My friend has similar project, with Pro Circuit pipe, black Excel wheels and other stuff. I just wanted to make sure he don't bother me next summer at the races...Wink

Your tranny gears are going to be weird no matter what you do w/ the sprockets. The XCs have a very low 1st gear so that the bike can do tight trails okay, then the middle 4 gears are really spaced out. I believe 4th gear on the XC is taller than 5th gear on the SX. Then 6th gear is really designed for fast fire roads and even pavement in some countries and therefore is very very tall.

I've ridden XC 300s on the track and they work okay, but not like an SX.

BTW, I just built a 314cc stroker kit (a KTM 300 is actually only 293cc) out of my 250SX. The sucker runs good!

So I shot my buddy Eric that owns works connection an email since I did not have jody's from mxa's email. I asked eric to see why in there latest issue on the 300 xc they made to a sx there running a 52 sprocket on it. For the life of me it did not make sense and I didn't want to buy 4 pockets trying to figure it out. This is Jody's reply

"Perhaps some of the confusion comes from countershaft sprockets. Some of the 300XCs come with a 13 (like the motocross bikes) and some come with 14 (as the specs call for). Willy Musgrave has taken over the testing on our bike and he is running 13/50, but thinks that he should run 13/49. If Hoss has the 14, then we needs to go to the 52. If he has a 13, then he needs to try to make second into first and third into second.

KTM has no explanation of why the bikes are different. They told us that it had a 14, but when we started messing with the gearing, it had a 13. No matter what, first gear is not usable on a motocross track and neither is sixth. Hope this helps, Jody"

That said mine does have the 13 counter sprocket while the manual and others I've read have the 14 . I'll be getting the 49

my 300sx

i went the other route making my 300sx and started with a 250sx and installing the factory 300sx kit. as for the engine i have a fmf factory pipe w/ shorty and a dicks modified carb and head (got to run her on 50/50 w/ 800). the suspension has been revalved on both ends and i shortened the pds shock and slid the forks tubes to balance the ride giving it a slightly lower ground clearance but it corners on rails. the whole package rips and best of all is a blast to ride. you ride the same tracks i do so come on by and give her a go.

I've looked at these gearing numbers before to try and decipher is their was an advantage to running an XC transmission and I've reached the conclusion that it's just too much of a compromise for MX.

Here is what is going to happen w/ your new gearing choice:

1st gear is only good for 2mph or less.
2nd gear will be equivalent to an SX 2nd gear but pull just a hair longer.
The jump to 3rd will be long from 2nd. 3rd gear will be really, really long. This might be useful if not entirely strong.
The gap to 4th, for an MX application will be excessive. In fact this 4th gear will be like being in 5th on an SX. But since 3rd pulled halfway into an SX 4th gear, the gap is not so huge.
5th will be be faster than any SX goes. All but useless on an MX track unless you hit the whoops at 70mph.
6th will be cool if you decide to ride your bike home down the 101 Freeway. Otherwise, completely useless.

Thanks for the info..
Ive actually changed the counter sprocket to a 14 and the rear to a 52 which seems about right for me. 13/49 would have been ok for the tracks I ride but 14/52 will let it pull a bit longer. Im sure ill go through more chain guides with this gearing but 14/52 seems the way to go. Im riding Hangtown today (hopefully) with this gearing change so ill know for sure.

For fk sake thank you!
Not to be an a$$ but what does it matter what i bought? I got an XC for a lot of different reasons and this is what I wanted to do. I could have got a 250 sx but I didnt want one I wanted the XC. Two big reasons
One is resale, I can sell this bike much easier than a 250 sx with a big bore, I know this because I know people with sx's and some have sat on them for months, 300 has a broader range of riders from motox to offroad its a great bike for anything.. The other reason is I dont trail ride but I really want to start doing it so this would be the perfect bike. If I get another thumper id like to keep this throw the big tank on it and im set.

Hoss, there's a great trip we take out to Smith Valley (northern Nevada), scheduled end of April. You'd have a great time there on that bike if you haven't been there before. I'll keep you posted.

I would not say its sponsor I do have a very good relationship with Motorex and really like there product. Ive used it a long time and used in Japanese bikes and ktms. I do like the factory look also but that is not the reason I run it, I run it on yamaha, suzuki, kawi ect. I get the stuff for a very good price from them. I know I know oil is oil just change it but ive done my own analysis on different oils and it is very good product.

As far as why I did a 300 xc instead of the 250 sx is for a few reasons. My buddy has a few 12' 250 sx and I do like them but the 300 is easier to ride (for me). I have not owned a 2stroke in 12 years and rode 500 2strokes for a long time so the big bore is what I wanted. Yes I could have just got the 300 kit but the main reason was the resale value. I know the market of used bikes pretty well and sell a lot of bikes for friends and the 300 xc will sell way way easier than a 250 sx , at least here in Northern California. Everything I took off is simple to put back on. Its roughly about a $1k dollar difference between the two but in resale the 300 holds it's value much better and to a wider range of riders from track to offroad they seem to love this bike.On top of that I like to build bikes up . Ive only ridden it a few times but holy crap it is fun to ride and for not riding a two stroke in 12 years I was able to go pretty much go the same speed on my buddy's 300 he did compared to my 350 sxf. The weight difference is HUGE between a 450 , no comparison between them and the fun factor rivals the 350 if not even more. Also, there just so damn simple to work on and no fuel pumps, clogged FI ect to ever worry about.
The suspension from Factory connection is by far the best suspension ive ever ridden on, ive had all the big name and local shops do bikes for me but this thing is like riding on air its unreal. I kick myself in the ass for never even giving the 2stroke a chance from the day the yz 400 came out but it only took about 5 laps on a friends 2stroke and it was a flashback and a whole lotta fun!
Shit dude, did we go to the same school?.?? I love my beast......go straight for the sx, much better setup out of crate...
