its killing motocross. no one will admit it.

once a kid finishes his 85cc bikes....they disappear. no father wants to have a stable full of valve eaters....nor can they afford to. now you just see the really fast kids who attract sponsors continue on in the system.

tellin ya right now. if you brought a 125cc class to the nationals as a pre-pro trainer class it will have full gates busting at the seams....and it will revive the local tracks again with kids burning laps on 2 stroke 125s.

missed my point.

4 strokes are great. but technically an 85cc rider that hasn't got the size is tossed onto a big fat 250f at 15 usually. today's motocross is missing a bridge to the big bikes which used to be a 125 (125jr).

bike is light, cheap to maintain and keeps the family at the racing gig for much longer. nowadays they jump the 250f, get their asses handed to them, then when the bike grenades that is usually the nail in the coffin for them.

your delusional if you think a 250f is dependable and cheap to maintain....c'mon. half the privateers on pro tour refuse to run 250's due to high cost of motor maintenance and durability of the bike.
First off I never said cheap.your missing my point.your point of a rider not being able to bridge the gap from an 85 to the next level is proved wrong all the time.its not a valid point.your paying a lot of money to race moto wether it be a 2 or 4 stroke

We should have the right to choose 2 or 4 stroke with our wallet's, not be forced into it by manufacturers or governing bodies who so blatantly slewed the rules, displacement capacities etc in favour of four strokes!
Kudos to KTM and Yamaha for at least giving us the choice!

my point is very valid about costs. not everyone is going to the races in a million $$ fun mover. the weekend warrior who camps at the track and packs a 2stroke because its affordable.

If you lose the inexpensive racing side of it where its only big money to race and you will be racing by yourself.

What's hurt motocross as much as anything is the high cost of racing excluding bikes. Gas to get to a track is higher, entry fees and gate fees are higher, trucks and vans are higher. A lot of people are still riding, but they are doing it on practice days where they can ride all they want for $25 or $30 dollars and get more bang for their buck and not an eight minute moto and wait four hours before the next one. I got to ride REM last summer and I have to say they give you your moneys worth, long motos and a rough track that was fun to ride. I just wish I wasn't a 28 hour drive away!

This. Gas is a fortune, and it is very difficult to justify the cost of going to a race where you sit around all day for your 4 lap motos. 200.00 easy for me to go to a race for a day where, if I race 2 classes, I will be on the track for a 1/2 hour total.

As for the rest of this argument, the class structure has to change at the races so viable 2 stroke classes are offered, so people might be enticed to race them again. I currently have a 2008 Yamaha 250F with a 269 kit in it and it is almost the perfect bike-easy to ride, not too much power. Then I picked up a sweet 2008 Yamaha 250 2 smoker, and the thing is a rocket. I haven't ridden a 2 stroke since my 2005 Yamaha 250, and it is faster and more violent than I remember. It is a thrill ride for sure and I am still in the midst of trying to remember how to ride a 2 stroke effectively. With a bit more time, I will probably go it alone with the 2 stroke, just b/c it is idiot proof, has tons of jam, and is more fun to ride. I am looking at picking up a Yamaha 125 for the fun of it somewhere down the road.

I'm 50 now, so my feelings have obviously changed with my age and current ability, but my perfect race day would be a 125 class with all of my peers banging through gears without the fear of grabbing too much throttle and killing myself. 450's are incredible bikes, I have had several, but I won't ride them anymore b/c they trick me into thinking I am a better ride than I really am, and I believe that things in motion tend to stay in motion...they are too big, too heavy, too fast, and too much for the vast majority of us ham and eggers. A 450 is a long way from the 1975 TM 100 I started racing in the big wheel schoolboy class.

I used to think his two stroke rants were like that one guy who was always posting that four stroke MX bikes needed to be quieter but now with the passing of time I can see Joe Newmann was just way ahead of the curve. Took me quite a bit longer to hop on the two stroke train but honest to God I now realize two strokes are superior to four strokes in almost every area...cost, easy to work on, so much lighter, etc. For the record I do realize four strokes are easier to ride, way more tractable, blah blah blah but honestly their advantages IMHO simply don't outweigh their disadvantages.

When will the OEMs (Honda will NEVER offer them though) start phasing out their over priced over weight pigs and give the consumer what they want? In any event I am looking forward to the 300cc glass next year in Europe.

You really can't find what you want on that list? Everyone is different and your recent epiphany doesn't make the two stroke superior for everyone. You prefer two strokes, okay. Go buy one and ride it. No need to be so dramatic.

