Grinning Cool, might take that diagram with me!

Although the stoofvleessaus concerns me slightly. Whats the circular fish cake looking thing on the plate?

I wanted to go this year so bad. I'm surprised at the beers you guys have posted thus far. Duvel is awesome, but most of those (to me) are just mass produced ambev selections. You got the trappist brews like achel, orval, chimay, rochefort and westmalle. Then the huge selection of non trappist abbey beer kasteel, st bernadus, st fuellien, maredsous, grimbergen, abbey De rocs. US craft brew industry is catching up, but you just can't match the sweet clean flavor of a traditional Belgian dubbel or triple. Belgium is one of the cradles of beer creation, enjoy yourselves and visit a monastery while you are over there. How far is westvleteren brewery from lommel? You guys going over have a chance to drink locally sourced, one of the most sought after and critically acclaimed beers in the world.
+1 We got the best trappist and our 'pils' is not better then any other in the world. But the ones we linked are sure worth a taste. Smile
Skipp the Leffe tough, that beer is an insult.

Westvleteren is on the other side of the country, towards the coast. A 2u30mins drive.

Stoofvlees from a 'frituur' is dodgy, in a way that i can be good or really bad. The best stoofvlees is homemade.
It might look bad but believe us Belgians that it's good. You always have to go lie down after it because you ate to mutch. Grinning

People from Lommel maybe can say what frituur the toerists best go to. Not all firturen are good and worth it.

2.5 hours is not that bad actually. I have to drive 1.5 hours to get to my favorite track, and every track i go to is over an hour. I'd make the trip 100%. i really should have found a way to afford this trip, I am getting all excited just looking at the beer and food. MXDN, BONUS!

We "Real" Belgians eat once a week Belgian fries from the "Frietkot" and I do it mostly after a motocross day!

That stuff is fantastic, but I've never tried it at a fry stand, only my moms.

That really looks delicious. The beer and the food. Belgium is definitely a country I want to visit.

I wish I could afford the money and time off work to go. Some of us Americans love Duvel, Chimay, Delirium, and the millions of others. So much so that'd I'd even listen to all of your BS before the race (but hopefully not after!). I've never been but it sounds like an amazing country.

Best part is: it's made with .... BEER !

the circular fish cake looking thingy is a "kaaskroket", simply put fried cheese.

Go to a frietkot, and point at things in the counter.

and don't eat fries with ketchup, but with mayonaise, belgian style.
Pulp fiction had it all wrong.

Thanks! Belgians are very nice people, they always try to speak your language and stuff like that! Stuff you really should try if you are here for the MxDN or later on in your life:

Name: "Broodje Mexicano" if you translate it it sounds like: "Bread the mexicano" (Mexicano is a fried snack).

Name: "Smoutebollen" - It in fact warm donuts with sugar on it! On every fair (don't know if thats a good word) is a "Smoutebollen" shop.

If you go to a restaurant you can ask mussels with Belgian fries. Thats also a specialty from the country.

Also if you see a shop that has fresh warm Brussels Waffles, buy one or ask for a waffle in a restaurant or pub/tea house.
And then off course the beers!

I unfortunately can't afford to make the trip, but have been enjoying my favorite Belgian beers lately...

Yes, you must put mayo on the frites. The stoflees is good on top of the frites with mayo is great. Do NOT eat the CANNONBALL at the Fritur stand!!!!!

One of these years when the MXoN's is across the pond.....I AM GOING! Not just for the race , but spend something like a week there and try to see as many countries as I can. Maybe two weeks. So many different cultures over there I would love to see.

It's really something every American should do. It definitely expands your perspective of where we stand in the world. I came a way with a different outlook on America, I feel like we are the more or less an offspring of Europe and the more I learn about Europe the more I understand about America. We went over a few summers ago (The inlaws live in Holland) and we spent the better part of a month , we also brought the kids and had a blast. My father in law is Dutch and he is also a history professor over there and it really made the trip amazing, I learned a lot about the culture and area. We spent the majority of our time in Holland and the Ardenne region of Belgium and also snuck into Luxemburg for a a day as well. The countryside of Belgium has a lot of WWII history. Many of the towns still have American tanks staged at the entrance to the towns with monuments and writings of the battles that took place there. You would never think that those horrible events took place in such quaint beautiful villages that they are today. The soldier graveyards are very sobering.
