Hey I recently went to regionals where they have outlawed pit bikes for “ insurance reasons”. I am recovering from a stroke and riding my Suron is the only way I can get to the stating line. They ask me to display my handicap permit on my number plate. All was well until I got to my next race and was informed under no circumstances would I be permitted to ride my Suron.
Now what can I do? Are there any ADA laws to help me? Gotta be there for my sons!
Golf cart maybe ? You were warned in advance so you need to make other arrangements and leave the suron at home.
Why do you need to be on the starting line?
I think people would take you more serious if you were on a mobility scooter (which is what it sounds like you need if you are truly handicapped).
The Shop
This has been a hot topic in a lot of the local races around me, banning them completely because its hard to regulate and these track owners dont have time or man power to do it. Difference between using your pit bike to go back and forth in the pits and putting your kid on his Stacyc to ride for the whole day so hes out of your hair while your racing.
Some people get on my nerves with the pit bike shit anyways, riding your pit bike from your truck 50 yards to the sign up tent is ridiculous.
More local tracks have been going to golf carts only 16+. Anything with a twist throttle is not allowed as a pit vehicle. Pedal assist ebikes and bicycles are fine.
One track I frequent is no one under +18 years old and the other one is none at all. The ol' insurance isn't a fan of them I was told. It's fine with me. The wild pack of unsupervised children that would roam causing chaos and injury the night before race day is no longer. It's nice and "quiet" with the hum of the generators.
The pit bikes are completely out of control anymore. Pits are more dangerous than the track. Someone above said it best. Parents not doing their damned job. Stick the kid on it and buh bye. A lot of our local tracks are cracking down on them. To be honest surons are arguably worse. Can’t hear them coming lol. I’m fine with pedal bikes only anymore. Great way to warm up the legs.
Exactly, not even to mention insurance at these places is very specific and is not forgiving to any sort of negligence on behalf of the track owners.
The track is one thing to keep safe and remove any sort of negligence out of. As soon as we have kids (and adults) flying through the parking lots and pits that now opens up the whole parking lot for the same kind of scrutiny.
Think about all the fences, gates, heavy equipment, ponds, etc that are at these facilities, they are building the tracks to be safe to race on, not the parking lots.
Worst offenders are usually the 6 year olds hauling ass on their KTMs
Pitbikes were banned at Lorettas so I assumed it would trickle down. It’s mostly kids I see racing around the pits, typically with no helmets on. Bummer the acts of few hurt everyone. I wonder if they would allow a smaller ATV given your circumstances..? 🤔
Definitely sue the track/promoter. That'll work out great.
Surons have become the scourge of the pits and neighborhoods, every little kid thinks they are wheelie boys roving in packs thinking they are cool! Most cities and states are moving to require licensing with insurance on the vehicle and for the rider as hospitals and holes at cemeteries have been increasing … those things are essentially motorcycles and they rip around weaving in and out of traffic, it’s nuts!
surons are all over now and in my area lots of teens and pre-teens flying down major streets and roadways whiping in and out of traffic
accident waiting to happen and of course the person who hits one of them will spend countless dollars and hours defending themselves
Pit riding if any kind is completely out of control at some of the tracks in my district to the point that I don’t think I’ll be supporting them any longer. E-bikes, pit bikes, stacycs, 4 wheelers, kids riding their race bikes, mini jeeps, and lots of HOVER BOARDS! It’s a complete free for all and not an atmosphere that I enjoy. They ride back and forth all damn day with absolutely no destination or parenting. It’s only a matter of time until someone is seriously injured. I was driving my van out of the pits this weekend when a kid no older than 8 or 9 passed me on his hover board and cut right in front of my van only to dead stop and cut back the other direction toward my van when he must have realized he missed his turn. I’ve had enough.
Apparently, None of you guys ran from the cops as a kid—-on a bonanza hardtail…. Neighbors stayed pissed at all of us with minis. We all turned out okay—well, mostly. 😎
I almost ran over an E Bike last week, did not expect to be getting passed at 45
mph by someone in the bicycle lane. Ran him right off the road.....OOPS!
