The pits have become retarded, you gotta be there at 9am to get a ticket to be back in line at 2 to wait 1hr to get a autograph. Who remembers the 80's and 90's when you could just roam around the pits and literally walk right up to the back doors of the semis. That was before the night show, afterwards was the real hit rocks all kinds of jerseys, plastic, goggles ect.... Being given away. Good times.

Why do fans feel like riders owe them so much? They are there to do their job (ride motorcycles if you forgot). If you are a road worker trying to lay pavement down and had people coming up for autographs it keeps you from concentrating on your job, why is moto different? The riders don't make you pay to come watch them ride. They started riding because they love it, not so they can give back to the fans when they turn pro. No fans=no money=no RV.
Dude has always been gruff. Maybe it's just his style. He doesn't do anything to help the sport outside of racing. Most of the other guys do things for their fans off the track. . The sooner he learns to enjoy the experience like k-Dub talks about, the sooner he will have fun and lose the attitude. He trains hard and he's damn sure fast on the track, but that's only half of the job.
This is entertainment...it is more than just racing.

He sure does get a lot of cheers from the crowds at the races. Quite a few for a rider that is supposed to be hated in some viewers eye's.

Sponsors are not paying them for nothing.
So do you go to the stadium to watch races or bug the riders (not all riders I am sure feel like they are being bothered but that is how personalities work)? What i am saying is the mentality behind getting stuff from the riders is whats wrong. Certain riders will still mingle with the fans because that is who they are. Why not commend Villopoto for his work ethic and drive to get his job done?

Villopoto just does his job and goes home. He can take the aggressive moves and he can dish out the aggressive moves. He lets his riding do the talking. I respect that. If you changed your title from "most unpopular" to "greatest", this might be a relevant discussion. He has a lot of fans.

Exactly my point. He is judged, but on his shortcomings which is going to happen but will never be fair because of society's mentality. Not everybody is as outgoing as some of the riders. This is entertainment...it is more than just racing.
I like his style, I think if I was a young gun on the very top tier I would probably be the same way. But then again I have never understood the enjoyment of an autograph and I have never asked for one. I pay to see them race not put on a smile and pretend to like me. Some guys (like Kdub) actually do enjoy the interaction with fans which is awesome but probably not everyone's cup of tea.
I get the feeling when he retires he will head for the hills to hunt and fish to enjoy the good life, which I can relate to. Good for him.

Is he fast? yes
Does he work hard like the other racers? Yes
Does he have a colorful personality or at least seem gracious like other racers? NO
Used to pull for him, in his 250F days, and his first year on the 450, but I root for another rider now

I like RV. I think he does have a cool personality too. I have seen him messing around with Nick Wey and Weimer and they were hilarious. I like his no bullshit approach. Villopoto isnt fake. He is a real rider and doesnt put on a phony act for the media, and some fans do appreciate it

I agree with ya, not everyone is going to be Pastrana. And yes seems these days, especially on this board, you can't not like a rider. I have favorite sports teams and players, I hate some players and riders, even though they have never done anything to me. Seems on this board, because someone can do something better than you, you should like them. Don't confuse hate for lack of respect. Just one of those topics that won't go away.

RC, CR, JS, RJ, DB, JMB, and many more all have been hated at one time or another by the majority of the voices. It's part of the climb to the top. The only one who hasn't been hated is TP. Well, The Man was very frustrated with him for a while there.

Villopoto is hired to win races...true, but he is also hired to do PR. The only reason the factories race is to sell motorcycles, to people who you say he has a right as a person to tell to F-off. That might be true of his right "as a person", but as a professional athlete hired to win races AND to do PR...he gives up that right (not saying RV has ever said that). I just wanted to point that out, because it was one of the dumbest things I've read so far in this thread...

...that and that crap about a kid striving to be better because he gets snubbed for an autograph from his favorite rider. Blink

I was huge RV fan when he was on 250s. He an Townley had some epic battles. He seems to be a little cocky these days. He is one bad man on a motorcycle. He may even be a solid guy, but he just comes off as cocky to me these days,

They didn't like the guy because he was doing what he wanted to do, and not what they wanted him to do.
