I'm wanting to get a new 2 stroke to play around on and just have fun on. I'm trying to decide between getting a 300xc that comes with the electric start, a kick stand, and a bigger gas tank and just taking all that stuff off, or getting a 250sx. I rode a 300xc and i loved how broad the power was but i don't have access to ride a 250sx to be able to see if I like the power on that one more. The only differences between the bikes would be the primary transmission ratio, and of course the piston and bore size. They would weigh close to the same as well. Just wanna hear some positives and negatives of each bike and would love to know if anyone on here has ridden both, and what they like about each one.

I'd go with a 250Sx with 300SXS kit but I only moto, don't need/ want any of the extra stuff that will be detrimental on the track.

The XC has different transmission ratios too. You answered your question in the first sentence, if you just want an all around play bike, get the XC and dont bother taking the kick stand, tank and electric start off.

Another option is to split the difference and get a 250XC. I love mine. It's a great all-around bike. Quick revving for moto plus all of the offroad goodness. The last couple of years have a 6 speed tranny, so it can almost hang with a 300 in the open. The 300 still wins in the grunt and wide open desert departments.

And e-start is awesome. I figured I would remove it, but after a few rides I love it. If you plan to remove everything (tank, kickstand, e-start), it may be cheaper/easier to put a 300 kit on the SX.

I have a 250 sx and like the "hit" it has compared to my buddy's 300XC. 300 is a little more mellow hit wise but pulls stronger/feels stronger torque wise. Might vibrate a little more too. Hardly noticed a difference in trans ratios at the low speeds we ride. We trail ride mostly (tight single track) so I added a rekluse and xc tank (SX tank on e bay right now for $75.00). Can't go wrong with either one but for pure moto, go with 250.

Both fantastic bikes, the Black box and head are worlds apart, actually the entire bottom end is different too. Sx has a lighter crank and flywheel. I think you answered your own question, you said you liked the broad power of the 300, the sx 250 will be snappy, Build rpms much faster, spin the tire, shift fast to the next turn bike. The 300 you rode, so you know. For $950 you can get a 300sx bolt on kit from Ktm, that includes the black box and Sx Head. You'll probably need to spend some dough on the suspension if you plan on really motoing that 300xc. Plus what others have said.

My son has the xc model. It is a versatile and very rapid bike. He rides mostly trail these days and says it is easily the best all around bike he has owned.

I've had both, and they were both great bikes. For me, the 250sx was just a more fun bike to ride. I wouldn't even want the 300 kit. The 250 is just more free revving and lighter feeling.

What were you riding before? The 300 is the only bike I know of (other than a 500) that you can lug, or scream on. Short shift, lug, lift the front wheel with no problem, the 300 will do it all. That being said it isn't the most "exciting" bike out there. Its does almost everything well but doesn't "wow" in area specific area. I ride a 2012 300XC and I love it. Pretty much the perfect do it all bike. That being said the 250SX is a screaming machine that opens your eyes and makes you smile.

The 300 is very sweet....you will not go wrong with this girl as she loves to please......lots of low end and knows how to humm if she is called out. Sexy as all get outs and easy to toss around!! Want to slow down the pace - go for it as she will match you any day of the week. Woohoo Tongue Silly Evil Blush

X2

I took my 2000 YZ250, put on a bigger tank & kickstand, ESR 325 going on as we speak. If I could only add electric start I would!

get the 300XC and take the kick-stand off if you must (i take mine off for the track, otherwise she stays on).

leave the tank and electric starter on, you're really not going to notice the weight difference and you'll love the re-start ability.

take that bad bitch to the track or to the trails and you'll have an amazing bike to ride.

it's seriously the best all-around do it all bike there is.

enjoy, Bro

I have a 250sx and came off a yz250. The KTM is my favorite bike to this date but I find the power can be a chore to deal with when on a motocross track/trying to race with 4strokes. Stock, the midrange is gnarly and the motor signed off early for me. I changed the jetting pretty far from stock and put PC exhaust on it and it revs further now. It has a great power delivery but I have to be careful not to lift the front wheel out of every corner if I slide on the seat at all.
Haven't spent anytime on a 300 so I can't comment there.