This argument comes up in every one of these threads, and I just don't get why people choose to ignore the schoolboy class. If I had a rider coming off mini's and he was too small or not skilled enough to handle a 250f, I would buy him a 125 and race the schoolboy class until I was comfortable with his abilities. Is that so hard?

Parents elect to put their kids on 250f's from 85's, it's not mandated.

Maybe we should do a poll and ask people how long it's been since they bought a new bike.

All I have to say is I'm in my late 40's, I still track ride over 30 times per year, and love this sport.
I own two 250's, (not 250f's) and if it wasn't for my 2 stroke knowledge, and doing 95% of the maintenance myself, I wouldn't be riding moto anymore.
For me thats it in a nutshell.

Guyb, I own two Kawasaki 250's, and would love to buy a brand new one.
If the powers at Kawi would build that bike that I want to buy, then they have my money tomorrow.
As it stands right now, they choose not to go after me as a consumer, it sucks really, but thats the way it is.
P.S. I'm always scanning for another barely used 06' or 07' Kx 250, (because I'm Kawi loyal) so I've got money to spend, wish It could be spent on a new 2013 or 2014 KX 250.

i don't have a dog in this fight since i don't race motocross anymore.

however, i sold my 450 and bought a 300 and enjoy riding both trail and moto more than i have in the last 8 years.

not sure if it's just me getting older and enjoying things more, or because i got to a point where trying to crack open the throttle on the 450 just wasn't fun anymore.

either way, i'll never buy another 4-stroke. been there, done that, next.

How would you classify shrinking rider counts at local tracks across the USA? A testament to the awesomeness of four strokes or an indication we've made an already expensive sport even more expensive to the point fewer and fewer can afford to race?

I can't even imagine how many blown up 250Fs are languishing in garages due to dads/racers not having the coin to revive them.
There was a recession....that's what I attest the shrinking rider count to.

There will NEVER be a return to 2-strokes by the Japanese OEM's. I can guarantee that.

Too many 2 strokes threads this morning........posted this in the other thread.

On the 2 stroke thing.......I look at it like this. Look at where the argument stood only 5yrs ago.....2 stroke guys didn't have much ground to stand on. " Now days ".......I think it's a different story. In just the 3 short years I have been back riding I have been seeing more and more 2 strokes show back up at the track.

It started out being an underground movement .....which has turned into a full blown rebellion that seems to be gaining some serious momentum. I didn't think I'd ever switch back to getting another 2 stroke.....but damn it man.....it is just too much fun riding those damn things.

You don't have valves
You don't need / want a $1200.00 Exhaust system
You can't beat the sound
You don't have valves
you can't beat the cost of the parts vs a 4 stroke
You don't have valves
you need "less" parts for a 2 stroke
You can work on the damn thing yourself
They are lighter and easier to throw around
And not sure if I mentioned this.....But they DON'T have valves!

And on a side note : Look at the 13' and 14' KTM 250 SX......the 450's really aint got much on this bike. I've seen them first hand of what they are capable of....and they friggin' rip! This is a stock 250 2 stroke design. What would the 125cc and 250cc 2 strokes be like today.....if the Jap bikes actually continued progressing that design???

I love the 4 strokes......but damn man , the 2 strokes aint no joke.

I backed out of the whole 2/4 debate a while ago when I realized the same people complaining about 4 strokes also seem to be at the forefront complaining about everything else associated with modern motocross. The bikes are too loud, the gear is too busy, tracks are too hard, the rules aren't fair, the TV coverage sucks, MX Sports sucks, the AMA sucks, all Japanese manufacturers suck, Honda sucks more than the others, the pro purse sucks, pro racing sucks, amateur racing sucks, [fill in the rider name] is no Bob Hannah, getting laid by a beautiful woman sucks, I remember when gas was 10 cents, and for pete's sake YOU KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN! It's a futile debate. If the dealerships were stocked full of brand new 2 strokes in every configuration from 50cc to 500cc in 10cc increments, I'm convinced these people would still find something to bitch about.

Blew the top end on my 125 a few months ago. 300 bucks for parts labor and the whole ball of wax. Had some pretty significant damage to the head and cyl mating surfaces.

I'll keep the smoker based on cost alone.

And for guys asking why smokers get so pissed about 4 strokes?

AMA Displacement rules. It is horse shit and everyone knows it.

Good luck to this poor sap..Can't imagine what this ran him..

I agree, it is odd how hostile the four stroke crowd gets defending their choice to ride a heavier, more complicated/parts intensive, and more expensive bike. Just ride what you want....Wink

My nephew had the exact same thing happen to his 2012 KX450F....but over a double jump at Pala! Bike blew up a year and a half ago...still it sits the garage broken.

Meanwhile, he is having a blast riding my '95 KX250!
