Why don't they tame the jumps down alittle and charge for the public to ride on Sundays. I would pay to ride it seems like there would be good money If they charged 40 bucks a head. That would be tight.

Because they have a contract with the arena that usually stipulates that the dirt has to be cleaned up and trucked back out by a certain time.
Usually within 24-48 hours unless they have another dirt event scheduled.
In those cases they will scap the track and pile the dirt.

Yup amateur day was the shit. I raced in the Kingdome in 82,83 and 84. It was awesome. Back then if you had a pit pass you could walk around on the stadium floor while the pros were racing.

I only got to race Amateur day at Seattle one time in 95. The track wasnt tamed down at ALL, they just put a single in front of the triple so no one could jump it. It was gnarly, and I rode the 125 D class. Freakin scary!

Foxboro, MA 1984 (Gillete Stadium nowadays). Pros on saturday, amateurs on sunday. Rode 125C felt like endless whoops. Well endless until I went off the track. Was a blast.

There aren't enough beds in the local hospitals to accomodate all the injuries..

Honestly, I'm sure it is a combination of insurance policies and contracts with the stadiums.

The Carmichael school/race day still runs the day after at Daytona if you wanna ride the gnarliest supercross track in the world, although it is a tamed down version of the track.

They did Atlanta in the early 80`s, maybe it was Houstan or New Orleans also, but not 100% sure.

In the late 70's and early 80's before it was moved to Whitney and Oak Hill, they used to have the GNC finals in the Astrodome on the Sunday after. Talk about carnage!

They did at lanta and other southeast supercrosses up until about 91.

The last couple years it was on Saturday morning.

Practice would start at about 6 AM and all the racing was done by 12:30.

It's been done. But a lot of guys get Supercross fever after watching the night before, and go nutso on the track, trying things they shouldn't do.

The last one I remember here in So. Cal. was at Anaheim (I think Sondra and her family ran that one), and there were tons of participants, but the track was pretty well baked, there were lots of crash delays, and I'm not sure how many people went home happy.

Depending on the week, there might be a big drive between rounds, so it's frequently a rush to get it torn down, cleaned up, and the equipment packed up to go. You'd be surprised at how much of the track is already gone by 1:00 am.

A lot of times Supercross and monster trucks are on back-to-back weekends, so it's not always a rush to get dirt out.

I did several in Atlanta and Charlotte in the 80's. It was a pretty regular deal back then. I remember they didn't even have to tame the tracks that much. Then I went one of the last ones during the early 90's and it was like..damn..I can't ride this shit. They carted off alot of riders that day. It ended soon after that. I can't remember the actual years.

I'm not real sure a pro could get around a modern supercross track with any speed on a late 80's bike. I don't think the forks from that era are up to the task.

I did Pontiac in '95 & '96. They tamed the track down quite a bit as I recall. Riding up into the stands was cool as hell. Also, the feeling you get when coming out of the tunnel to stage was awesome, I can only imagine how the pro's felt when the stadium was packed.

I had signed up for Anaheim in 2002, and it was a cluster. There were so many people trying to ride in multiple practices (jumping in front of the line to practice) that they finally called off all practice. I saw lots of guys coming off the track with broken bones before that, though - there must have been a lot of dudes on the track at once. Then, when my race got posted at #29, I figured I wouldn't make it out of there until 3 am on Monday and decided to leave. Bummer. I never rode a single lap.

I tried again at San Diego in 2003 and had a great time. Made the main from my heat race and took 11th, or something like that. The whoops were smashed down and they took out several of the jumps, but it was pretty tough nonetheless.

Yeah they did, my dad signed us up for every one of them that they held 02 and 03.

They did efinetly make the track more amateur friendly but the jumps still had consequences if you shorted them.

Even though there were 40 some odd races and they knocked the races down to 4 laps a peace, it was still one of the coolest things to ride down the tunnel and look up to the stadium.... definetly one memory that Ill carry with me

I remember 80-84 or 85 racing Fulton County stadium in Atlanta. It was the first race of the Triple Crown Series. Atlanta (sunday after the pros), Gatorback and then Daytona. That was a heck of a series. Last year I raced it (84 or 85) they had telephone poles under the dirt on the whoop section in Daytona and by the end of the first motos they were almost completely exposed. Send you a$$ over elbows if you weren't real careful, lol.

I've watched Newmann do some crazy stuff on a 74 model CR 250 he has, no lie we are talking a pretty tame triple that some guys weren't getting over on their modern stuff. Sad to say he wouldn't do it on his 250F but launched it on a 74 CR 250, I think every body at the track that day was like holy sh!t.

I did San Diego 1990.
Crashed every time I went out on the track, but the feeling out there was sweet too.
I'd love to see them come back, but dont think they will.
