Since this topic came up again in another thread, I thought I should start one about what caused our injuries. Here's my list of how it happened and what class I was riding:
Busted knee (pro)- another rider came across and clipped my front wheel on a downhill triple
Broken rib (beginner)- Got landed on first lap in practice rolling a double to check it out.
Split open toe (novice)- rider was down behind a jump, no flagman.
Broken foot (pro)- miss timed a rhythm section at A2, lost my balance and foot got stuck under bike
Broken arm and collarbone (pro)- came up short tripling into a rhythm section, went over the bars into face of next jump breaking my collarbone, bike plowed me breaking my arm.
In my case all of my injuries occurred on jumps and were not really bike related. This is kind of an informal poll to see what caused the injuries to people on here since there seems to be disagreement on the other thread.

1. gravity
2. the ground
3. a mixture of both
Eliminate those factors and you have eliminated all injuries, my friend.
Next question.
Broken Femur-Came up short on 80ft tripple.Went over the bars and my knee brace broke my femur.
1 one bike related and 1 wasnt.

It's MX. Everyone gets hurt sooner or later. Don't like the risk? Don't ride. Not directed at you, just in general.
Racers are going fast and pushing there limits. Shit is going to happen. It is a risk everyone takes when on a motorcycle.
Broke foot-coming up short on a 80 ft. triple that he has done 100's time before.
Broke wrist-passing a slower rider over a double and using different line that he hadn't used during race and landed in deep mud.
We stopped riding MX tracks that has lots of supercross stuff. Supercross is not for us.
Broken Ankle (novice)- Got hit by Jimmy Albertson at a Missouri State Race during Big Bike Open and broke the ankle
Broken Femur (beginner)- Lights at a fair race suddenly went out while I was in the whoop section, flipped and broke the femur
Dislocated Hip (Intermediate)- combined with the +25 class, I got landed on in a mud race and dislocated my hip...
Broken Ribs getting landed on rolling the jump that almost killed me above because another Vet C rider had no bussiness jumping.
Broken hand caught a rut on a jump takeoff
Broken right hand hit some ice on a straightaway under some mud.
Concussion. Collided with a Vet C rider in the Air. they ran C & B Together and i was following my friend the C rider.
Broken Collarbone and ribs. Crossrutted in practice over a tiny drop off.
Concussion, broken ribs, slid out in a corner rider behind me couldn't stop, plowed me in the chest.
Torn ACL My band played at the track Saturday night before a race, A drunk scumbag fellow racer kicked me in the knee because the hooker he brought followed me backstage after my set.
yep, I'd figure that's pretty much where the "wheels come off the wagon" for most all of us -
1. an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap
Pit Row
Broken Back and Femur (as a pro) because the promoter didn't have flaggers and someone left their bike on the landing of a jump after they crashed.
Taft, CA July 13th '08.
Being from Visalia you may have heard about it Deetsmx.
Most if not all of my crashes have involved a less experienced rider and a poor decision of theirs (leave a bike on the track, random line changes, etc.)
Broken Navicular- cross rutted a large double
Broken heal- came up short on double
Torn Achileas tendion (in ankle) flat landed little jump (still not 100% after 18 months)
dislocated both shoulders 1 broken- had the sweet panic rev nose dive cooking and could not save it
There is many more little one that dont count.....numerous knock to the head and other parts.
You generally rag doll and bust up an extrimity. Or plant a shoulder/knee and blow it out.
SX crashes break the core:
You generally get compressed into the next obstacle and come to a sudden stop.
Hed, neck, chest trauma. This goes for sx obstacles on an mx track as well.
Its WAY more track than bike.
- Shattered the tibial plateau on left leg - lost focus as to where I was on the track and over jumped a single, landed on the face of the next jump. Another DUH!!!
- 9 stitches in left foot - going from the pits to the track, a kids was going too fast, lost control and ran into me pinching my foot between the bikes. JERK!
maybe my bmx bike was just too powerful. idk.
What I don't get is that some folks bag on the idea of less obstacles on the course because that is less "exciting." In the next breath, you hear that racing is boring because Ricky/James get out front and ride by themselves. To me, those guys are out front because they are one of a handful or riders that can triple, quad, etc. a section that everyone else is doubling, rolling or whatever. Alessi recently got wadded up trying to quad a section that Chad was doing. In a racer's mind, if my competition is doing something to gain a .3 second advantage, then I have to do that also or I won't beat them, all other things being equal.
As I have said in other posts, I love SX and will continue to watch it. However, I would be just as happy seeing safer tracks (i.e., less abrupt obstacles to lawn dart into) and have closer racing.
1. Better bikes - duh
2. Crowded tracks / less places to practice
3. More competition and riders pushing hard to make the doe (back in the day there was no fame (only in the community) or money to be made
4. Mixed classes and skills (I’ve been hurt more times coming out of a line or making a last minute correction for a slow or stubborn rider who won't get out of the way or takes away my line while I'm passing, many times approaching jumps or whoops causing a faster rider to hit a rut, etc.)
5. Better athletes
6. Ill conceived obstacles - many are jumps that most novices should not try, but have to do to be competitive / accepted - rolling some obstacles’ is more dangerous then jumping them in some cases, due to the landed on factor. These same obstacles claim many a great riders also.
I get sick with every new injury / death I read about. We do need solutions, the sport is so expensive, riding areas so limited and injuries so unforgiving, that I don’t think it will be many more years until our beloved sport is done (unless we can get a handle on it)
The pace, because of the above factors...........and guys like RC, Bubba and RV and other ungodly fast front runners.
2) fatigue (what caused me to SHATTER both my ankles)
3) riding wayy over your head
neither track or bike.. its the rider.