It's a whole different thing now and it is way out of hand at some tracks!
Pit Row
It blows my mind at all the practice tracks that they let everyone ride pitbikes without helmets. Yeah it's a pitbike but you can still get fucked up
100% will put you in a hospital with a TBI. Ask me how I know… not at the track though, horsing around in the neighborhood.
Not sure how it is for you guys but over here (UK) they're the transport of choice for the junior criminal classes- unregistered, so untraceable, riders are balaclaved up so can't be identified, can go pretty much anywhere, and the cops aren't allowed to pursue anyone on a bike who's not wearing a helmet. Ideal getaway vehicle.
Kinda what I was thinking...
Time for bed grandpa
I personally will use a pit bike to get around at some of our larger local tracks but was not happy when a teenager hit the front end of my truck with theirs...
At our local track, we had a golf car hit a car and a pit bike hit another car on the same day. I get why pit bikes need to be outlawed. If you’re truly handicapped and need a scooter to get around, ride your mobility scooter. If you’re so handicapped that you can’t safely walk to the starting gate, just pull up a chair to the fence and enjoy the races.
If theyre doing wheelies in the neighborhood they are cool. If theyre inside playing videogames they aren't cool.
Get off my lawn!!!!!
Because..... he wants to ? Because he wants to watch his kids starts ? Because he's not being a dickhead racing through the pits all day ? Because he's been doing it already with no issues ? Because he's pissed that parents let their kids race around the pits without giving a fuck and now their bullshit is splashing on him ?
This.
Also, where I live in Thousand Oaks these things are becoming a real problem. There is a park across the street from my house and it's become a popular thing to rip around at night leaving tire tracks everywhere in the grass. That's not to mention groups of 5 or more just ripping them down Lynn Road at 30mph. Oh, and kids riding these things on local hiking trails scaring the shit out of hikers and people on horseback.
Won't be long before they are public enemy number one...
They're already there in San Clemente. There's an incident almost daily. Granted this place seems like the capitol of spoiled rich kids. They're poaching the mtb trails too, one guy got hit head on and got a broken jaw among other injuries. I get it there the ultimate toys but what they don't realize is the ones doing wheelies through town in groups, running through lights etc are drawing too much unwanted attention to all y'all's. I had one kid coming towards me on El Camino Real doing a wheelie and S curving back and forth, the fuckin dumbshit crosses over the line on purpose and heads right at me like I was supposed to be intimidated I guess, he about shit when I gave the wheel a quick little turn towards him (it wasn't close) he crossed back over and gave me the evil eye lol. The kids I've talked to in the hills were cool, just kids playing in the dirt. I tell them, "Hey I don't know if it's you guys doing wheelies through town, or if you know who it is, but you need to do whatever you can to get that shit stopped, because A, you guys are already getting hit on a regular basis, B, you're absolutely pissing every Karen in this town off, and there's a lot of them and they don't seem to have jobs so they go on a mission to ban all e-bikes period. You know we used to ride dirt bikes in all these hills and we got away with it for decades because we were incognito, you should be slinking through the back streets and alleys as unnoticed as possible. The guys showing off their wheelie skills in public pissing everyone off are the opposite of what you should be doing. You guys have this ultimate playground and a few kooks are going to fuck it all up for everyone. Tell those morans to cut that shit out before it's over for all of ya". They seem like they get it. But those are the ones wearing helmets and pads and ripping around in the hills, the ones riding through town aren't so hip to hear an old fuckers opinion, even though we are "sort of" on their side. I mean we used to ride on the golf course so I'm no model citizen but you guys are going to fuck it all up for everybody. And besides, you're not that special, everyone can ride a wheelie now, it's not some rare skill anymore, you clowns are a dime a dozen 😆 Maybe our little pep talks with the ones we bump into will shed some light and possibly keep them safer some day, probably not but at least I feel like I'm trying to help teach the young pups some old dog tricks lol
