Since a rookie fresh out of the 125 class went to Round 1, with the gate full of heavy hitters (Stanton, Bradshaw, ect) and mopped the floor with them for 10 of 15(?) rounds.

Could history repeat itself with Barcia?

He is running the #15....backwards. He's on a Honda. Stanton himself is his surrogate daddy. Justin and Jeremy both start with a J.

All kidding aside, as much as people love MC, those who lived through those years of him winning 13-15 races a season.... talk about leaving the stadium after he holeshot to beat the crowd out of the parkinglot.

I think Barcia will do well but nothing like what MC did that year. The field is too stacked against him. I also don't think he has a chance in hell of being even close to MC in championships or as a champion. Plus, his antics have already turned off a lot of fans. Roosting the track doctor because you are having a temper tantrum has a way of turning people off.

The kid is fast. If he does not have any brain fade, he could win. It will be difficult to de-throne the champ. He does want anyone moving in on his territory on top.

I used to root for anyone BUT McGrath. I get so bored when one rider dominates for prolonged periods.

For some reason Carmichael's reign is probably the only time a riders superiority didn't bother me so much. I don't know why, I guess he was exciting to watch even when he was way out front and Im much more of a Motocross fan.

Got tired of MC winning it ALL, but he was and still a hero of mine.
I have a vague memory of Vuillemin breaking a streak at Minneapolis.

For my family it was later "ABC"...Anybody But Carmichael.

I was at McGraths first win at Anahiem, and I feel old after I realized that was 20 years ago.

Oh man....I hear ya. Wow....20yrs?.....Where the heck did all that time go?

Watching MC's career start to finish was a pleasure for sure. I'm glad I was around during his reign. MC is a legend for sure.....and it when it came to SX.....nobody ( and I mean nobody!) was better than him.

Just think if he would have trained and took the outdoors serious his whole career instead of just a year or two

Back to the OP -- I don't see it happening quite like Bradshaw or MC. But then again, I didn't see MC being able to do that either! We have already seen Barcia's cards at MEC and in the 450 nationals in '11 -- he is an instant contender but I wouldn't say he is 'next level' from the current top guys.

McGrath had perfect timing to go along with his indoor skill, But Bradshaw was not Bradshaw after 92, Bayle quit in 1992 and Stanton left in 93 and wasnt on his level. Not taking anyting away from MC but Barcia has way way deeper field, Due in part because of the evolution of our sport, we have never ever seen the ammount of talent on 1 track that A1 will have. If Barcia wins in this first year it would be un real.

he'll always be the king of sx and i'll admit i was a little bit gutted that dunge won his rookie season too Smile
was watching some of the season reviews from the early 90's (thanks terry) and its cool to see MC hanging it out at times as i was used to the super smooth precise style of later 90's MC

It is pretty mind blowing. The Pontiac race that year was the first supercross race I ever watched. I started recording it ASAP, right around the time Jeremy crashed into a haybale going up the elevator in his heat. From then on my mom let me stay up until 2:00 AM on Thursday nights to watch and record the races. Good times...

Though now I would probably be bored out of my mind if someone dominated like that again, I was in pure awe as a kid. His progression level was so far (probably close to ten years) ahead of the competition. I remember him in '94 blowing by Stanton in a set of whoops at Huston like Stewart did to RC in Dallas 2006. And to think he had only been racing dirt bikes for around seven years at that time!

I really think his bmx background put him a notch above the competition technique jumping wise. He was a California State Champion two years in a row I think, which is a big feat considering how big bmx is there. He was the first the emphasize staying low over jumps and seemed to attack the track on his Honda like it was a one lap race. https://youtu.be/FAopIF7Ljmo

Barcia is legit. While I don't think he'll be a title threat this year, I do believe he'll win multiple races.

McGrath? I can look back now and appreciate his work, but I detested him back then. Nothing personal, I just hated going to the races (or watching) and knowing who was going to win before the gate dropped. One of the reasons I liked Yogi so much was that he had the audacity to actually race McGrath.

Nothing better than watching a legend breaking records win time and time again. Same with Everts and Carmichael. We miss those guys, are we going to miss the present guys when they retire? Sure Reed, Stewart, Dungey and Villopoto are good, but none of them are Everts, McGrath or RC. History is what it is all about.

The big talk on the streets, at exactly this time 20 years ago, was that an unproven kid, first time out on a 250, went over to Bercy and waxed everyone's ass.

Funny, considering Barcia, 20 years later just won the now "premier" off-season event, the MEC.

The parallels between MC's 92/93 and Barcia's 12/13 campaign are striking.

If you recall, MC won his regional 92 SX title, but got beat by Emig and Swink (his team mate) outdoors. Barcia won his 12 SX title, and finished behind Bagget and Tomac (his team mate) outdoors

Thus far, its been a virtually identical situation that i've been watching relatively closely.

It might happen at some point, but Barcia is a member of the current paradigm and isn't poised to change MX/SX. He will undoubtedly win this year but he won't dominate. I think McGrath was a paradigm shift with his super fluid style honed from BMX. And JBS was a change in the paradigm as well, he just couldn't keep it off the ground. Barcia doesn't have that something different (which you can't explain but know it when you see it) that would allow for complete domination and his peers have been as good or better than him most of the time.

I know exactly what you are saying. Some guys' changed the sport. MC's smoothness was a sharp contrast to a bulldog like Stanton, or an out of control Cooper. Then Carmichael comes in, in an era when all 20 riders on the gate were at the same strip club the night before the race, (Mons Venus in Tampa) and brings it to another level with O'mara and Baker.

Pastrana could have been the next "guy", I dont think anyone to this day has the sheer bike handing skills he does. Anyone that can wheelie an entire rhythm lane WHILE looking 30 rows up into the bleacher and nodding at the crowd is a freak.

Who will the next guy be? Some might say it's Adam C, but I don't see him doing anything otherworldly, yet.

Many will disagree with this, but I think Stanton took the old entertaining bam-bam and is turning him into another Stanton.

I think the next big guy will be the reverse-Doug Henry, if you know what I mean.

For someone to do what MC did will take innovation. JS had the best shot to break his record with his "new" style of riding a SX track. However that feat looks suspect at this time. It will take someone to come along with another innovation that elevates the speed again..doesn't seem possible but who knows....maybe there is an X-man out there that can alter gravity riding a mini somewhere.
