7 years has passed since James has raced the 450/SX class.
The G in Gibbs is the 7th letter in the alphabet.
Suzuki's is 7 letters
It's all adding up now. Smile

I also bet James will need to win 7 races & get 7 other podium finishes to win the 2012 SX title. Wink

Reed didn't prepare anywhere near what he should have in the 2009 offeason. Coming into 2010 he thought it was going to be him and Bubba, no sweat....suddenly broken hand. People forget, he was in Australia for a good portion of the offseason that year and didn't come to America to test until mere weeks before A1. He still thought he was going to come back into the SX series and show the young wannabe's the ropes, only to realize upon entering that they were for real. He won the fiirst national on that "crap" bike, was doing good in the 2nd race and went to shit from there. Blame the bike all you want, his comments before Hangtown were that it was the best outdoor setup he ever rode on. He was gelling fine with the Kawi, but enter a spanking by Dungey and suddenly it sucks? What happened to Reed is exactly where James is when his bikes "suck". The bike is great against lesser competition, but enter someone pushing the pace and it becomes THE reason the pace can't be upped to match them. A bike can make a difference, such as RV on the 2011 vs. 2012, but blaming the bike for shit results is a complete cop out.

People forget, these guys ride the bikes before signing. They don't blindly go in and sign, and then see if they like the bike. Reed had ridden the Kawasaki plenty before deciding if it would work for him, and signing the contract. Somehow the bike turned into a pile after that?

They sign these deals with the intent that they can fine tune the bike and make it work for them. Whether it's the bike, the set up on the bike, or not having the ability to come to an understanding with those who are working together to get the bike set up to the riders liking. It's doesn't always work out., and that's not to say that it wouldn't work out for the next guy.

As hard as these guys push , they have to have 100% confidence in their equipment. Keep in mind, James isn't as good test rider, as say Reed, or Dungey and that make things even more complicated..

JS7 is a phenominal rider, however his desire to "dominate" and not just get the victory is his biggest enemy. If I could get a dollar for everytime I've heard him say in an interview "I just want to go out and dominate" I could fill my truck up. Last year in SX he was riding over his head trying to do just that. He's in unchartered territory.....the pace he's trying to run to destroy the field is dangerous for himself and for others. Like someone said earlier, the youngsters have studied MC, RC, and JS. I really believe he underestamated the field last year and after A2 struggled with the fact that he wasn't winning by a wide margin. Prime example was Vegas. He was running out front thinking he was going to checkout...then all of a sudden KW started following Stewarts lines etc and hanging with him. JS kept pushing and pushing trying to gap instead of maintaining....and we all know what happend next. Will he be better on the Suzuki? That depends on whether he can accept victory by a small margin.

Enough already, you're right. Once the paychecks stop coming and the contract is over, they all should bad-mouth their old bikes that they couldn't win on. Makes sense to me. Hey, that's why I never won a national title too! Hey, I think I like this thought process!

Look at Reed on the Kawi last year. NEVER a contender whatsover! Look at him the year before on the Suzuki, and look at him this year on the Honda. Reed himself has said he didn't like the Kawi. Not sure why it's such a hard concept for you to grasp, but it happens.

Same thing happened to Hurricane Hannah in his career. Don't remember which bikes, but it happened.

Same with McGrath and his Suzuki. And actually, his 97 Honda. He wasn't crazy about the new aluminum frame either. Mcgrath dominated on the Honda, suffered on the Suzuki, and dominated on the Yamaha.

Learn some MX history.
Not quite right on the mc thing. He had 1 week on the suzuki before the season started at A1. Lamson(on honda, mc's ex-team) took him out twice in the first round. THen mc had a terribly badly dented pipe in another, which took his probable win away, and then he also had a rear flat at another round, taking yet again another probable win away. If one of those 4 incidents didn't happen, he would have been champ that year, on only 1 week of time before season started. The suzuki was a winner with him on it.

Riders make mistakes when they are giving it a little to much. That's James though, he's gonna go as fast as possible even if he has to ride out of control. Fun to watch for sure though, not good for winning championships.

MC still almost won on the Suzuki, with barely any preparation before A1. He suffered a flat tire in one race to boot! He blames lack of preparation opposed to the bike (in public anyway).

Reed was most certainly a contender on the Kawasaki, winning the Hangtown overall and getting a solid 2nd overall at round 2, being the points leader heading into round 3. There he went south fast.

Certainly many bikes of yesteryear had vast levels of effectiveness, and Hannah has thrown forks off of cliffs to display his displeasure. I thought the comments here regarded to guys of today such as James and Reed.

In McGrath's book he described the suzuki as getting awesome starts because it didn't make enough power to spin the rear wheel! Also, doesn't anyone remember all the clutch problems he had on it due to abusing it so badly to make the bike perform?

