looking to get a 250 2smoke for moto..ive been riding a 125 but the track i ride is NOT a 125 track...i have a kx 250 for offroad but with the setup im running for single track its not gonna work well at the track...

i know the newer CRs are "slow" but for me thats prob not a bad thing...is the last generation Rms that much better than the 04s??

toss up between these two

CR

RM

never been a huge suzuki fan but im not brand loyal...the track i ride is fast and loamy with big hills...

we have 2 250cc hondas 04 and 05. along with an 07 125

all are good bikes.

the RM may handle a little better but nothing beats hondas durability.

the CR isn't slow but if you rode it back to back with any newer 250 smoker including the RM it'd feel weak off idle

both are good bikes but if you plan on riding it alot and holding onto it i'd go with the honda as they are reliable and hold up great to abuse

i only ride hondas and suzukis so im not a fan boy...but the honda looks alot less roached out after putting hours on it.

you can't go wrong with either bike but if you go suzuki go with the 2004+

the rm is what I would recommend. I will say I have never ridden a cr 250 but I absolutely love my rm it handles awesome and has tons of power

Hands down go for the RM, they made alot of improvements from 04 up to the newest models, but the RM is still one of the best handling out there. That CR will have a powerband like a light switch.

I have rode both. I own a Suzuki because of that.

The 02+ CR's aren't slow, you just have to ride them like a 125. The 04+ RM's are the epitome of what a smoker should be. I ride a 02 CR250 btw..

MXA had a good shootout on these, but couldn't find it on their site. I believe they gave the RM250 high marks, but I'm not sure if it came in 2nd to the YZ. If I had a choice, I personally would get the RM. Honda pretty much gave up on advancing their 2-stroke, and just half-heartedly produced one till '07. Suzuki was beginning to get their RM dialed in, especially with Carmichael, and I believe they won the MXA shootout in '05 or '06. I'll bet tblazier has it.

that cr is sold anyways..ill prob throw the lightest flywheel weight u can get on it..im running a heavy one on my kx for offroad and it really makes a difference but it revs too slow for moto

That flywheel weight would probably make it perfect. Are you thinking like a 9 oz?

1600 is a great deal for that RM, my friend has a 6oz (may be 9oz) flywheel weight on his 05 RM, it made the motor feel a little more tame, big improvement with the weight.

I always thought the 2005 to 2007 CR250s were awesome.

How is your brother, KP, doing? That was a gnarly injury.

Are you still racing?

Kyles good. He's been back home since Wednesday of last week and is just on the long road to recovery now.
and no. Im not racing at all. Havent even thrown a leg over a bike since about September, which was Harts KX500AF.

Great news on you and your bro.

The KX500AF had to be a beast.

The RM probably has the better motor and more edgy moto handling. The Honda's are held back by their carburetor. A Keihin Air Striker carb from a 2000 Cr fixes that pretty much. I have a new to me 05 and put a new Keihin carb on it. There is a jetting kit for the Mikuni out there but a lot of people are way happier with the Keihin. FWIW a new RM cylinder costs nearly twice as much as a CR cylinder. The CR cylinder was about $40-$50 more than a plating job at Millenium.

The 04-07 CR250's work better with the short YZ/RM/SX PWK air strikers because they are the same 75mm length as the TPS equiped Mikuni TMX. The 02-03 CR250's work better with 91mm long '99/'00 CR250 Keihin because the non-TPS Mikuni TMX used on them is 85mm long.

I just installed a YZ carb on my '07 CR250. It requires that you plug the powerjet and rejet all the circuits like a non-powerjet PWK. Fit is perfect.

My two cents:

I've owned 5 yz250s (and a couple others not important for this) and still own one.

A customer just got an 07 cr250 (same as 05).

I'd say our bread and butter mod package is for the yz250, not to tute our horn or anything - but it's much faster than stock through and through - with excellent power character, (good roll on, bottom etc)

The customer's cr box stock surprised me, it was pretty damn fast, but had poor roll on (although good bottom at WOT). It also signs off too early.

We have been doing some "true" development with it (been given a "blank" check and lots of time for testing) and all I can say is holy shit these things can be fast. It's nothing to get 5 extra horses from them - with much improved over rev. Hell it's easy to get more than that - but where it still needs work is the roll on, which is where we are spending our current time.

But in latest back to back with our mod yz, our current mod honda was damn near a better motor (currently better peak power and over rev) - and the chassis is for certain better handling. If we (and I'm sure other builders have already) find just a tad better roll on character, I may be looking for a cr250 soon.

ive heard using a the 05-07 airboot on the 02-04 cr250s makes a big difference as well.

this is a hard decision...but the CR is sold so go w/ the RM

I did all the research and went with the screwtop AS. Easy to open the carb up for jetting changes. I had no problems at all getting it on, in fact, I was kinda surprised at how easy the air boot slid on. I also couldn't find a carb "cheap" enough to mess with and I had a time crunch. There was some info on TT regarding wiring the TPS to the CR harness. All I had to do was raise the needle 1 notch and go with a 42 pilot.

I think a '06+ 250SX 36mm carb may be the best way to get good roll-on power out of the 05-07 CR250. Lowering the cylinder .030" improved roll-on power on my bike. I'm experimenting with a YZ carb now.

my main concern is handling...coming off a 125 any 250 is going to have enough power..i can ride the whole track on my 125 there are just a couple jumps that if u dont hit PERFECT you arnt jumping them....i know the RMs handle really well i just wonder if they give up anything stability wise on the fast rough stuff...my 125 gets gnarly headshake and swaps at high speed on the downhills but its so light if u are on the pipe u can just power out of it...

i also wonder if i should spend the extra 8-1000$ and get an 06 Rm...im not really in a rush just thought those two bikes seemed reasonable if not too clapped out and they are close...ive seen some clean 06s for around 2500..im assuming the new ones have twin chamber forks and motor updates?? sorry for all the questions like i said im not a suzuki guy but i was always a big Guy Cooper fan when i was young haha
