MXA says the 09-12 CRF 450 is a dog and wasnt as good of a bike as the 08. They say the 13 is a better bike than 09-12 but Chad doesnt seem to be a fan. Is the 08 the best Honda 450? I just want honest opinions from people who have ridden all three generations? My last Honda was an 04 and I thought it was a great bike.

I've ridden all three, with very limited time on the '13.

Yes the '08 is awesome. I'd say the chassis and power is better suited to the faster-than-intermediate crowd who weigh over 175 lbs. That engine has a lot of power, and it hits good. I actually installed a 450X head (smaller intake valves) on the '08 and it made the motor very smooth.

I have a '10 that I've been riding for a while. It has all the suggested mods. The best way to describe it is 'neutral'. It's so balanced and so easy to ride that it can actually get boring- it just does everything right. I think an A rider would want it to have more 'personality', if you will.

The '13 seems similar to the modified '10-'12, but perhaps with more potential with the chassis. The one I rode had some chassis mods, and it handled amazing- the front end would go where you want it to and the bike cornered better than my '10. The engine on the '13 is very similar to the '12, but has a slightly higher compression piston.

Hope that helps.

Bike test and opinions are the biggest mystery on earth. Discovery should do a piece on it, I really doubt the average rider would notice any major difference, and if so, if that difference really makes a difference for them in lap times or endurance that any tweaking for a few hundres couldn't fix. But my opinion is just another stupid opinion...

From all the guys I know yes the 08 Honda was a goodie, no doubt about it, the 10-12 ones were ok and most riders would not notice the flaws that it had but magazines (for example) have to find flaws (MXA is especially harder on Honda these days it seems).

From all accounts the 13 is the best of the lot, it gets lambasted about its twin pipes but it can fly. Yes you might have to spend more getitng it to run faster but lets face it only pros need a faster or better suspended bike and they are going to do that to their bike no matter what brand it is.

I've owned an raced an '08, '09, and have ridden a '13 a few times. Compared to both new bikes the '08 is a hog and unresponsive, the weight difference is painfully noticeable. I can't get the '08 to turn for the life of me when going back to it also. The '09-12 is very nervous, it will dart and deflect until you get it dialed. But after a little balancing and springs I have no handling complaints at all. The '09 has the least choked down motor of that model range, from '10-'12 the bikes are REALLY strangled stock.

The '13 is a different animal. The balance is better stock, but the power is still painfully mellow. Handling feels roughly the same as my updated '09, so it's a better starting point stock. The air forks make zero difference to me. But for me personally, it will cost less to buy a used older model and retrofit it than to buy a brand new bike. All my bikes have been absolutely bullet proof, my '09 has over 200 hours and is still totally solid.

The 13 is a great bike. I wasn't a fan of 09-12. I rode red until 09 and switched to suzuki. Probably going to buy a 13 crf450 at the end of the season.

Rode an '08, sure they made good power and handled ok. BUT, they are heavy, overweight pigs just like all the rest of the 450's. The pro's are not racing 240 lb to 245 lb bikes like we are..... That is why I chose a '09 CR450. They are virtually identical 09 to 12 and my understanding is the 13 is no better, maybe worse. And they are way lighter than the rest, along with real slow stock....

Here are a few must haves worth every penny: Yoshimura full exhaust--instantly wakes the bike up, if you want stronger upper mid to top throw a hot cam stage 2 cam at it, rear suspension link from pro-circuit or other reputable company, 1 tooth larger rear sprocket.

Oh, did I mention its 10 lbs lighter than my KX450? They weight savings is noticeable every time I ride.....

Factory bikes that Chad Reed rides are very, very different than production units.

Carry on.

My '09 felt better(smaller&lighter), but my '08 handles better. Both were dog shit slow stock and needed a pipe, porting and a piston to feel like a stock Kawasaki. Like good 250f slow.

I went from a 09 RMZ 450, the bike was awesome. Handled well, you do not notice the weight at all when riding it, and motor was good. To a 12 CRF450. I HATED it at first. Front end was harsh, and it wallowed in corners. The motor was weaker, and the only thing i really actually liked was the weight of the bike being very light. I put on a full Yosh, new sprocket(1 tooth up), hydraulic clutch(AWESOME), and go the suspension finally the way i want it. Now, i love the bike. It handles well, it is neutral through corners and breaking bumps, the motor woke up with the exhaust and sprocket. The only other thing i want really to help the motor is a Moto Tassinari air boot. Other than that, speaking with friends with the 13. Some say its ok, that the forks are hard to work with and hard to get correct. Others hop on it and say they absolutely love it, and that the forks are awesome. I have zero desire to go and get one at the moment. Just my .2

There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to compare a works bike to a production unit.

I thought that the 450 08 felt like a tank. Just like the early kawis did. The 450 09 on the other hand felt nothing like it, sure it was slow and it had a few fixes that needed to be done to it. But I really liked mine, and the bike was bullet proof. Never had a mechanical failure and the F.I was working perfect.
My advice for you mister is:
Test them both before you decide where you should put your money.

