Aparently, a ton of city folks have never seen a rototiller with a crumbler on it. Good grief. Now, if they could work a bunch of organic matter like wood chips, straw and peat in there, it would stay pretty loamy, and hold moisture better.

Nice little 6115 Deere though. Id say his pto shaft was not far off U joint bind when he has it all the way up. Not that they would recognize the sound either... lol Nice little Frontier tiller though.
Ha yea.. I have one for grooming my tracks out with, only thing i will say if you go over it more than once it turns into fine powder and the top layer of dirt dry's out like stink and turns into a dust bowl fast!

Trust me...if any of you have ridden Elsinore circa 2002-2009....it was blue groove or snot. Dirt looks good. I can't wait to go check it out. I'm stoked to have it back as a close option since El Cajon closed in 2006.

also they will find that creeping around with a roto-tiller every week is going to be a PITA and expensive. They need to take it from from us East coast riders & farmers... dump the tiller in favor of a good 7-shank cultivator and start mixing in some sawdust & mulch ASAP. A good cultivator behind that tractor could be pulled 3 times as fast and go twice as deep.

That east Texas red dirt is great for riding, but damn does it ever wreak havoc on white riding gear, boots, bikes, etc., etc. Gotta use Pro-Clean on everything after a day there.
I spent a lot of time at Swan with my '89-'92 YZ's and that soil was hell on those white plastics. I finally invested in a full set of plastics that were only used for riding Swan. Swan is a close second only to Cycle Ranch as far as best tracks in Texas IMO.

As for Elsinore, that tractor looks like a mini version of a real tractor and the only thing that tiller should be used for is mixing in organic matter to improve the native soil. They are going to be left with a very fine dust which will suck worse than blue groove.

I don't know much about soil maintenance but if they don't keep adding "something" to it to keep it bound together wouldn't the wind just erode the good stuff out over time. I am thinking Great Dust Bowl type stuff.

I think they aren't allowed to add anything to the dirt for environmental reasons, right?

The best thing they could add to that type of clay crap is washing fines from a gravel quarry. It's what gets washed off of crushed rocks-most quarries give it away for free. Works almost as well as sawdust or rice hulls at holding moisture, but doesn't blow away.

Can't add anything or can't add outside dirt? Seems I read os dirt. Surely they can add some organic matter that is not contaminated... Frickin leftist enviro rules...

Rode it a couple weeks ago , by 10:30 a.m it was a dusty as fuck and hard packed pretty much the whole track.

Unless they do something spectacular with that dirt & not just till it a little having a national there will be a disaster - I.M.O

Yep just tilling the top 4-6 inches is going to create silt over hardpack. If they keep it moist all the time it will be OK but still slick after a few hours especially in the ruts.

The best prep tool is something that till rip the soil/clay deep, not just turn the top layer into powder. After ripping deep the water will hold better too.

Really surprised that they are not allowed to introduce green waste into the track dirt. MX dirt is a lot like crop dirt.. the more organic matter you work in the better. They have farms in California, right?

the best thing i've seen, at least with our soil back here, is the attachment you showed, plus the one that has what looks like sprockets on the back to break up the clumps afterwards.

And of course water...

Hard packed and dusty?

For the record I have no problem with a hard packed track for the nationals, it would be a nice change of pace. Plus the new track layout looks fantastic and I like the "classy" touches such as the white fencing. But . . . moon dust is moon dust no matter how you till it. It will not hold moisture without some organic matter worked DEEP into the native soil. I say save your money and just call it what it is - a modern day Carlsbad. Embrace its uniqueness.

Lots of farms in California, but they're in the middle of the state, not SoCal.

If nothing else, threads like this create interest in the featured track, and could possibly include helpful prep tips for everyone.

Rode it yesterday with alot of friends and it was fun. It did get hard packed by the afternoon, but they do the best they can.

Roczen was out on the main, just flying. I mean literally! The guy took a huge tumble. Don't know how badly he got hurt, but he was holding his left arm. Bummer. I hope he is ok, he is one of my favs.

Another rider bashed through one of the white fences on the vet track. Ouch! Broke the middle strut.
