time taking it out for a wash but instead of taking my time to pull on each section of the liner and un-snap the liner, I kinda yanked it out in one motion and a thin layer of foam tore away. The foam that tore away was a perfect, thin, even tear and the size two fingers in width and half a finger length, pretty small. So I Gorilla glued it back on there and i'd bet you couldn't tell unless I specefically pointed it out. There's absolutely no change to the comfort or fit of the helmet, it's the section inside, not visible outside and under the liner, just below the "DOT" logo and blue 6D logo in my picture here. Again, 100% operator error.
My final thought is gawd forbid if I did have a life changing head injury, I would always wonder if things would have been different if I had spent an extra couple hundred dollars on the "safer" helmet.
Just my 450cents, your mileage may vary.
I just took delivery of my 6D, $600 OTD. As I mentioned I was going to call you out for seemingly yanking our collective chains. I can see why you wanted to wait though, they couldn't drop ship and had to take delivery then send it out to the customer - what if they found a higher bidder in the mean time? (after dealing with them I'm sure they don't work like that though) My friend asked where I ordered it from and I had to tell him "I let ya know in a few days" BTW I commend you for spending so much on a helmet with a tight budget. I guess we have $600 heads huh? I owe you one Dclutch, you saved me $150 simple as that; if you ever see me on the line and I'm in a better gate than you just ask and I'll trade gate picks with ya
BTW I almost feel like a traitor to Troy Lee, I've enjoyed backing him and whatever he produces way back to the first TLD item I ever bought, a visor - probably one of the first production runs at that. I'll still be running TLD for life from "neck to shin".
Pit Row
Yes dirt gets trapped in the air gap and rattles around.
I heard a rumor that Bell is releasing test info disputing 6D’s claims in the next few weeks. This may have something to do with the new custom helmets coming out where they scan your head and make the helmet fit to the contour of your head. Price tag around $1K…
Though the 6D may prevent concussions I’m not sure it protects as well in a high speed impact?
An independent company would need to conduct tests comparing all of the helmets for true results.
I got mine for $600 OTD
2. How is the protection different from one helmet to another in this area.
I personally use a European Specific Airoh. I believe the European test standards are better suited for MX specific riding.
I think all helmet companies could benefit if testing standards could be defined by the terrain the helmet will be used in.
I am just curious how others come to decisions in regards to safety equipment.
How many incredibly brutal crashes involving pro MX/SX riders have you seen? How many have gotten cracked skulls?
Over the last 5-7 years there have been some pretty bad ones and none of them have resulted in a cracked skull that I am aware of. A brand new(?) helmet design comes out and within a year or two a pro MX/SX rider cracks his skull.
Seems worth examining.