I started riding mx in my late 30's on a '07. Liked the bike but I couldn't get it to turn in the corners very well. Then bought a '09 after testing one back to back with my '07. The '09 felt much lighter and for me turned much better. Now I am on a '13 and like it better but it's not wildly different from my modded '09. Feels a little lighter in the air, turns a little better in the corners yet needs something for the motor as its flat up top. Ergonomics on the '09 and the '13 for me have been great. Really like how slim the '13 is. Reliability on all have been excellent.

I have owned all 3 and can honestly say I went faster on my stock '13 than my fully modded '09 with motor work, FC suspension, Merge linkage, etc, etc.
The motor is flat up top due to it being the quietest 450Mx bike in the big 5, but this can be addressed somewhat with a remap, and for sure with a pipe. I have a stock pipe mod and map that lets out all the horses the pipe and stock mapping stifle.
Bottom line is, you don't need to buy a pipe for this beast.

The 08 weighs less than the 09...

Anyway I've rode an 08 and a 12 and would have to say I like the 12 in the corners more, but would prefer the 08 everywhere else. The 08 definitely feels more comfortable in the air.

I guess if I was looking for a Honda 450 I wouldn't be too picky on the year because if you enjoy riding you will enjoy the bike no matter what the year. Just look for one that is a good deal and buy it.

I'm very tall and the 08 has much better ergos for someone my size. When Honda pulled the steering stem back 17mm in '09, they made the bike better for someone under 6' tall, and made the rider cockpit cramped for the taller guys.

You might wanna double check. No mag or rider would agree with that first statement.

I read as many reviews as I could when I was looking for a newer bike a couple of years ago. I didn't know it I wanted an 08 or 09. Everything I read put the dry weight of the 08 2 lbs lighter than that of the 09. So don't worry I double and triple checked that statement.

I raced my brothers '12 in the summer of 2011, and also raced an '05 depending on if Kyle showed up or not.
Other then suspension that was setup 30lbs to heavy for me on both bikes, I liked the '12 better. I'm a little guy, 5'9" and 150-155 in my gear. The older bike hit a little too hard for my liking and took some serious throttle control in order to keep the front end down. Both seemed to turn very well but the 05 felt heavier and kept me from charging into corners as hard.

everyone i've talked to with a '12 or '13 loves them.

08 Honda was the best Honda made. Still like that bike better then anything iv riddin, it hit ruts perfect and felt stable and the front end felt safe everywhere. The 09 was really hard to ride because of the front end diving and the pegs digging into ruts everywhere.

I've owned an '03, '04, '05, '06, '07, '08, '09, '11, '12 & '13. My favorites, in the years that I owned them, were the '07 & '08. I struggled with the '09 but by the '12 Honda had that gen pretty dialed (IMHO). I absolutely love my '13. For calibration purposes, I'm a 5'9" 170 # mid-pack Vet Intermediate but my brother is a fast Vet Master and he's pretty happy with his as well. Suspension for me is just clickers and air (33#) but my similarly sized but much faster brother has had Factory Connection valve his forks and shock and he says it's an improvement. Just my $02 - hope this helps.

Curb weight is with gas, and the 08 had a half gallon bigger tank.

I got to ride an 05, a 13 but hated the clutch and I have ridden an 09 that had a full PC motor and A kit suspension. I dont know how the 05 compares to the 08? The 09 was too much bike for me with tbe PC motor and I have a 13 KX450 now. I wanted something smaller and lighter than the KX since I am 5'7 and weigh 155 pounds so I ordered a 14 CRF450. Thanks for eeveryones input.

I dunno, Jeff. That's the very same bike ('08) you stuffed Right Into The Ground...right in-front of me at Glen Helen! I remember you picking it up and looking at me w/ a "What the Heck!?" expression on your face (Low-Side in the Sand-Pit corner...if you remember?).

But, yes, that was a good bike for you.

Funny, but, you look like you ride the current Zooks just like you rode that bike...?

They changed the cam and a few other little things to mellow them out. Big difference, '05-'07 fast and '08-'12 turds. I haven't ridden the '13

The '05-'08s are amazing bikes. Solid, good suspension, powerful, reliable. Learn to check valves and you will have a long happy life with them. Great machines to this day.

The '09-12s are quirky. Stock, they are slower than the old ones, the cure for this is $$$. The suspension components are good, but out of balance. The bike needs a lot of sag and stiff fork springs. The appeal of this generation is that it is the lightest 450 ever made and is relatively reliable.

The '13 made some small power gains with its higher comp piston and new mapping, then Honda threw that down the shitter by bolting on second muffler that adds about 7 pounds of tonnage to the bike. The chassis balance is better. The air forks have an odd progressive feel, and if the unreliable seals fail, your day (and more) of riding is done.

Going from the 250 class onto a 450, my '12 Honda 450 is my first which I got last year, and I really love it because of how easy it is to ride and throw around. The motor is weak compared to the other bikes, but I'd rather have a comfortable, slower bike than a stronger one I don't feel comfortable riding. The previous model Kawasaki I never felt comfortable on, but I hear the new one is really good (except my dad has had some trouble with the new forks.)

Anyway, I feel that all the big 5 have such good bikes having done 450s for so many years that if you buy newer than '10, pick a color/the one your local dealer has.
