Is RV turning out to be one of the most unpopular champions ever?

The internet is the most popular it has ever been, this is why it appears the way it does.

I don't see how anyone could not like RV. Well except for his competition. After watching that show on CBS, he has been through alot. What I like about him is he is not happy unless he wins. Everyone else in the circus is happy with a podium or top 5. Ok, James also likes to win....he works his A$$ off and it shows. If there is traction out on the track he is gonna be hard to beat period! It's not his fault the AMA has its head up its A$$!

I think when u have the #1 plate its just part of being a champion. And he is. If he loses the #1 plate this yr, next year more people will be cheering for him cause theyll say hes the underdog. Haters will always hate. Where in the midst of the best sx season ever!

Dude can ride a scoot, but he seems selfish to me. Easy for me to say, I'm just an average smuck.

But, in TO, he walked by the fans in the autograph line at the pit party like they didn't exist, I was shocked!

Can ride a bike faster than lightning, but not much personality....just reads the sponsor board.

The average fan seems to love him in TO, but who doesn't love a winner?

Great rider, understands the business side of making the hay when the sun shines, but he kind of takes the fun out of it.

Hey, I like Stewart's hat, lol.
Did the same thing in ATL after the first practice of the day. Stewart came in the pits, stopped immediately after entering, got off the bike, gave a few high fives and very quickly made his way to the trailer. Tomac (I know east coast is for fun) stopped, got off the bike, gave high fives, signed some stuff, took a couple pics with some kids and also very quickly walked back to his trailer. Barcia got off, gave some fives, acknowledged the fans, and went to the trailer very quickly. Same for Canard, Reed, and a several other riders. I heard a bike picking up speed outside the pits, and RV comes in hot, killing the engine right before entering the pits and coasted out of sight, weaving in between people and not acknowledging anyone. This is all after the FIRST practice of the day. I've never been a fan of his and could care less, but it bothered me seeing kids get so excited about seeing RV, then instant disappointment on their face as he coasted off to his trailer. A simple wave or some form of acknowledgement would have made those kids' day. I know these riders have a lot going on on race day with bike setup, autographs, etc, etc, etc, and can't mingle with everyone. But a couple waves to some kids on the way back to the trailer wouldn't kill anyone.

Unpopular on this board and unpopular in life are two opposite things. RV could sign his name every waking moment of his day. Like RV has said this sport is not the most important thing in his life. That's a very smart man.

I respect him as a champion and as a guy who relentlessly pursues his goal of winning as much as he can while he can-a disciplined focus like his is hard to come by and harder to maintain. Dungey is the same way, which is why I respect these two so much. The dude is a badass racer, old school and he isn't in this sport to be the prom king. He is here to win, period, and he does a pretty good fucking job of that I must say.

Imagine what he'd be like if he actually enjoyed and wanted to do this. You never know what you have until its gone. I think JS, and CR have come to terms with that in the past few years, RV will get better as his years wind down.

I have watched 20 time WoO champ King Kinser walk right through a crowd signing autographs and posing for photos.

I watched Indy 500 winners walk through crowds at airports and pick up their luggage, like everyone else,

Too many swelled heads in MX/SX

Sorta on the same line as your thinking, i was watching NASCAR, and Kyle Busch stands in a trailer behind a big window with just a little slot underneath that people pass a piece of paper through, he signs it, and the next person shoves their paper in the slot. It just felt so impersonal and "sterile" as compared to what we see in our sport where the fans are so much more "hands on".

It was rather strange to see, but then again he is dealing with literally 100x's the amount of people a SX/MX rider deals with. I cant imagine dealing w/ just HOW many people they have to in NASCAR.
That and the fact that Kyle is a douchebag and probably has a history with people wanting to let him know that...Laughing
I have been to lots of cup races and met drivers. Pretty much the same vibe as motocross IMHO some are more personal than others, no big deal we are all just people.

Halarious!!! RV has accomplished more in his Career than 99.99999% of the all the riders who've ever competed for AMA SX and MX titles.

Why do fans feel like riders owe them so much? They are there to do their job (ride motorcycles if you forgot). If you are a road worker trying to lay pavement down and had people coming up for autographs it keeps you from concentrating on your job, why is moto different? The riders don't make you pay to come watch them ride. They started riding because they love it, not so they can give back to the fans when they turn pro. I always thought the point to going was to watch good races, so what if your kid didn't get an autograph. Its good for them to hear no every once in while. With today's society everybody thinks they are owed something by someone else. Let them do what they do, if they want to be friendly, great, if not, that's who they are just like you are who you are. They have people crawling up their asses all day, when they are coming in from practice is not the time to start asking for autographs. They have autograph sessions for a reason. I think people should look up to his worth ethic more and try to replicate that, might end up getting some more stuff done and make a positive impact on society instead of bagging on riders on some message board.

I don't usually post this kind of stuff (or any stuff at all for that matter) but some of you guys need to worry about yourselves more and get your own shit in order.

So if nobody showed up at the stadiums to watch these guys race how long would someone be willing to pay them to race?

Sponsors are not paying them for nothing.

I know the management is feverishly working to defend RV, but he's an a--hole. All in all though, most winners are. Damon Bradshaw, Bon Hannah, Rick Johnson, Jeff Matiasevich, Jeff Stanton were all pretty dicky. RV is just stepping in line. Of course no cares as long as they're winning. So is RV becoming one of the most unpopular riders? No

^^ THis ^^
I guess us fans like the riders that seems to enjoy their jobs. When their carreer wind down they realize that this fame thing is not going to last forever. It seems like RC (the last years), KDub, Reed and even now JS7 appreciate what the sport brought to them.
I hope RV will chill out a bit after he will get all the records he wants, maybe he'll turn into a very likeable guy. Right now... not so much.
3/4/2013 11:10pm
I've never met him or tried to meet him but I figured he would be pretty cool considering he was in Alessi's shadow his entire amateur career and now he's the guy to beat every weekend.

I used to be a big rv2 fan.. especially after he dominated the mxdn on a 250....but... After taking dungey out n st louis 2 years ago, and his seeming disregard for red-cross flags i am no longer a fan....

Sad to say but...yes!

Ricky wasnt very popular when he went to the "dark side" (Honda).
Then at Suzuki and helped revive the US MXdN tradition of winning, he become the peoples hero!

I think the (little) dispute before MXdN 2011 of who should have No 1 on the bike for the US team is showing a bit bighead, ego and childishness.

I hope RV dominates SX & MX in 2013, gets booed a lot and pack he´s stuff and go race the GP´s 2014.
If he comes back as a GP Worldchamp and continues winning in the US he is a real hero...

Badass throttletwister, sure.
Likeable, not.

Riders have a lot going on.. They have to focus... Thats why they are giving a time slot to sign autographs, and talk to the public. Imagine if he had to do that all day in the pits.. Talk and sign autographs, They wouldn't get anything done for the race. But it also has been stated before that he is a little shy and not very outgoing when it comes to talking and being in public
