I've seen a few mentions of "big things" coming from Yamaha for 2014. More than likely it'll be a brand new 450 plus EFI on the 250F (or so I think) But let's say it is an updated YZ250 in some form or another like a few have speculated - pretty much anything beyond BNG will be "updated" - what do you think the price point will be and what do you think it should be?

Considering the steady increase in price on the 2006+ models, I'm sure it'll be getting close to 8k, and depending on how new and improved it is, that could be reasonable (in relative terms to the price of a new 450).

I think something closer to 7k even would be a speedy fast seller. Some suspension and geo tweaks they've learned over the years since 2006 in a new frame, possibly, and wham. Maybe even shock the world and throw some direct injection technology on there and watch as orders back up to 2015 and beyond.

I dunno, 3 1/2 more days until the next Supercross race.....

Here's a better thought....why would you even buy one? Yamaha has neglected the YZ line for 7 years now, but they continue to sell the bike and increase the price every year. If that's not a b!tch slap in the face to customers I don't know what is.

Buy a KTM, TM, or Husky. At least they develop and improve their models every year.

IMO, even if Yamaha launched a new model YZ250, they would still have a hard time matching the KTM 250 SX.

Husky?
At least they made improvements? lol
They made a crappy bike, not as crappy...
Ill take my YZ 450...

my opinion is that if it's going to be used locally for 250 races, then it needs to be priced competitively with the 250f models.

there is zero reason to put it in the 450 price-range.

also, i would love to see it happen but really doubt it. i have lost all faith in the Japanese mfrs ever producing bikes for the general public to the same extent as KTM

Dudes... I already said I don't think they will. Others have suspected a 2014 YZ. I just asked what you think the price point WOULD be, and what you think it SHOULD be. That's all, just simple moto talk for a Tuesday afternoon.

As far as buying a KTM or TM or Husky, I just posted in the 2014 CR250 thread that I think it has to do with years of reputation. I'm plenty stoked on new 2-stroke bikes from any mfg, but I grew up drooling over 96 CR250s and 2000 KX250s and 2006 YZ250s and whatever else. I own a 2004 CR right now, despite it not being the best 250 ever made, just because they're fun and durable and have that Honda-ness that comes with a red front fender. That type of stuff goes along way (sometimes further than actual technology or the product itself) in marketing.

Economies of scale dude.

KTM, TM, and Husky are niche brands (KTM is the arguable exception nowadays) and started out knowing that volume would be low and they have remained low. They are set up to operate this way, therefore no real sweat off their back when the 4 strokes took over.

In Yamaha's case, they are running exclusive production lines for the YZ's. The more you make the less it costs.
For every 1 YZ they don't sell in a given year, the cost to Yamaha goes up. Consider how many YZ sales they lose to their 4 stroke line and the other brands for that matter and there's your answer.

As far as them not developing the bike, well compared to the other brands you listed Yamaha has a many more and many bigger fish to fry. If people would feed the Fish, maybe they would fry it...

Just my 2 cents but who am I...

I think they should sell the new YZ250's every year at $4995 OTD. Skip the BNG and improvements, people set them up like they want regardless. Bone stock, it's a great bike. Why change it? I'd bet they would sell a bunch of bikes if they just kept it alive and sold it at that price.

I really don't disagree with that at all, but I think 4995 OTD would never happen, no matter how "out of date" the bike is. When was the last time a motocross bike was 4995? You make a good point tho, drop the price of a solid foundation and let people customize them from there. That's kind of the essence of all MX dirtbikes anyway?

My very first dirtbike, a brand new 2001 Honda CR125, was $4250 out the door. Hard to believe in today's world!

the missing logic in this scenario is that, yes their sales are lost to the "F" models, but if they updated their 2 stroke people might go back to them in which case the production #s would actually be higher. You have to believe that if they are still able to sell a 6 year old bike, that an updated version would up the sales #s.
Now we have 4 cents,

Hmm. Cool, what am I looking at? It's either a) a Yamaha cylinder or some special machined cylinder by some machinist genius or b) Kate Upton's tits.

IDK seems the KTM 250SX is always sold out and Yamaha YZ250's are over priced for what there offering, the Husky still has the final drive on the right (wrong) side. TM seems the only real option this late in the season. Does Gas Gas make a motocrosser? What ever happened to the new Maico?

