I rode my new 3 stroke for the first time today.

Edited Date/Time 3/9/2013 7:03am
I put a 9 oz flywheel weight on my 250 two stroke and it was magical. It basically cured my arm pump and it was still just as fast. It made it feel like a four stroke. I weigh 170 so the 250 is a little bit too much bike for me but it made it so much easier to ride. I recommend it to anyone. Only downside was that it did make it a little bit harder to slow down going into corners. But we all need to carry more speed in corners anyway, right? (sorry this thread isn't about yellow flags)

I've been thinking about putting a weight on my YZ125. Does anybody have any experience doing that?

Dude, you crazy !! Put it towards a big bore kit or a pipe if you dont already have one.

Got a pipe and silencer, and don't really want a big bore kit. The tracks up here tend to be really dry and silty. I'm hoping the flywheel weight will help with wheelspin.

Very common addition to 250s motocrossers being made "woods built". Helps take some of the angry hit away.
Try a G2 throttle cam assy w/ the 400 lobe it comes with for even more controllabilty out of corners/techncial areas, & play with the c/shaft sprocket.

Use the clutch lever instead !!

I wouldn't put one on a 125. A 250 is a completely different animal. You have to fight to keep your bike in the power and I have no shortage of power. I would get a big bore kit. I rode a ktm 144 and loved it.

you can put steel plates in your 125 clutch and it will help and works like a light flywheel weight.
You will notice a difference if you aren't running steels today.
I have the KTM 150 with steel plates and it is so much more fun to ride than all the 450's i have owned put together.

this is good to see, I have thought about getting a 250 smoker and doing the same since i'm only 165lbs. There was an MXA article a while back where Jody did the same to his YZ and sent his jug to PC for Mid Range porting. He too said it was like riding a 3 stroke. Awesome work man.

I put a Steahly on my KX500 and it really helped. Great for hare scrambles and trail riding. Cool

Did you have to run the spacer in between the cover with that one?

No I didn't. The directions said as long as you have a stock cover you don't have to use the spacer and I didn't have any clearance issues. The install was really easy. You just need an engine lock up tool that you can get really cheap on ebay to prevent the piston from moving while you crank on the flywheel. I think next I'll try one of those throttle cams to smooth it out even more.

I ride a lot of desert and used to race grand prix. I got my head decked instead of running a fly wheel weight. I love the power of a 250 but don't like the top end. Varner did the work. I have been interested in flywheel weights though.

i always thought about getting one,but i like my angry snap when i crack the throttle to much.
3/7/2013 7:34pm
I love the snap too but it usually ended with me having horrible arm pump and jumping front end high looking like the squid that I am. I'm just trying to get as close as I can to the four stroke feel on a budget!

Awesome. I've had an 02,06 and now I have 2 09 yz 250's. Had a weight on the 06 but not the newer ones. Now I think I know why they beat me up. Gonna order one up.

Great job vanillaice!!! Another one that's converted. Flywheel weights make a big difference. I have the Stealthy on both my 08 RM125 and 08 RM250. Anyone who says use a clutch instead is missing the point. The reason four strokes are so popular is because they're easier to ride, but also more tractable coming out of corners. Two strokes are notorious for major wheel spin when on the pipe, whereas with four strokes you can roll the throttle on and limit wheel spin. Flywheel weights make the bike more tractable, which helps make the bike hook up better. If you're spinning you're not moving forward as quickly as you could be.

You used blue loctite right???

That makes sense. When he asked about using it on a 125 I thought it sounded kinda silly because the power is manageable but even if that's the case it still smooths the power out for you and makes for better traction. I'm probably going to end up experimenting with bigger weights just to see how it changes the power characteristics.

When I was researching them I read some rumors that Tim Ferry used one on his YZ 250. Maybe I'll call into Pulp one night and ask Mathes (haha).

I didn't use loctite. I thought the directions had said not to use it so I've just been checking it religiously. I should have worked out an endorsement deal with Steahly because I would think now that two strokes are making somewhat of a resurgence and everyone has been spoiled by four strokes lately these flywheel weights are going to sell like hot cakes!

You also have to ask yourself what you are doing by putting extra weight on the end of your crank, and how that affects the power characteristics of your motor. 250 two stroke, for the average guy on a motocross track, great investment. A 125, whose power is seriously limited when comparing it to other bikes in it's class, I think you are mad to put one on. Keep new tyres on the back of it and hold it on.

Not to hi jack. But I have a boyesen ignition cover. There is no clearance between the weight and the cover so i have to use the stock plastic cover.

Bike won't turn over and the flywheel has a nice circular groove etching into the inside of that cover with one kick. 1/8 distance to the peg of a kick.

Is there a spacer kit to make clearance and have enough clearance between the shifter and cover ?

Yes there are plastic spacers, just use longer bolts.

This should take care of it. I guess the aftermarket ignition covers are a little tighter so you have to get a spacer.

Exactly, that's the one I had on my 06. Actually I may have it still out in the shop. I had to use it on the bike with a boyesen cover, stock worked fine. Now i can't decide between a 9oz or 11oz. I believe dowdy ran real heavy weights on his rm's. I've got two 2009 yz 250's, think I might try the 11oz.

I ran one for a while on my CR500AF and liked the way it made the bike hook up, but mine made the bike vibrate more (and it already vibrates some). I probably should have sent it back and gotten a replacement, that was my mistake. But it definitely made the bike less tiring to ride and more fun.

probably because its a big piston, there's less vibration on 250's

Last time my wife's rm 125 was at the mechanics he lathed down the flywheel. Don't know how much but it pulls harder out of corners now, there is no way I would add weight on a 125

How do bikes turn with a heavier flywheel?

I found my CR500 aluminum conversion turned much better with a lighter 250 flywheel. Easier to lay over and wanting less to stand back up.
