The manual states to use a puller to separate the two case halves. I'm wondering if the tool is absolutely necessary? My non of my cr' s or crf' s have ever required the recommended case splitter. This is my first rm rebuild. Can I separate them with a rubber hammer and pry bars like I do on my Hondas?

Thanks,

Gerald

RTFM and FTFM. Why chance a problem, I use a steering wheel puller from Harbor Freight, less than $20

Heck try a little C-4 if you don't care about taking the chance of ruining the cases. Rule 1 always use the proper tool for the job easier and cheaper in the long run.

Just bear in mind, that if you buy anything from Harbor Freight that has moving parts, you'll only be using it one time.

If you're gonna be working on your own bike, then INVEST IN THE TOOLS. Unless you feel like permatexing your cases from where you left pry marks because you thought a flat head would be a suitable substitute for case splitters. Now, if you want to "invent" your own tool, be my guest. Check out a legitimate case splitter and let your imagination run wild.

Seriously though, for the love of your bike (being a HIGHLY sought after 250 2 smoke), just pay the $54.99 for the tusk splitter.

I like to remove all the case bolts, turn my nitrogen tank up to 300psi and blast that bad boy apart through the crankcase breather line.

I don't have a wood chisel, and I don't feel like buying a proper wood chisel, so I was wondering if I could just use the ass end of a claw hammer.

Well Gerald, as you can see, you have kicked a hornets nest, so there is no need to post one of my usual smart ass comments. However, I cannot say I wasn't tempted. Large. Fortunately, my mechanically inclined comrades have given you plenty of good advice. Evil
I use a 3 jaw puller, but bought longer bolts to make it work. It works because it lines up perfectly with the holes in the cases on my Hondas. I can't say that will be the case on your Zook. Maybe just get it ready to split then take it to the dealer and have them do it. Properly. When you pay that bill, then you might realise your money would've been better spent on buying the right tool. At least your cases won't be fucked up, though. Always an upside to everything. Wink

gharmon, I'm very curious about your method of using a rubber hammer and prybars. Please explain it in detail. I don't understand. I've split lots of cases on many different bikes, and the one place I never touch with anything more than a rag to clean them, is the mating surfaces of the cases. I bought a case splitter and a crank removal tool from Rocky Mountain a while back for a little more than $100, and a flywheel tool for $12. They have all worked great over the years, and make the job a lot easier. That would be my suggestion. But really, explain the hammer and pry bar method. I've never heard of anyone doing it that way. And JCollins762 is right. That bike is at the top of the most wanted list.

Okay I deserved all of this ass chewing I got. Like scooter mentioned I usually use the old generic harmonic balancer puller to pull my cr cases apart. It fits good. However it doesn't work on the zook. The bolts holes you use are to spread apart, this is not the case on cr' s.

I pulled the pry bar phrase from an atv site when I googled it and brought up a ltr 400 site.

Excuse me for being stupid.

I was hoping there was a car type puller that was available locally I could use and someone brought up the steering wheel puller.
I should not have posted what I did. Don't worry guys. I don't plan on ruining a good smoker.

It was good entertainment for the day. Tongue

FYI, Honda cases usually come apart the easiest.

U could make a puller. Measure your bolt centers, get the appropriate sized pc of round steel plate. Big hole in the middle, to fit over the crank. Drill holes in the plate to fit the case holes. Weld a pipe in the middle that is centered on the crank. Weld a nut in the pipe same thread as the bolt for your puller. Thread your bolt up from the inside so you can use the tip on your crank and Voila. Bobs your uncle. Just a thought.

I just split the cases on my 07 RM450. What a cocksucker. Absolutely a war getting them apart, don't know if it was because of the Seizeco crank or what. To top it off, when I pressed the crank out it took the bearing with it and snapped the lock tabs off. Grrrrrr

Chinese junk. Bought this bike blown up, motor had approx an hour and a half on a complete rebuild. Crank big end locked up solid, smoking the brand new Athena big bore kit in the process. Awesome. Called Seizeco and they basically said "Sucks to be you, thanks for shopping Seizeco."

I've split YZ250 cases with a harmonic balancer puller before. Cost like $12 from Vato Zone and got the job done.

n hindsight a splitting wedge and maul would've been easier.....

I don't understand why you guys just don't buy the proper tools. They're not expensive, last forever, make the job so much easier without causing damage, and it's not like you're only going to use them once. A case splitter from Rocky Mountain is $60, and a crank tool is $60. They will work on any case and any cranks, 2 or 4 stroke. If you ride bikes, you're going to need them as long as you keep riding bikes.

You can add to that some paint stripper or gasket remover to loosen up the old gaskets. Nothing says hack like a set of cases that some savage scraped or chiseled off the old gaskets. I use this..

I would be interested to hear more about the C-4 method that X was referring to.

And you are so right. He's my problem, I'm a cheap ass by nature. It's in my DNA. My dad and mom are cheap asses and I guess I'm a piece of that block. Anyways, I always plan on buying one but never do and then some shit breaks and I put off doing in until someone says hey lets go ride this weekend ( and it will be like thursday). Here I am with two days to make it happen no tools. So I usually improvise and make it happen either by some car tool I made work or making a tool like Scooter said. That's why it takes 2 days to get it together vs the half day that is should.

I usually always get it done though. Even if i have to ride with no sleep since I been up for two days. I"m like a junkie I guess. I know I have a problem (cheap fucker, procrastinator) but I still do nothing to fix it. At least I admit I have a problem. I been saying I was gonna stop this way of doing shit for years. Im 42 now so who the fuck knows. lol
