Supermoto is still out there. Very few places have enough participants to run their own series, but the guys who like the pavement have been switching over quite a bit since they tend to crash much better than a sporkbike does.

I've seen guys huck a CRF down the track at 80 mph and then just pick it up and keep going. That really doesn't happen with the sportbikes. They're much more expensive to crash.

Supermoto is still alive and kicking , just .... where it went wrong in the USA is that they tried to turn it into tarmac Supercross, the first year of the AMA sereis , the tracks were cool and the dirt sections were technical without being stupid , i rode the AMA opener at Laguna Seca an nearly bagged a top10 against a rake of top pro's ,and got the chance to ride a Cycle News CRF450 which i was1 place off making the main on having never sat on it , the track was raceable , and the dirt didnt gift ex-supercross racers 3 seconds a lap , which meant that road race guys stood a chance , and ex MX guys with a decent level of skill could be competitive.. Ben Bostrom won the first AMA series , which had its final in Las Vegas , and the track was ok , even for a journeyman guy like me to be able to make passes on the likes of Ryan Hughes in the heat races... the tracks were cool and the euro guys lapped it up , then the following year all the tracks went crazy dirt sections that half the field couldnt do , and the job was screwed... i raced with Mcgrath and Ward in their first races and they wernt light years faster than everyone else , and it was worth coming for the experience, but watching the first race of the next year, it was obvious they didnt want guys that were heroes getting beat by guys that they had never heard of , and as a result , the momentum was lost , and that was that ... aside of the promotion issues ....

I was lucky that i got the chance to come when i did , ride a damn good bike , race bar to bar with the likes of Dymond and Scott Russell, and look respectable against guys i used to have on my workshop wall... and as SMR scott says, nobody rides a supermoto bike and comes back and says its rubbish, its so cool , the grip levels are unreal and nothing beats hitting stuff pinned in 3rd on full slicks on the dirt...

In the UK now ,the economy and lack of good promotion has done for it too, i now race in Germany on a great little dealer team ,on an ex Mauno Hermunen 450 husky (google him ) and have scored points in the International class there , where a former world champion didnt even get on the front row, its awesome fun , very competitive , and anyone who turns down the chance to ride a decent bike is missing out.

Its a shame its not still on the up , SMR scott did a great job supporting the sport in the US , at least the top US guys got to ride Mettet .. that is the biggest event in the world

I miss tricked out 50's. Lots of fun to just beat the shit out of those and other people who are riding them. My only thought about Supermoto is that Utah rider Cassidy Anderson (hope that's spelled close) was very good at it. He also passed me so fast at Jordan River that I was pretty sure he was a ghost of somekind. That and gnarly X Games wrecks.

They held one in Sturgis SD September 14 and 15. Attendance was okay they said. The business community liked it and maybe it will come back next year. It got decent press coverage too.

Thank god we still have Mettet....would trade it for Namur any day of the week tho. But Mettet is always an awesome event to be at.

Supermoto is the same as MX basically, in the way that you need to see or, even better, experience it live. If the sound of them thumpers going into the limiter followed by a squeeking slide does not put the hair in your neck right up then motorcycles are not your needed daily fix. And the sliding is just fucking addictive, i even do it on my big ktm950 adventure now, i just can't stop attacking a corner breaking hard, pushing 2 gears down and feel the rear slide out on ya....then wheelie out of the corner. It put's a freaking big grin on my face every, freaking, time. It never get's old! Ppl that say Supermoto is rubbish just never ride out of their comfortzone. The limit of those thumpers is just surreal on those slicks, the fun even surpasses it.

There is still Amateur supermoto out there, and in the NJ, Pa, MD areas a big focus on young riders. I will be in Millville NJ for supermoto on Oct 19th and I am hoping my son finally decides to give it a try. Every time I ask he states he is happy on the dirt and wants to stay on a Motocross track or riding in the woods like we normally do. (he is 11).

I am not against giving him another avenue to ride, just like I am looking forward to trying supermoto for the first time.

I love the concept of bringing this type of racing to the cities, which is how it was originally founded, but as was pointed out earlier, there was not good management for future growth in the pro areas.
