After watching the "Dark Side of Motocross" video in the other thread I was wondering if anyone else has had to bail mid air. A couple years ago when i was trying to go to Lorettas in the Schoolboy class i borrowed a friends 125. At the track i was racing after a pretty long straight there was a tabletop and the 125 decided the best place to seize would be on the face. I was in a full front flip and thought if I jumped I could run it out haha. All I got was a pretty good concussion which is better than possibly breaking my neck. Definitely could have been a lot worse.

I had a nice buck before a 20 foot table and was in full endo mode and thought i would be able to hold on and ride it out because it was a small jump. there was a split second where i told myself to bail but didn't do it. Wound up getting catapulted into the dirt and got a broken collarbone and a collapsed lung. worst thing that could have happened if i did bail was bent levers and a bar. Next time im in that situation i will definitely without a doubt, bail.

Did the same thing, except on a double. Landed straight on my ass, which was sore for a few days, but got out of it pretty good. Got lucky when I jumped over the bars I turned them, and that helped my bike miss me when it went cartwheeling. My buddy got it on video, and my family still has a laugh to this day of watching me run down the landing saying "I broke my ass!"

I had the throttle stick on my 500 back in 93'. It was right before a big double step down, and I had just shifted into 4th gear. I hit the take -off screaming wide open, front end was straight up in the air. I don't care what anyone says, there's no time to hit the kill button, and even if you did the bike would just keep dieseling anyway. Bailed at what I was told as about 30' high, ended up breaking my heal. Bent subframe, wasted bars and silencer, duck-bill rear fender, and my foot hurts alot most of the time. Luckily it was a sand track or I have no doubt I'd be in a wheelchair.

Broke a femur from bailing mid-air at De Anza 20 years ago.
I still regret that move all the time.

I bailed on about a 20 foot double on my pitbike 4 years ago. The throttle got stuck going up the face and I knew I was going to over jump it by a good 10 feet and land in some trees. I ejected off the face and flew a good 15 feet through the air, luckily I landed on a pile of trash bags full of leaves lol.

I had been riding a 450 for weeks before that... I forgot how quick the small bikes run outta gas.

Lesson learned, ALWAYS check your gas before a moto sess.

Landing on a steep slope in a vertical position sure helped this "for instance" from being a leg(s) breaker!

The first thing I think of having to do with this is Pichon in like 95 or so. Biggest air bail I'd ever seen up until the Chadapult.

last time was in 05, a table, kinda wet, lost traction up the face, got back in it, hooked up too good (250 t), front way high, slid off the back. landed on my knees, soft tissue and ligament damage. all good though.

At the Ranburn Alabama mx the flag man watered down that blind finish line jump. I came off that jump so sideways I was headed for the spectors lined up on the snow fence so I bailed. No spectors were hurt. Me and the machine were bent and scratch

Scrubbed a step-down, got bunged up on the face similar to Alessi at round 1 this year. Tried to bail over the front of the bars, caught my feet. Woke up with a torn meniscus.

I have had a couple "Oh shit.....I must bail moments"! came out of them ok , with bumps and bruises.

You guys KNOW one of the worst ones ever! In fact in the mid-late 80's....it was in just about every moto X preview ever shown. The Chuck Sun jump ( this is why they named it after him ) at washougal , when his throttle pinned wide open on a factory CR500! He launched a good 150' down the back side of that jump , tried to land on his feet and broke a lot of bones that day. It's was a very ugle and scary thing to see. In fact....that was my very first washougal national....1980. I've only missed 3 since then. A lot of great memories up there......but that aint one of them!

A SX in Perth in 91 i was coming up short on a triple and bailed, walked away, although my ankles have never been the same since.

A mate came up short on the same triple on the same night, tried to ride it out and broke both wrists.

Last year my yz125 ran out of fuel on the face of a 3rd gear pinned peaky double. It threw me front flippin. Got lucky and was only knocked out, cracked a rib and had bone bruise on the knee cap, which hurt like shit. I had knee guards, but they slipped down just enough to catch a bar or something. My bud said I kept askin if I was riding fast and that I wanted to know where I was lmao. That was on a thursday practice and I raced the next two weekends straight to wrap up a big ass plastic trophy! ha

Back in 06 when I was riding 85's we had a private track in Woodland with some decent jumps. Had two table tops back to back, like the ones on the OHV track (or whatever they call it) at Hollister just a little bigger. First table had a kicker in the lip that I had clearly seen and pointed out to my Pops to come over and fix it with the tractor. His exact words " Everyone else is jumping it fine, just do it"..... 10 minutes later I'm ejecting over the bars mid air and the next thing I remember is waking up laying on the floor of our MX trailer asking what happened and whats going on. Thanks for the memories pops...... and concussion.

I've air-bailed just a time or two. I try as hard as I can to ride it to the ground, just to have something between me and the ground to soften the impact.

Threw the bike away over the holy Schmidt jump at spring creek. Landed near the bottom of the downside feet first. That one left me with a clip and two screws in my ankle. That track and I are still not on speaking terms.

I stepped off one on the face of a triple 1 time something kicked and it was looping hard. I just stepped on the seat and kicked off. I landed on the actual landing on my butt. My left cheek was bruised for a couple weeks and was visible swollen for months. Nothing broke though.

ahh, ive had two of the thought patterns of "DAMN SHOULD I JUMP OFF?"

one was at milestone fairly recently on the main track, i overjumped the first double up front and lost all my momentum for the second one..but commited anyway and i new i was coming up way short.. i for like 2 miliseconds thought about bailing..i didnt and stayed on and just ended up with a bruised ballsack... my buddie saw the whole thing and was like, "im glad you didnt bail, you would have got effed up lol"

The other time was at the old lake elsinore on the vet track, when they first put in the double-double-double section that was giving guys fits lol...well i jumped the first one and landed and turned right on the face of the second jump and jumped off the side of the track full boner/nose wheelie air (super gooned out)..thought about bailing but stayed on once again...and did a vicious slap down!..that shit hurt and my heart was in my throat to say the least lol.

I have never intentionally bailed (knock on wood).

I've bailed once, can't remember it though. Ended up with a broken femur out of it.

It wasnt a bail but still a funny story. i was at racetown, on the vet track, and i hit a jump and ended complete boner air status but held on for dear life. the bike ended up landing on 2 wheels and dragged me a good 20 feet while i was in a complete super man form getting my nuts shredded by the back tire. LOL. the flagger must of got a good laugh out of that one. gotta love those beginner/goon moments..
