Pretty amazing we finished second within a few points of winning the "biggest event" when you consider Tomac's Chadapolt and Barcia getting bammed in that first turn. The Dunge may have disappointed, but his consistancy was certainly needed and he delivered. Sure would have been nice to see him hang it out and make a few passes threw that second half of the race like we all expected, but one thing we've know about RD is it's a rare occasion he throws it away. He was tenative he wasn't comfortable on that track, a track that could put you on your head without warning. Most (sounds like Roger also) think one of Ryan's weakest links is his ability to move threw traffic. Most also know it's not the passes you don't make quickly that's the worse, it's the settling into the pass that's hard to bust out of.
Think about it, we lost by a few, he was there to support a team win, has issues (as Barcia and Tomac) with GP's slick hard pack but is also paid to chase down the fastest man on the planet next season along with dealing with Tomac moving up.
Very tough situation, there's a lot on his shoulders and altthough I was screaming at the screen yesterday I appreciate all of the effort.
Roger knows what Ryan needs to do to bring home one of those championships next year and I believe tough love is part of that strategy.

Yes, people you love can easily be replaced. Money on the otherhand is invaluable. or wait a minute...
Yes replace the people that love you trough thick and thin, because money is more importantDizzy

Tough love from Roger. I'm a Ryan fan but Roger said something no different than LB said about Shorty. "you're fast enough to win, you just need to believe it yourself and do it" When you have other riders riding the wheels off of the KTMs, and RD is pacing around at a top 10 finish, what do you expect Roger to say. "Oh poor Ryan, let's hold his hand and make him feel better"? In fairness to Ryan, I don't typically hear him making excuses, if he finishes poorly he says I need to work harder. A month from now Roger's comments will be long forgotten but hopefully Ryan will be re-engaged in winning. Let's not forget as the manager, Roger's job is not just to get them the best equipment but to mentally keep them focused, maybe Roger has tried to keep it behind the scenes with no success. You know, a different approach for a different result?

Each to their own. To be honest if I was on a team and was not doing something right or blaming my performance on something other than the problem I'd want people to be brutally honest with me. Don't sugar coat anything. Tell it like it is so the problem can be fixed faster.
Sure I agree, tell me, not the world..

I'm betting that anything Roger said publicly about Dungey, he hasn't already said to Dungey more than once. Maybe him saying it out loud will do something for Dungey. His racing this summer has been less than stellar. He needs something to get his butt moving. He's getting worse, not better. I think he will have a brutal 2014 season. I doubt he'll be top 3 in either SX or MX.
Really? He repeatedly beat everyone all summer long except for RV. I'm not so sure all the public ass chewinging's in the world are going to propel him past RV. I just think there is a place and time calling people out. I think as a team manager that that's counter productive. But hey what do I know? I'm just a keyboard warrior.

Congrats to Team Belguim either way.

I can't believe people are all butt-hurt over the fact that USA got 2nd place. It is really ridiculous to expect to win every single year. It's MOTOCROSS!!! Doo-doo happens!!!! It's an absolute miracle that USA has been as dominate as they've been. I mean, obviously, we are the best, but that still shouldn't equate to winning the des Nations as often as we have in this sport.

"Roger knows what Ryan needs to do to bring home one of those championships next year and I believe tough love is part of that strategy"

I think you are exactly right. Roger has been thru a lot with Ryan. I think Roger thinks Ryan can be even better. So do the rest of us, otherwise this wouldn't even be news.

And damn, the kid is an amazing rider already.
One of the best in the world. And he can be better.
Roger knows it.
WE know it.
Even his GF knows it.
Sometimes I don't think Ryan knows it tho, and that's the point.

Dime to a dollar says that Ryan has heard it many times before. Roger didn't say Ryan was a POS, Roger said Ryans limitations were in his head.

RD is a great rider, a great ambassador for the sport, and a good person from everything I read about him.

Here's to a great 2014, with RD even better!

We have to remember that RD is a Euro. To him, this is the most important race of the year. If his riders didn't do as well throughout the year and dominated this race he would be ecstatic. If they did excellent at all the races throughout the year and flopped this one, then his whole world has been disrupted and he will be completely let down.

For Dungey and the rest of team USA, I don't think this race is as important to them as it is to Roger. Their focus is the US races, not a one time Euro race. Unfortunately, it's obvious that Roger judges Dungey by this one race, and not his season as a whole.

That's a total bullshit statement. Believe me, Roger's only focus is to see that his riders win the Supercross and Motocross championships in their respective classes. For that to happen he has to make sure that everyone does their job. While he loves the MXoN, he knows that his employer does not pay him to ensure that the USA wins the MXoN. He proved your statement DEAD wrong back in 04, or whenever it was that Ricky came to Suzuki from Honda. Rogers sole focus was on getting Ricky seat time on the yellow bikes before the US series started and we didn't even send a team!

