Dave is brutally honest in a way that you're NOT gona hear too often from Team Mgmt. He's Ubber-Defensive, at times, about his "rider". I dig that, too. I've witnessed him being brutally honest with his rider, also. So, this is who he really is...

If I was gonna give him ANY shit, at all, it would be about the Irony of his "entitled" comment.

And he and I WILL LAUGH about that...around 6-8 weeks from now.

About Truth, Opinion & Honesty...at this level:

You should appreciate it when you get it.

'Cause this is Raw at a level you NEVER GET IN PRO-SPORTS.

Ever.

People are relentless. I see fans every week asking for anything and everything from plastic to goggles to jerseys and more.

If you let one more person in, then the next person you deny thinks you're the bad guy. It could continue on for as long as you let it.

They have a schedule and stick to it, and there's nothing wrong with that. Same as any sport.

This is true but it looks bad to bring that up in an interview.

The real issue is that these are not fans. 95% of the people that go to the races are fans and are there for the racing, the racers, and the the show.

I have definately witnessed those idiots at the races that go way over the top harassing racers for their gear, jerseys, plastic, etc. I have seen people rush the autograph lines from all directions and scream out loud if they did not get an autograph. I have seen people stand face to face with a racer and berate them about why they aren't winning anymore. Add to that the decades of banner stealers that run on to the track during the race. How about the theft of equipment, (helmets, gear, bikes) from privateers and teams? Then there is the occasional the display which makes you wonder if we are going forward or backward (such as the racist idiots at the Southwick race).

It it a small percentage of people at the races that make up the list above. They are not fans because they don't have the basic respect required. They are either too selfish or just criminals.

Dave O, I don't blame you a bit for your comments. You don't owe those people anything.

Maybe this point has already been made,, but only so much pissing and moaning I can read through,
My son was/is as big of a fan boy with the NBA as any Moto head. We've stood in line for hours, fought our way to the front, been squeezed like cattle and have missed many opportunities for autographs, but we've gotten a some pretty sweet ones also. It's like a sport in itself and makes them that much more valuable to him. Like Dave says this entitlement gets old.

I remember Washougal '09 when Chad was on the zook, and after he won these two kids were hounding him for goggles. He didn't give them to him, and they both commented on "what a jerk" he was. Needless to say, I almost punched two young kids that day.
When Chad Reed was riding for Yamaha, Me and my then 6 yo son were at Perris riding the peewee track. CR22 was there testing goggles. My son said "Daddy, Is that Chad Reed over there?" I told him it was and gave him a sharpie to get Chad to sign his helmet.
My son was kind of shy and was standing about 50-60 feet away from their truck. Chad looked up from what he was doing with the goggle guy, jumped down from the back of the truck and walked over and signed my son's helmet. My son didn't even have to ask.

Chad Reed has always been a favorite since then.

Dave Osterman is a good fit with the Team 22 as he calls it how he sees it same as his Boss, most people don't like it and prefer their own dream world.
Years ago in Canberra at the junior Nationals Chad was there and my wife took our Baby girl up for a photo with him.
I looked over and laughed my head off as she pulled away and cried. We still laugh about it and she is Ten now.

Chad and Bubba are her 2 favourite riders both have that little extra going for them as they like her have beautiful natural tans. I would love to hear some of the crap they have had to put up with in their junior days, especially with both Fathers being such shrinking Violets.

Christ Chad wasn't even accepted by Ellie's parents at first as they reckoned he would make nothing of himself, he / both are inspirations to millions of people, I would love to see a film made of their lives.

Crush you must know the story of Chad and the broken bone in his leg when he was a junior, I was told but the guy was halfway through his 2nd carton.

Fans in all sports have gotten out of control with autographs. I know in Major League Baseball those guys can't walk out of their hotel room or leave the parking lot outside the stadium when men in book bags trying to get any little thing autographed. It ruins it for the kids that won't to see their hero

I don't think he is out of line at all

Well then....both you guys are idiots too. Dude was wanting an autograph after Chad wads his brains out........and can't understand why Chad may not be feeling like signing shit at that very moment. Like I said....I clump whinny / self entitled fans in a group.....which that group just added two more. Congrats.
Your mamma raised you wrong.

I still don't understand why people are so crazy about getting a fucking autograph! Who gives a shit! The last thing I would do at a race is go stand in line for a half hour to get a scribble from some dude. Go to the race, watch these incredible athletes, enjoy your day then go home.

I'm with Dave O on this one. There's a window of opportunity with everything. If you missed it, it's your fault. Don't blame someone gracious enough to give you one. Build a bridge, get over it and get yo shit together for the next one.

I was at A3 and Reed spent ages with the fans after the race. Getting pictures with them all and chatting to them. He also was kind enough to do an interview with myself and the rest of the waiting media.

He had no man friends dictating who could talk to him, just mingled with everyone for at least an hour after he came back to the pits. It was awesome to see and he was the fan favorite at both A3 and San Diego, people applauded as he left in the ambulance too.

I guess there will always be haters but in my experience Chad went out of his way to speak to fans an media really late at night and the fans were right behind him too.

All of this whining about meeting the riders and getting autographs is going to lead to one outcome...pretty soon you will be asked to pay for that privilege.

I enjoy live heavy metal music. You want to meet the band for 30 seconds, get an autographed poster, and get your picture taken? Buy a CD and get in line or pay significant extra cash and get in line.

Feld or the AMA could eliminate most of the friction that boils up like this between fans frustrated with the end of autograph signing and riders/team personnel by having a universal cutoff time and sending a 'referee' as a lightning rod through the pits to perform said cutting off.

"Sorry, Chad, rules say you have to stop now. Have a nice day, everybody. Buh-bye."

Fans can then blame the faceless AMA/Feld dude instead of dumping on the star.

Maybe the fans think they are entitled to stuff since the riders get the product from sponsors? It still doesn't explain being an asshat though.

Why even open the pits up to the public? I can see talking trash to other teams but talking about your fans that way doesn't seem very smart, no matter how true what you are speaking of is. Truth is, without those entitled fans you guys are nothing.

We wonder why some of the kid's today act the way they do, It's called lead by example.I've been going to High Point since
1983 and it's unreal what some fans will ask for from rider. The true fans of the sport will buy the products attend the races and ask for nothing in return except for seeing some unreal talent and racing. I've been taking my two son's 10 & 13 yrs to races since 2006 and I have always told them to respect all the riders from the Pro's to the Privateer's and not begg for anything just enjoy the day and be grateful for what you are getting to watch. I guess just getting to see CR22 upclose was not enough, He should have just taken his ball & went home.

Mostly what happens? Riders are forced to act like they can't hear people screaming at them.

Did this dude ever sit back and think, "maybe I should have got in line 15 minutes earlier..."
No sympathy for the tardy.

There is a sense of entitlement just because people buy a $50 ticket. I pay $200 to go see a Patriots NFL game and I don't even get access to the players, nevermind a chance for an autograph. People need to stop feeling like they're owed something by these riders. Why not just appreciate how close to the action we're able to get and how much we are able to see. I think Dave O is spot on he just maybe generalized it too much.
Easy to get autographs pregame from the visiting team. Guessing you could get Pats autographs at an away game. I myself have never been interested in autographs. Hannah always said he stayed until the last fan got an autograph. He was/is my favorite rider. Pitted a few spots from him at the Fla Winter AMA some years ago and never even thought to get an autograph.

The flat track guys (who make like no money) at least get to sell their t shirts before the races and the diehard fans buy a lot of them.
