I think there's too much pressure and James just can't hack it. It's like 05 when he had RC to deal with, he just can't do it..
The 6" between his ears. The more he thinks/rides like "I can't fall, I need to finish" the more he's focusing on falling not riding.
He needs a sports shrink. Badly.
[Unless he's just thinking to much about another Segway SX shoot at his compound.]
Perhaps we can all agree that he's one of the fastest riders ever to win the fewest titles and garner the most attention of all time?

P, I don't agree with you that James would gap the field now if he was motivated, etc. RV is going the same speed and is more consistent.
Also, I believe his JGR contract stipulates that he must ride outdoors. There is no choice for him to make regarding the nationals. So, we get to see him this summer. You guys can take it to the bank that I will be at Unadilla!

Saw him at budds when he went undefeated.
He wasn't the fastest on the planet, he was from another planet.
But P is wrong, it's not about the total wins.
Not to me anyway.
At that level, it's the titles.
One has to wonder about the lifestyle and mega distractions that stewart has going on, though. Multiple houses, TV show, fleet of exotic cars, etc all says diversion/distraction and not focus. He needs to offload all that crap and get serious again. He has his old age to dick around in...my .02

And despite everything, a 6 and an 8 are far better than a DNF or a 19 like we have seen in the past when he got bad starts and impaled himself trying to come through the pack (like when he landed on the back of JT$).
This is rust from not racing, IMO. Something he needs to think about this summer when it's time to decide if he wants to go outdoors or not.
Pit Row
He will still win races if he can get a good start, but when he gets a bad start and is in traffic his head just seems to short circuit and things go badly.

He was a little sick. He went out and set fastest lap in the first practice, and I think he really thought that would stick. I think he was trying to play a little mind game, claim he was so sick that he was sitting out 2nd practice, still have the fastest lap time, and come out of nowhere and smoke the main event. He didn't look anwhere near as sick as Dean Wilson did. I even admit that I was worried that was the case when the race started, until you see him making a million mistakes. After his first huck-a-buck through the whoops, I thought he was going to crash. I bet the majority of us did, even Stewart fans.
The only problem is when he hit the track in the main and went down again, while setting less than blistering lap times. He dropped under 53 seconds once, and had several 54s. I don't think he knows what is happening which makes it all the harder to fix. 17 points is huge, especially when you aren't even sniffing a win.