I remember it like it was yesterday, because NO ONE in this country, Roger included, gave two shits about the MXdN, including most of the US fans. Everyone drank the Koolaide and was buying into the OEMs line of bullshit about how the race had lost it's significance, no one had a budget for it, the riders didn't want to go because it wasn't in their contracts, etc. People who were historically the event's most ardent supporters were suddenly against US participation in the event and there was plenty of talk about us blowing it off permanently! I won't mention names, but they were the captains of the industry and they would tell you now that it wasn't like that, but it was!

Scott Kandel and I lobbied our asses off, trying to get the US to send a team, but Roger had his mind made up...he was staying here to work with Carmichael getting ready for 2005. We had John Dowd and Mike Brown ready to go and I was in on a conference call with Dowd and an AMA official and heard him get asked to be on the team...Brown too. Scott and I were trying to scare up a budget and it was so bad that at one point I had Travis Pastrana tell me that he would personally fund the team for 2004 to get them to Leirop.

In the end the whole thing fell apart and the US sent no one, which really sucked for the guys who were asked to go and then cut loose. Kandel and I went there and we were the only Americans there, except for Andy Bell, Knobby and a handful of others. We brought a few hundred "Warthog des Nations" custom t-shirts with the flag of each of the different countries on the front and gave them away to all the Euro riders and spectators! I think Ei Dave was there, too! Dave is a good man and he does a lot for this sport. I can think of another occasion where captains of our industry should have been, but when it came down to it there were only four or five of us "moto" people there...and Dave Kimmey was one of them.

Anyway, you are dead wrong about Roger's priorities, sorry I got sidetracked. LOL
I am amazed that many people don't remember or never knew about this. It seemed to be a discussion in the pits frequesntly ......If i'm not mistaken you spoke about it several times on MotoTalk back then.

The part about TP I think was undercover a bit more but it really shows where his heart was also.

The whole thing started just before Pontiac SX that year when RC announced the brand change I believe.

Anyway.....pretty hard to argue with DeCoster's success formula over the long term. Even harded to argue his take on the riders or equipment. Most of us have no idea what motivates Dungey or any other top level racer. Each responds differently to circumstances. Maybe it was time to call RD5 out on some things...........

Either way it is hard not to be an RD5 fan if only for the way he has conducted himself over the years.

If there was ever a race where Dungey's consistency is an outright advantage, it's the MXdN. The fact is that in the end the Dunge's two mediocre finishes served the points tally better than the throw away and then an almost win by Eli. But then if Dunge would have just made top 5 we also would have won.

But Dunge's KTM did not look well at times. Whether it's his setup or line choice I won't say.

Eli almost saved the day all by himself. He was one cross rut away from getting us the overall.

Barcia did well considering the unusual track (by American standards) and his bad luck in the first turn.

The Euros are fast. No more excuses. They are fast and they consistently ride tracks that are tougher than AMA tracks too.

That track was brutal and not in a good way. Rarely do I look at a track and have no interest in turning a wheel on it, but that track was just too sketchy. A place like that can really hurt people.

Well, I didn't know about any of that. I'm only drawing off DeCoster's comments about Dungey. Dungey had a tough season, as hard as he tried (and he tried) he couldn't match RV all season. His comments came across as very frustrated and let down with Dungey over this one race. Just sayin.

Well, Team USA lost. At the post race press conference,

Ryan Dungey said:

“To lose once again is tough. You haven’t seen the real me for a couple of years. We need to get that figured out. "

It would seem that the young man listened to The Man once again. And that right there my friends, is why he will be back, and stronger.

Smart kid.

There's nothing to be gained by Bullshitting an Athlete that's already Bulshitting himself. You are witnessing Roger being Hinest and trying to get a point across. Dungey's has the skills, has the bike, has the Team...and...is Paid to Win.

The first year Dungey went to KTM Roger Decoster went on record saying the bike wasn't good enough yet and it needed to improve. He's a brutally honest guy and speaks the truth. If he thinks Ryan's issues are in his head, he's right. I've heard him say when the bike isn't up to par. I've also heard him say when riders aren't up to par.

