Racing a stock bike in supercross?

Yeah man it's got stock graphics with no sponsor stickers!

I don't believe it either. He must have at least kit suspension and a bunch of engine mods. But he runs the stock engine plugs, so I must be wrong.

One needs to define "stock". Shorts suspension seems to upgraded heavily by Enzo, at least just by the looks of it. Or maybe they just put kashima coating on lower legs and new anodizing on upper for the bling factor?Grinning

This is newer a subject that is going to be sorted. I picture a stock bike with some tweeking could win a main, but I suggest most part of it being a winner is that the rider "feels" it's up for the task, a good mechanic and that the feeling might be heavily clouded by a PC/HRC-logo, different anodizing, thicker tubing promoted by Kehoe saying "this is the shit".

I don't see a certain pattern where riders actually performs better on factory bikes, they seems to be equally good despite, other than when the teams are suffering from drama.

What I also feel is when people get a shot, as this is your chance to prove yourself, or you have to prove yourself to get a shot which could describe Short at any given time in his career. It makes them step up, maybe go outside their confort zone, which is sometimes necessary to win...

Again, we know shit before this thread, and for sure will know shit afterwards as well...Grinning

Maybe the only certainty is having a light bike (close to rule weight) with enough useable power with good sneakers. I figure there's a point with the weight/CC rules?

Gooood loorrdd, would people fing quit with the Shorty "stock" bike bs... That bike is far from "stock", yes it is vastly different and probably light years closer to stock than what his old bike was but everyone is really exaggerating the whole thing.. I think Shorty is pure awesome, and deserves an infinite amount of credit for what he is doing now and has done in the past, more money from honda than what the factory guys get because of how he is marketing their equipment, but maybe it is just that the whole "factory" setup was so out of whack for him & the closer to stock honda feel just better suits his style and comfort level..?? But seriously, can those that are doing so please quit saying that he is on a "stock" bike, it is ridiculous to say that.. Seems just this week or last I remember a story on Pulp show about Reed saying that he was only .5 seconds faster on his works bike than a "stock" bike, but who knows what his definition of "stock" is either.

I don't think Hannah's bikes were production based but for one florida winter series and maybe a SX season early on, maybe 77 or preseason 78. His later bikes were full works OW's in 78, 79, and even the 81 when he battled with Howerton.

I had the pleasure of breaking in Hannah's and Savitski's 250Fs before the 1979 Winter-AMA Series along with a mechanic (Dean Calhoun) out of Barney's in St. Pete. They were fresh out of the crate, and dang near box stock when groomed to final race form- different bars, modified pegs and suspension. I imagine they changed out the rubber, but how special could that have been in '79?

For real ,, I bet there is more money spent on upgrades on his bike then the bike itself cost.. Far from stock

As far as definitions of "stock", to me that means a bike that a local rider would be able and likely to build. By that standard, Shorts bike is probably stock, and I imagine the main functional difference between his current bike and the LMC bike is probably sophisticated suspension and total weight. I don't remember where I saw it, but someone wrote somewhere that his stock bike is about 10 to 15 lbs heavier than his LMC bike was. And he has done great with it over the last couple of races, but you have to keep in mind that a lot of top guys are riding injured or have been taken out in second turn pileups in the last two races.

Using that definition, this would be a "stock" CRF50......

I don't think most local guys would be likely to build that, but you might live in a better neighborhood than I do.

I dont believe his bike is anymore stock then say chad reeds bike the first few supercross rds in 11. Its not a stock bike once you change anything on it. What they should be saying is privateer ride not stock ride. i am pretty sure most bikes other then big factory teams bikes come off a show room floor. I am not trying to hate i love the fact that he is out there giving it to factory riders but i am not going to believe that his bike is stock.

Putting someone on a completely stock bike would mean he's also on STOCK suspension.

So you want to take a million dollar talent, put him on a stock bike with stock suspension when he's been testing a factory race bike the entire off season and see how it goes?

Wouldn't Kawasaki have more to lose if RV had a bad race?
You must not have read much of what I had written. RV wrapped the c/ship up 4 races from the end of the season and it would have been the perfect time to go out on a factory prepped and tuned "stocker". Everyone here discounting what a team of top guys are capable of doing is a little insulting....Laughing

And just how much time did Short have to get a bike ready for the next race after getting shit upon?

We'll see what happens when we have a race without the yard sale at the beginning. Also, wasn't it John Dowd that raced a basically stock KTM 520 in the outdoors (with respectable results) where he said that the only thing he changed was the tires and exhaust? Aside from all that, isn't the suspension and tires probably the most important 2 things on a supercross bike?
I like Short, best of luck to him. I think he's a good role model for the kids.

If Andrew Short could get a top 10 on one of my 450's then I would say Supercross is possible on a stock bike... I wish my bike had what Shorts bike has.

I define a stock bike by the rules for Loretta Lynn's stock classes.

Parts/components that may be replaced or added include but are not limited to: fuel filters, air filters, gas line, handlebars, crossbar pads, non-metal open-ended hand- guards, serrated foot pegs, lower fork leg protectors, spokes and nipples, decals, spark plugs, spark plug caps, sprockets, handlebar mounts, seat covers, upper triple clamp.

The kill switch must be stock and fully functioning.

Oil injection systems must be present and fully functioning. Only oil may be put in the reservoir. Pre-mix gasoline is NOT permitted in the oil injection system.

Gaskets, backfire screens, O-rings or other components may NOT be removed. Port clean-up is NOT permitted.

Changes or modifications to the EFI Throttle Body are NOT permitted; Aftermarket ECU units are NOT permitted; Programming or mapping changes to the stock OEM unit are permitted.

Aftermarket front fork holeshot devices and metal hand guards are NOT permitted.

The lower/bottom triple clamp may NOT be changed.

Rims can be replaced with OEM or aftermarket rims of the same size and width.

In a sport that is almost entirely mental you think giving RV a stock bike is a smart?

Shorts bike had no motor work, just a high compression piston.

Enzo did the suspension.

Anyone saying it's fully mod is either dumb or has no idea what they're talking about.

Key word there is "HAD".

That was 3 races ago. The bike has been tweaked a bit since then.

It's not close to being Reeds PC bike that he had. (I should say bikes)

I haven't heard of much being done to Shorts bike.

A stock bike that had been completely disassembled and every part gone over with a fine tooth comb by a factory team? You betcha! He had a 100 point lead. Talk about a mental boost.

Yeah cause a stock bike runs great on race gas choppy. i understand u can run race gas on a stock motor with just a piston but i find it hard to believe someone like shorty is just going to put a piston in and not get any work done to the head or trans. its definetly not stock and probably has more work then half the privateers. Choppy unless you put his piston in for him you dont know anymore then any of us.

Thanks for the video 1911. I think Short explains how stock his bike is and that a close to stock bike can make a main event.

I also like how Racer X asked him this question again and it brings awareness to our sport that you do not need a unobtainium bike to compete at the top level in this sport.

Interesting video, already knew that was Kranyak's rig but didn't know his bikes were from Jeff Kent. Plus he was faster than 2 Factory Honda's today. Go Short! Cool
