The TV production crew brings A LOT of heat on themselves, but one thing I think they absolutely hit out of the park this year was the drone shots - especially at Ironman. Whoever the pilot is, he/she deserves a raise. They did some really shit hot flying this year.
The drone shots last year were way too close to the track and riders most of the time, I think that was the biggest positive change this season, awesome addition. Specially that moment when they showed the replay of Sexton bumping into Jett at Unadilla from another angle, that was great. Hope they keep it that way.
Chris is a NorCal local. He was a former local motocross pro turned drone racer who decided to try using drones to video racing. He found a market and perfected it in the last couple of years as a vendor at our local races. I miss seeing him and his dad at the races this summer but couldn't be happier for the opportunity that was given to him to be able to do what he does on a national stage.

Agree on the Drone coverage….awesome! …
Yup, incredible footage!!!! Kudos to the team!
The Shop
Chris budd was FAST back in the day. Sac Raceway, Marysville, I mean a top notch dude that absolutely could have been on a team if he had stuck with it. He told me he didn’t have the money to continue on.
I wonder what ever happened to the bootleg drone guy from a couple years ago? The one that brought his own drone and was flying it basically head level right next to the riders as they were racing. I thought I remember there being some sort of legal action being taken.
he has been silent on his instagram since the incident. what appears to be his wife or girlfriend still comments on it. its either her or himself on her account. whichever one it is theyre a piece of shit. a guy in a chair asked for an update on the situation after a year to which they replied "a year later did you finally walk"
Yea I was thinking to myself yesterday while watching that the drone shots are freakin awesome!
I really like drone footage as long as it isn’t showing footage from really far away.
Overhead sure does show how riders can get closer in some sections and line choices.
What kind of drone is it?....like a $1000.00 dollar one or more?..it is a cool perspective..
When the drone coverage first started, it was garbage. But I knew it would get better and it certainly has! It provides a great perspective and the quality has been great.
Though my fave is still the RAW stuff Tom shoots.
I really like the drone coverage. You can sometimes even see shadows of the drone on the ground.
The first time I saw drones flying at Fox Raceway (I was there), I thought it was a fan doing it, and I was pissed that someone would put the riders in danger like that.
Then I saw it on the broadcast and realized it was a pro.
They were flying super close to the riders that day. At one point it flew under the finish line banner. I believe that was the first national where it was used, so probably just figuring things out.
The footage seems to be getting better and better. At this point, I can't imagine not having it.
I believe the one you first saw was a fan flying his own and he's been banned from attending any MX races due to his actions with his drone. I can't find the thread on it but as posted earlier, apparently the footage still lives on Instagram but I don't remember what his name was.
More drones, great. Less Will even better. No if we could only get rid of the THOR battle box and have a normal split screen where we could actually see the racing we would be on our way.
The drones shots are awesome! Really shows how gnarly the tracks are and the variation of the lines. Really awesome shots!!
Drone coverage was simply fantastic this year. Can't say enough good things about that coverage. Major props to the drone jockey and the production crew.
I was wondering if the shadow sometimes get noticed by the rider?
The FPV footage was fantastic. Hopefully next year they can figure out how to reduce video compression from the drone’s feed to more closely match the cameras on the ground.
Pit Row
Drones good! Filthy Phil Dong Cam...bad.
The drones have been flown much better this year, but I wish they'd pump the brakes a bit.
They felt extremely overused and were constantly used in the horrible split screen configuration where we got to watch two separate sets of ants at the same time. It is impossible to tell who is who, and you'd have Weege calling out different riders from the same team because even he's getting the battles mixed up.
Drones rock... I agree, the pilot this season was highly skilled. I wish I could fly like that. I had to buy an autonomous one to make me look good.
It gave Ricky wood...
