MX1 Race Report: …’that is the fastest I have ever seen anyone ride a motocross bike around a track….!!” I have been around this sport for 40 plus years and Ben Townley broke new ground for me on Sunday….I was dead-set mesmerised by his speed and control…..
And I was just one of the possibly 4000 spectators there who were witnessing the same thing….we were watching potentially the fastest rider on the planet right now right here at one of our humble local tracks……unreal!
Townley took all three race wins while fellow Kiwi Josh Coppins managed two thirds and a second for second overall just ahead of Suzuki’s new recruit Todd Waters who raced hard all days to three fourth places while Brits Brad Anderson and Billy McKenzie swapped podiums and DNFs on the day.
"Today was a good day, as I have said previously, I want to use these races as race preparation, my situation has changed and this series is not my primary focus." said the New Zealander. "I feel like am in some of the best form of my life, physically and mentally as well as my form on the bike. I am very happy on the Honda. I spent a lot of time with this Carlton Dry team, over the off season. They have put a lot of focus on me and we have come a long way." he concluded
Townley leaves for America this week to start testing for the opening round of the AMA Outdoor Nationals for Chad Reed’s TwoTwo Motorsports team. All I can say is that IF Townley rides like he did at Conondale in America I pity the yanks…..they are going to have to be on the gas to catch this very determined Kiwi.
“I feel like I can’t put a foot wrong right now,” Townley explained. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work after last year when everything went pear-shaped, but I believe my life and career are back on track now, and heading in the right direction.”
Jake Moss and Tye Simmonds rode ‘well’ on their privateer Honda’s while Jay Marmont battled a knee injury all day. Lawson Bopping was impressive at times while Cody Cooper was disappointing considering his experience at Conondale and tracks like this.
Notable mentions go to Craig Anderson who rode his arse off all day for 13th outright after hardly riding over the last month trying to get his team sorted and Daryl King who rode from 19th all of the way to the back of Jay Marmont in moto one before a post-race crash ended in a day ending injury….

I just prey he gets through the season unscathed. He deserves it after all the bad cards he's been dealt. Always been a fan of his and its so frustrating to see his career stutter along.

Hyperbole for sure ... I mean c'mon BT101 will undoubtedly be a threat but to say he may be the the fastest rider on the planet is really silly. Was the author of this article asleep for the last year or so? RV1 is the fastest man right now with RD5 right there with RV ... 1 and 1a depending on who is your favorite.