To me, I'd rather have a bullet to the head than a shotgun to the heart. The first step to correcting an issue is acknowledging reality.

in a way he trew him under the bus , at red bud to when the bike would nt start , said the bike stated back at the pits , (which i dont belive at all) kind of said it s ryan fault for stalling , sorry but imo he should not of put any blame on ryan that day , he should of blamed the bike , as the bike failed
the bike didnt fail, if anything the mechanics failed or there is a communication issue. i dont think the forks and shock valve themselves?

you dont believe the bike started back at the pits either? you obviously have never worked in the auto industry for a living. things like that happen ALL the time and are the hardest to diagnose. do you know how many times ive had to work on cars that have a "stalling" or "intermittent no start" condition and the car stays in the shop for a week and only fails 1 time?

welcome to the electronic age, this shit happens.

Ha! People seems to miss that little detail. We can spice this shit in AC being on lesser cc as well. This constant blame on the bike while others perform better on less, or the same material just stinks, and a spade should be called a spade.

Listen to Barcias interview was so refreshing, maybe a bit of track, but if any, RD should focus on himself rather than one of the biggest efforts in MX-history to fullfill his needs (EFI, new engine and frame just for him) didn't deliver. No excuses.

I wish to be among people that are honest, it's the only way to improve.

Honest - Roger said RD was unhappy with the KTM - Honest Truth

Roger said their was nothing wrong with the Bike - Honest Opinion ( Becuase how can he know the truth either way wrong or right ? )

What is Rogers Role ? Team Manager - Should he make RD happy with the bike or tell him he is talking nonsense that Ryan is the problem ? Which is more conducive to getting winning results ie "Improve" ?

Max Biaggi used to come in and say the bike is bad - They would pretend to work on the bike and send him out again with the same settings - He would come back and say "much better" . Now that would be a Lie ? Effective Phycology however.

RD has been coming 2nd all year long - Phycology ! So he comes second again and believes it is the bike - What is a Coach Team manager role ? To make his team believe they can win ! Roger did not do that plus his team has not won for a while - No surprise.

USA used to be the best but no longer

A team coach should have some phycological skills ? You can train a kid by saying what a pathetic worm he is and hope he has desire not to be a worm - Or you can train a kid by saying he is very talented and good job well done - Both could be considered honest Opinions as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Very basic Stuff.

Besides I am sure proffessional riders are under contract to not say the bikes are bad ? So what is the legal when your team manager tells the world that you said the bike is a POS ?

Like James Stewart on a YZ450 - He did not get along with it - But Davie Millsaps did - So who is correct ? Both JS was unhapy with the YZ450 got on the RMZ450 and won first off - Davie got on the RMZ450 and did even better. So what if there is nothing wrong with the bike - If you are unhappy on it you will not perform the same as if you are happy with it ?

If Ryan cannot find a happy setting then his team manager should help him find a happy setting !

Motogp you see all the time - " I found a setting" On the exact same bike not same model and it makes a huge difference to the lap time and results !

So who's Job is it then ? If it is Ryan Job then why did Roger go with ?

The first year Dungey went to KTM Roger Decoster went on record saying the bike wasn't good enough yet and it needed to improve. He's a brutally honest guy and speaks the truth. If he thinks Ryan's issues are in his head, he's right. I've heard him say when the bike isn't up to par. I've also heard him say when riders aren't up to par.

To me, I'd rather have a bullet to the head than a shotgun to the heart. The first step to correcting an issue is acknowledging reality.
I guess I don't understand what he wants Ryan to do? Dungey is burned out. Everyone can see that. He needs a break, and DeCoster brow beating him isn't helping anything. I guess I'm the only one who thinks this way.

Probably a whole lot of truth to what you said. Roger asked KTM to invest a lot of money and resources to bring the program up to championship level and then he brought in Ryan. No doubt that has put a ton of pressure on Ryan's shoulders. Now 2 years into it and things aren't going as well as either one of them have hoped. Just as in any sport or business, when things don't go as planned after investing so much, fingers start getting pointed and feelings hurt. Roger himself is probably under pressure from Austria due to the money and effort they are putting in. You also have to know that they are probably on the phone a lot trying to get new parts made to test to get Ryan comfortable which probably is starting to raise some eyebrows as well. It's got to be an interesting dynamic with the fact that KTM is ridiculously dominant in Europe yet over here it seems like people riding the same bike are struggling. It is obvious that Ryan is very passionate about what he does and give 200% but I think he is falling into the "the harder you try, the worse it gets" cycle and he needs to step back, remember why he loves riding so much and have fun. It's very apparent that this is now "a job" and when that happens the fire goes away. Maybe he needs to go ride Erzberg or do some sort of other riding this fall that is away from paychecks and expectations and re-charge the batteries a bit. Our sport needs Ryan to perform well and it isn't good for anyone when top riders get burned out. Same thing KDub went thru back in his Suzuki days.

KTM has a 450 title and numerous wins in 450 MX and SX. The 450F program is doing great.

If he were still at Zook, he would have the same pressure.
