This is WAY premature but just curious what some of your thoughts are as to what bike I should build next? Probably not even in 2014 will I purchase another bike but I'd just like to get an idea of what I want to do. I'm not looking to do an exact Replica of anything.....just want to build an older 2-stroke from ground-up using what I consider "cool" parts haha. Although I LOVE the PC 125's and the mid 90's CR's.....there are just so many of them and that is heading down that "Replica" road where I don't want to go. I'm thinking maybe something along the lines of a 2004 or older steel frame YZ 250? Or how about a KX 250....not too many of those being "re-built". Just kind of rambling here and wanted to get some thoughts flowing.

A 02-04 YZ125 would be sweet, or a bad ass KX500 (not another AF)

YZ would be cool...agree! Problem with a KX500 (super cool though, bad bad machines) is parts would be more difficult to find....such as special Ti parts or of course carbon parts :-)

Don't you need a CR125 to go with your CR250!? An 02-07 CR125 to match your 250 would be the tits!

Another idea would be to build a 90's or early 2000's bike and upgrade is as much as possible. Rather than trying to make it stock and replace everything OEM, make it the best bike you can and see if it can compare to a 2014.

I'm with you on the YZ. Those '04s are VERY coveted bikes.

As much as I am a fan of the YZ's. I still love the look of a tricked out KX.

I think Im gonna have to agree with these two. Kx250s aren't done as often around here, but when they are built they look amazing

In spite of my previous vote for a KX 250...Tron nailed this one on the head. Especially when one remembers the sub 200lb 125s from 70's.

I in the same boat with most everyone so far......steel frame YZ (125 or 250) OR a KX 250......hmmmm. Both good and viable choices. Thanks for the input and comments.....kinda fun :-)

I too will second that my 2006 kx250 I had a few years ago never did feel right chassis wise. I just never felt comfortable in the corners, but the motor was awesome.

If you're trying to do something different, take an older bike that wasn't so "hot looking" like an early 2000's KTM or Yamaha and put a bunch of trick shit on it and try to make it look hot!

Now what's the fun in tearing apart a new bike :-)......I'm looking for the rusted pieces, seized bolts/axles, deteriorating air filter, etc....now that is the making of a good re-build Wink

I just now re-read your build thread on TT. I really want to see an over the top bad ass 125 like you did to your 250.

No doubt. I think those older KTM's are generally pretty ugly but you could definitely make one look titties like these!

I had an 03 KX250 two years ago. The engine in that thing was super nasty. I always thought my EFI Kaw 450 had nuts , which it did, but that KX was so strong off the bottom. I loved it. I also had a 2000 CR250 last year that was extremely fast but with a lot smoother power than the kx. This year I Picked up an 07 YZ250 , I havent been able to ride it yet due to Illinois sucking butt right now. Everybody I talk to says that the YZ motors are really strong to.I have an 05 KX 125 too, had millenium tech due the cyclinder last year that thing straight up screams and it feels like a bmx bike after riding a 450 to so thats always fun. Good Luck Moto120 Maybe see your CR build in Taylorville this year.

I know most US guys think that KTM's are crappy bikes but those early 2000 125cc KTM's have an amazing engine. More power than any any of the Japanese 125cc bikes. With SXS suspension those can be made great handling bikes. I had myself 2002 125SXS former GP team bike and that thing was crazy fast for a 125 .

Here's Brock Sellards really cool 2001 200SX

Carmichael PC replica, but with an AF and other modern day goodies. SFF fork, updated plastics, etc, etc.......