This would work
Don't agree? Don't give a shit
It's a $5,000 bike
I have one
A 2011 yz250
I love it
But it's still a $5000 bike

The "new" Maico is about to be released after solving various legal hangups pertaining to rights to the name etc. That's the story anyway.

I get what you are saying but unfortunately (or fortunately) it is still a great bike, even being so dated currently. Hell, how new is the 250f every year, not the greatest value either if you are looking for huge improvements...
suspension? similar to yz 2stroke
motor? old as sin

I still can't wait to try my buddies '13 250sx but several fast guys I talk to still choose yz250s over 250sx, must be a reason...

why do people buy them? because they are good bikes! if you dont like the price of a brand new 2013 then go find a brand new 2010/2011 its the exact same bike 2000$-3000$ cheaper.

I'm super pumped that I bought an 01 yz 250 for 1300 with a fresh top end that is more than fast enough for my beginner class style and doesn't bottom out when I case jumps because I tweeked the suspension a little bit. I sometimes regret not getting a 125 but I'm glad my dad thought me the value of saving a couple thousand dollars by getting a bike that is a little bit older and not any slower.

Haha. My first real bike was an XR 75 in 1973 and my mom and dad paid around $375 for it. I cant remember all the bike in between but I do remember when they got me a YZ 125 and it was around $1200 around 1980 and an IT 175 they got for $1400.
Now I pay about 6 times that for my sons 450s.Shocked

Yamaha will upgrade it or drop it. I don't think 2014 is going to be the year any of that happens though. They have their hands full with the new 450 and 250F. I'd say the 2-strokes a couple years away.

While we're in fantasyland, I think gas stations should give gas away for free.

I don't think that's going to happen, either. Smile

It's hard to logic through bike prices - any bike out there is worth what people will pay for it. Sure, a YZ250 is the same bike in 2013 at $7500 as the one they sold in '08 for $6800. But if that's the bike you like, it's the one to buy. As far as comparisons to KTMs go, the YZ has better suspension and the KTM has a better motor. In my opinion, it costs similar money to pump up the motor as the cost to pump up the suspension, so that's kind of a wash to me. My son has a '012 YZ250 with an Eric Gorr 295 kit and he loves the bike. We were at a shop last weekend and they had a Dungey Replica KTM, and we offered to buy it for him if he wanted it, and he said no, I like my YZ more. So is a $7500 YZ250 worth more than a $10,000 Dungey Replica? No, not to everyone. Someone else walked into the dealer and bought the Dungey bike that same day - and they had a new YZ250 on the floor.

There are no bad bikes out there, and on the other hand all the bikes cost too much.

My first brand new bike, a 1984 KX 125, was $1500 + tax in the crate. Paid for it and racing each weekend with a paper route!

You ain't kiddin'.
All a guy has to do is stroll around a dealers showroom floor and take note of the prices on street bikes vs there dirt bike prices. Hang on to your lower jaw. Dirt bike prices aren't too high-they're outragous these days.
You get a WHOLE LOT more motorcycle for your money in a street bike vs a dirt bike. (granted $2-3k more)
Yeah, I get it.......you're paying for the R & D on the dirt bikes, but it's gotten crazy.
Buy pre-owned-let someone else take the hit....

Btw, quite a few guys ride YZ250s on the ST trails...good motor & suspenders.

I just bought a brand new 2011 yz125 4 months ago for just around 4500 OTD right off the show room floor. They've had another one sitting there for 4,999 since....2011 and no one has touched it. I don't know if lowering the price would change anything but I jumped on that deal as soon as I saw it. Such a solid bike for the price.

A rules change might help, nobody wanted to ride a 4 stk in schoolboy 1 because it has to be 150cc, but then they just created another schoolboy class that lets 250f's race 150cc 2 stks. Evidently there's not enough money in competitive 2 stks.

Thru 2005 I was still buying YZ250's for $4880 otd. People that still buy 2 stks would buy one somewhere, might as well keep the YZ around & get them acquainted with the brand, eventually they'll realize its easier to accept the 4 stk business model than to keep paying the same & be at a disadvantage & also have to work much harder on the bike.
