Ok, I kno atvs are for pussies but wanted honest opions from guys who have been to an atv national before and if it's worth going. Thinking about going to aonia pass to see the national. Since we in the southeast don't get a national figured I might as well support the closest thing we got but wanted to kno if it's even worth the time
Back then, basically all the best racers rode Honda 250r's or some variation thereof. Nowadays, there are a ton of different brands represented, but from what I understand the manufacturers are basically out of it (after returning briefly in the mid-2000's).
I would call ahead to find out when the pros are racing, because it is basically an amateur event with many, many classes over more than one day of racing. At least it was more than a day back when I followed it.
The Pro guys are really fast and some wild bumping and whatnot does occur, but it isn't as exciting as a dirt bike race. They aren't nearly as stylish, and the skill set is quite different. In your area, think blue-groove flat track with big assed moto jumps.
I would go if I were you though, just to see what it looks like to go that fast on an ATV. The pro guys rival the pro bikes in laptimes on occasion, but it is done much differently.

Instead of a typical local race where you watch them tear up the bike lines at an ATV only event they get a chance to form lines that cater to the ATVs and the racing can actually be pretty good.
Aonia was good last year and with it again being the opening round, it should be great.
The Pro classes has been shrinking in recent years but it is cool to see guys like Natalie and Byrd still running an incredible pace and whipping up on the young pups on a regular basis. Those guys are as focused and professional as any top bike rider, and they do it for less than even a journeyman pro bike racer.
The Amateur classes are really intense, especially the "B" classes.
the youth classes will make a 50cc bike parent appreciate racing bikes. The gates are full of $12k+ machines and it is not uncommon to see a third of them DNF.

for the record, i don't think atv-motocross riders are gay, i've ridden a quad around a moto-track once and will never again. not for me. some of the quad national guys are amazing at what they do.
now the dune-goons and morons with 4wd grizzlies... don't get me started on those guys
I think the best part about the ATV nationals (and my parents were cool with it HA) is there is constant racing all day long. You get pro motos and pro am unlimited motos on saturday along with the AM program. On Sunday you have the Pro-am production class and AM program. There is racing all day from 8 am until 5 or later. You will have a new found respect for the national guys from A to pro class I can promise you that.

Racing them? You'd have to be a lunatic.
They make a kit to convert a dirtbike to a quad.
