TBteam, do you remember when our mutual close friends David Bailey and Art Eckman didn't realize that Sebastien Tortelli won the Los Angeles SX? We had to go back and re-tape the last five minutes of the race and do a fake race call.
Stuff happens. You know, like a hurricane.

We had that problem all day. The first 250 moto, we didn't have a monitor for a good 10 minutes early in the race and you probably didn't notice. Again, we just kept it vague.
C'mon Edwards, do you really think we were watching the race start, and had people in our ear telling us the race had started, and for some reason we just decided not to say it?
What a shitty thing to say. A mud race that (I think) was before live timing and scoring? No disrespect to anyone who's come after them, but Bailey and Eckman were the best ever. My son and I still watch nationals from '01 just because the commentary was so good. At Budds Creek after a big RC crash on the first lap and an epic charge through the field, near the end of the race, "He still thinks he can win the moto." At Kenworthy's, talking about RCs stomach ailment, "Carmichael is the kind of guy who doesn't have time for problems during the race. He'll deal with problems after the race. He's like that tough guy in that movie that said, 'I ain't got time to bleed'. Carmichael is that kind of rider." At Steel City, "Everyone gets a gift today. Carmichael gets a gift, Brown gets a gift, Langston gets - nothing."
And, by the way, I wasn't complaining about it. I just related it to times when I've been watching races, saw a race start and then realized that was my class. Stuff happens.
I didn't see the second moto until it was on speed, and at that point was just happy that i still had power with a hurricane in the area. But let's bitch anyway and be petty about it.
Art Eckman and David Bailey were the gold standard of American motocross television, and I was extremely lucky to get to work with them for several years, but even they made mistakes, which was the point of my comment. It was bad weather in Los Angeles that night too. Things can and will go sideways when you're trying to cover an open-air motocross race in a rainstorm.

I don't know what's going on with this sport these days - so much insider intrigue, dividing up a damn small pie into tiny slivers that aren't enough for anyone, alliances and enemies - Good lord, it's a niche sport that only appeals to a very small fraction of the population. Nobody should care about these little things. I wish the Lords of Motocross realized they were really big frogs in a really small (and rapidly shrinking) pond and stop with all the behind-the-scenes baloney.
I mentioned our bad night in Los Angeles as a case in point. You have turned it into an imaginary back-hand slap at my old broadcasting partners. I am defending the two guys who are getting blasted today for something that was out of their control.

Sheesh, this is the benchmark incident for all that's wrong in the sport? it was a glitch. A lot of people were busting their asses to get a race on while half the east coast was barking about when the storm was going to hit. Let's swing another hard one at their nuts.
People would gut Eckman on the internet if he was still announcing.

Chock this one up to Murphey's law.
And if the race were today, it would have been canceled. The whole Southwick crew did a kick-ass job and getting that race in rather than pulling the plug. And there was an amazing amount of fans that came out in a weather advisory to enjoy it. Southwick and its fans are core motocross!

Did everybody manage to get out of town without any major issues? That is what I was concerned about most.
The production team did a good job, all things considered.
