I actually cannot upgrade to 11 because my hardware is too old. Plus, Win 11 forces you into creating a Windows account and handing your computer over to them. Support ended a few days ago but you can get security updates for another year.
I am looking at buying a new desktop but I really don't want Win 11. I'm checking on a local guy who installed my SSD a couple years ago and I will see if he can build me a new comp with Win 10. He can also set it up so I don't have to create a Windows account or login to anything which I prefer.

Only problem I’ve had with Windows 11 is that my U.S. laptop, which doesn’t get used for eight months through the summer, downloaded tons of updates when I returned and fired it up. All good, but apparently it didn’t update the wireless driver (which may be third party software). The new windows updates didn’t support the old wireless driver and so it dumped the wireless connection.
And I couldn’t then update the wireless driver because I couldn’t connect to the internet (I don’t have a cable to hard wire it).
Then I screwed it up even more while trying to diagnose and fix the problem myself while not really knowing what I was doing.
Anyway, I took it to Best Buy and they fixed it while I waited. And charged me $0! Big thumbs up for Best Buy!
Other than that, Windows 11 is fine. My docs are cloud-stored so I can access them from anywhere and they’re always backed up automatically.
I just went to my local guy and ordered a new comp. Win 11 pro. core i7, 1 TB drive. He will set it up with all my existing software installed and operational. No Microsoft account and no login.$1050.00.
My biggest dread was having to install all of my software and data. I should have it next week and I will issue follow up reports.
Linux will work on your current computer, the most popular distributions are Ubuntu and Debian, they are both free, Ubuntu is easier to install for Windows users.
You can run your current software on Linux using Wine, or you could use many of the free software packages available for Linux.

I bought my son an Alienware for Christmas. Im not very good with computers so I took it to.my old boss to set it up and he had a way to bypass the windows account and still get the computer going .
I read that you can bypass the Microsoft acct by creating a "local" acct. We have 1 computer that runs the windows 11 that you have to log into MS acct. Every time you turn on the computer. I hate it! We do have to buy a new computer for the Solid Works. It was OK several years back but as SW gets more hungry every year, we need a more powerful computer too.
Hell, I'm still just running X on windows 98.
You are probably doing a helluva lot more complex stuff than me, but it's nice to be able to just cruise along.
If I had a choice, I'd still have all the computers running 98 or XP. But that just won't fly. New operating systems, new phone, like getting teeth pulled! Resist at all costs.

I had a licensed seat of 7, I think it was, and because of connections that I won't go into, I aquired a "dongle free" copy of X.
I'm just running it for a 3 axis router, so it's more than I need.
I just hate it when you know where everything is and can fly around then they roll out a "New and Improved" version, and they move or change icons. Like seriously, WTF?
I can't imagine what the most current version is like, but when X had that line fix feature, it changed my life. I used to get dxf or Autocad conversions that it wouldn't complete a toolpath for a conflict. Well, somewhere there was a microscopic loop in a line. Freaking infuriating.

What router are you running? Commercial or hobby grade? And what are you making? Inquiring minds want to know.
FYI, I know exactly what you're talking about on the small arcs. Running the waterjet, your tool (the stream) is about .030" Dia. So those little arcs are really small. What typically happens is you try and run text for a customer and they think it's real easy to type in text .25"-.375" tall. So now you scale a letter down that size that is really made up of maybe a thousand short entities. You set your offset to half the tool .015" which in many instances is a bigger distance than the entity is long and the software gets confused (my terminology) and makes circles around the entity, or it has to make the entity longer to decide which way to move next and creates a tiny circle to transition to maintain it's offset. 🤯🤯🤯

Unfortunately if you want security updates, eventually you will need to update to latest versions of windows.

A 5'X10' Multicam. Mostly cutting plastic sheet into whatever the customer wants. Signs, boat parts, machine parts, etc.
Used to do a bunch of vacuum form tooling, but with all the new techniques in injection molding getting cheaper, vacuum forming is tapering way off.

That thing is actually a .060" styrene vacuum formed part.

I really loathe all this computer update crap.The only time I get on my desktop is maybe once a month to pay bills.
It's an older desktop that a friend updated to windows 10 about 18 mo ago. He did say my computer was slow and did not have much memory.
I guess I should get on the computer and do an update. Do I do a search for it or will it just come up?
If you have a registered copy of 10, it will load updates automatically. You have some discretion over when they are installed. You can disable the updates but I have never really had any issues and windows defender seems to keep my computer fairly safe. No issues in 10 or 15 years. The number 1 rule: don't open links that you are not positively sure are OK. Especially in your e-mail. I don't know if the extended updates effect the program itself, but I think it's just security updates.

I have to call it that because my buddy corrected me when I used a different name.😁Although we have cut wood and light aluminum projects. We almost bought a 6X12 multicam machine 20 years ago. What a blessing we didn't get the contract. A company that we did flooring work for was supposed to get the contract for the local hospital. They wanted us to pre cut all the laminate flooring so all the seams would be perfect. So I spent a day up at MultiCam creating samples. Told them the machine was $100K plus. Their answer, "add it in the bid". Due to the size of the order, we would have had to rent another comericial building due to the volume going in and out every day. Of course there was a lead time you had to order the machine in advance. We were just about to order the machine and there were rumors that the project would have to be rebid because of the vast differences in price. Yikes! Do Not order machine. At that time we were thinking of walking. Then, as it got closer as the building was still being worked on and still no actual contract, then came the delays. We decided to bail, which saved our bacon. The hospital got delayed enough we would have been paying rent plus machine payments with no income. We would have died before we even started.

On MasterCam X. Earlier I kept saying Solidworks. Freudian slip as they are the same company. X was released in 2005, and I never even looked at any newer versions. Does every thing we need.

OK. You were saying X in an earlier post and I didn't know what that was. I do know what Mastercam is. MultiCam makes a nice machine.

CNC routers are the coolest tool. I know the software side seems daunting to a beginner, but at least with consumer grade stuff, pretty much anyone can get started with an hour of Onshape videos on Youtube to design a basic part, and then something like Sheetcam is super beginner friendly for creating a toolpath.
Some people get pretty nutty making parts that normally consumer grade machine have no business being able to make....

This is the case. I have Windows 11 on my computer. I added my name to the "profile," but not any Microsoft account. The only hiccup is that Windows will occasionally bring up a dialog that says something like "Hey, let's finish getting you set up! Get the most out of Windows," etc., yada yada yada. I always click "later," and it's been 2 years since I bought the computer.
Why are my ears ringing?