I really think it was him having good results in spite of the bike. I'm definitely not a pro, but I have ridden friends' bikes and realized no matter how much seat time I might have, there's no just no way I could get used their bikes.

I say I hope James comes back healthy, keeps a cool head and keeps it that way through the entire series.

Maybe, but it still doesn't make sense to me. He could get good equipment without JGR and I'm sure that Big James does more worrying about how much is coming in and how much is going out. Besides, even if he did sign with JGR his "problems and issues" wouldn't go away, you know that.

Maybe they got in over their heads, but it doesn't make sense for a guy to buy a team and less than a year later sign with another team. If it happens I think that it would have to be some kind of joint venture. There is no way that James is going to move to Charlotte and have to start "following orders." That's just MHO.

Hey P,

I'm thinking that once all of this gets sorted out, things will come to light about the whole L & M team. I hear that the "James buying into or buying the entire team" will prove to be false. I think it is more like James being on a team that fell apart, and the rider having the resources (Red Bull) to keep the team going to continue to race. So if that is in fact true, why would he continue funding the team when he could just do what he does best.....just ride.

Hopefully James will give a candid interview after the fact that will lay it all out.

Unless I'm mistaken, McGrath would have won the sx championship on the Suzuki if it weren't for a flat tire at one of the rounds.

I feel the same way. I think the team was going under and he picked up the slack to get them through the rest of the sx season. And if thats "buying" the team then thats what he had to do. Which maybe one reason why homeboy on his team rode the nats for another team. I just think he was stuck in a position where he had to pony up some money for the remainder of the season and keep them afloat until a new deal was worked out. And if it wasn't we, which I don't think it was, will see that come A1.

James shouldn't be blamed for that team going under nor should he be hammered on for changing brands or teams if he so chooses.

I hope its all figured out and he comes out swinging at the first round.

He nearly had it! People forget that fact. Just like they thought Reed sucked outdoors. When in fact Reed killed the competition excluding Carmichael.

The other thing here is that usually most don't include the 125 SX titles on the riders' # of titles list. It is generally regarded that RC has 15 titles, that doesn't include his 125 SX. Most say that James has 5 titles right now, RV has 5 etc.

Sometimes James has like 9 titles when his World SX and US Open titles are included as well. With creative recognition we could probably get RC another 5 titles to up his total to 20.

I wasn't pointing out that he almost won on the Suzuki, I am going by what he said in his book. He HATED the Suzuki. He didn't get a decent finish on it until he took the suspension off of one of his Honda practice bikes and put it on the Suzuki and then won the next round.

Despite any success he had or almost had, he didn't like the bike, was never comfortable on the bike, and hated it so much so, that he quit training during the Nationals. The success he DID have on it was on his skill alone. Just goes to prove how much ahead he was on everyone at that time. Hated the bike, never felt comfortable, and still would have won the SX title if he hadn't had a slew of bad luck.

This year will be very trying on him. Two former champs, RV and RD will be on the gate.

One former and one current. *fix'd

However, a SX season is always trying no matter who you are or how much you've won. If you are expected to win and aren't you have pressure. If you are winning, you are expected to keep winning and that creates pressure. Not to mention that everyone is gunning for you pressure.

When you're a top guy in SX, it's never easy.

mcgrath, flat tire in 97 in charlotte cost him the title. a punk kid on a yz250 won that race, he was a 125 west coast regular, just riding a 250 in his off week. his name was windham.

forgot to mention the conventional fork debacle that year as well. about round 3 or so he was running upside downs from 95. laraocco stuck with the conventionals, but ran this massive billet lower triple clamp/brace.

you know the real reason i think he went to suzuki that year? the bike was a 1995 CR250 clone. the radiator shrouds, pipe and silencer from a 95 cr250 bolted right to the bike. that was when suzuki FINALLY ditched the case reed motor. interesting to note, from 93-96, mcgrath rode a 93 chassis on honda. won the 96 title on a 4 year old frame design.

This is from RacerX, which usually makes sure its sources are solid. Racerhead had this to say:

"Want some silly season news? Okay, then, let’s hit it up.

- James Stewart to JGR seems like it’s chugging along nicely and should get done. And it should be on Suzukis as well, with Stewart doing a full season of supercross and motocross."

I wouldn't say it's a done deal but it likely will come together. If he does race outdoors, it will be a series for the ages if all the top guys are healthy. I will seriously go to ever national.

Jan 7th
7 years has passed since James has raced the 450/SX class.
The G in Gibbs is the 7th letter in the alphabet.
Suzuki's is 7 letters
It's all adding up now. Smile

I also bet James will need to win 7 races & get 7 other podium finishes to win the 2012 SX title. Wink
But I remember when james first moved up to 250's he said "his whole life is all about JANUARY 8TH!
