Davey can you give us an update?

As for the rest of us speculators,

I would assume Barber is out because they now have the Indycar series and center their whole year around that.

Monster Mountain near Montgomery looks to be one of the best.

Kevin Kelly, whatcha got?

Aonia Pass or Durhamtown Plantation, both near Washington, GA. Durhamtown has enough parking for 50,000 people.

Bring the old Road Atlanta Trans-AMA race track back. In Braselton, GA.

And lastly, if looking for a new track area - Lumpkin County and Dawson County. 45 mins from ATL. 1 hour from the ATL airport. Lots of hilly terrain. In Dawson County they are building the Atlanta Motosports Park (AMP) http://www.atlantamotorsportspark.net/ on some land that the Elliotts sold. As in BILL Elliott, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville?

Kiwisonfire, I've been to Durhamtown and love the place but where does it have parking for 50,000 people, just asking? Also, what would they do, link the mx1, mx2 and Bomber track all together to make a national type track? Driving in and out of there would be a nightmare but I've been to RedBud and they only have one road from either side in and out also.

It definately has a good central southeast location and proximity to Atlanta is good. Plus its on about 5000 acres of land.

Ramrod, sorry i was exaggerating a little bit with my numbers there, but what i was implying was exactly what you said, that Durhamtown has TONS of acreage. As far as the driving thing goes, Budds Creek and Millville are the Nationals I attend each year and they both have relatively shitty setups as far as getting to them, but if you get there at 7 AM like I do then it's not really a problem. Barber has the best setup for driving, its less than a mile from interstate 20. Looks like Monster Mountain is close to the Interstate 85 too.

I am familiar with Durhamtown. I personally don't see it having enough parking for a national. Its an 8000 acre facility but trails and tracks and other things litter it. I think the location is good. However they have a BIG problem with pulling people over in Union Point. AT a national you have to be ready for 15,000+ people. i personally don't see them being able to accommodate that. As far as traffic, if they had cooperation from local, county and state police they could make it happen. The facility is great for 2-3k max but anything over that is pushing it.

How about Gatorback? Convert it back to the 97 layout. Would be epic.

Durhamtown is horrible!!! I don't think any self respecting pro rider would be caught there.

Monster Mountain looks great!!! I might need to take a trip down there this spring.

I would love a national within driving distance of ATL.

Aonia would be a great pick - lots of room to build that national caliber track. Access the track easily from both directions, no windy 1.5 lane roads getting there - About 30 min from Athens,GA and 20 min from I -20 in the other direction. Perry the owner has great cooperation with the local Washington,GA community and he has a good relationship with the Coombs.
Athens, GA would welcome spectators and spectators would have a blast in Athens - you are also only about 45 min from Augusta,GA . Plenty of hotel rooms within 30 min or less - and a lake to cool off in close by!

I have a feeling they are getting close to a decision - Coombs, Cotter and company were spotted again at the Atlanta airport this week - hopefully they will have some news soon. Till then we can all speculate away......

I'm glad somebody made that point about D Town so that I didn't have to.

Why do you say that about Durhamtown? Too smooth? Too many atv's?

It's not Monster Mountain but it has some potential I think. But it would be a long way off to be compared to a national track.

The Bomber track at D-town is really a nice track, and, they have actually been keeping up on maintaining it so it develops deep ruts and is really a departure from what you normally see there. Not quite there for a national, but it is nice. If you haven't checked it out because of the condition of the other tracks, you are missing out. I heard Mark Barnett was out at D-Town last weekend planning a layout for a new "national caliber track" in an as yet undeveloped area of the property. Kind of makes you wonder....

I used to race Aonia, and compared to other national tracks I've raced on, I really don't think it's there. I guess if you rework everything, but it still wouldn't have good spectator access for a national size crowd. Nothing against the track, I used to practice and race there all the time and I liked it just fine.

Monster Mountain looks like it could be whipped into a National caliber track, I would rather see Gatorback return though. So many memories.....

Cool, appreciate that. Maybe I'll have to go out there and check it out again. The impression that I have had was not that great.

I wouldn't call millcreek dead center between b'ham and Atlanta. It's much closer to b'ham but it's also only about 2 miles from the interstate whereas Monster Mountain is at least 12-15 miles from the interstate. Either would be great for me.

As far as Monster Mountain I just don't know where you would but the potential 20k+ people. They have that one section where people always park and that section up over there on top of thehill buy the stairway jump (whatever it's called now) but other than that lots of the track is lined would woods and such. The only other national track I've been to is Red Bud and the infield area makes it a viewing dream. MM has an accessible infield but it is not developed like Red Bud.

Don't get me wrong though, I pray they bring it to Monster Mountain as it's less than an hours drive for me. Any national in the south will be attented by me and that's a guaranteed fact!! Bring it on.

My Avatar is a picture of my clavicle that was broken at Durhamtown. The MX2 track was fun but its like riding on concrete. They want to charge a lot to ride tracks that are never taken care of. Its dangerous and I wont ever go back. If you want to ride a fun track go to AMP MX just on the Alabama border on I-20.

I hear you Doc. I just think with some ripping up and water the tracks could be more core mx but they are catering to a wider audience so the way they have it is ok I guess.

Monster Mountain has a badass name and should be rewarded a national based on that logic alone.

I agree - the current track at Aonia is not capable of supporting a national level track. But they do have plenty of land to ADD a national level track and it has been discussed and noted track builders have been out there looking at the possibilities. They also have a lot of level parking along with a plethora of hook ups already in place.

I was at two places in Macon on Tuesday -- Paradise Park and the small track at the end of the drag strip where Vurb did their deal recently. On Wednesday I was out at Durhamtown. It's an interesting place to say the least but I think it's a bit off the beaten path for a pro national, though I would love to just go ride there for a couple of days. But there is another spot outside of Atlanta to the east that looks promising...

In a couple of weeks I am headed back down to Monster Mountain, as well as Barber (fifth time) and then down near Tallahassee. A lot of people are looking, gang, but the right track and the right facility and the right interest in having a motocross track of that size have yet to all come together.

Small bonus: Athens, GA, is my new favorite college town besides the one I live in!

I'm assuming that a big part of being looked at as a serious option is having a huge amount of capitol available for facility modification?

Matt's old track in Grayson? Didn't that get shut down over noise complaints?
