Have any of you modified your foot pegs?

I was thinking about getting the Fastway "Lowboy" pegs... until I found this old thread on ThumperTalk about modifying stock pegs:

The stock pegs have a shoulder on the bottom side that the spings slides over. Cut off the shoulder and move it to the top side. You will also have to switch the Left and Right sping. Some folks recommend welding the shoulder back on some don't. I didn't and have had no problems. This modification lowers the pegs approx 1/2" and moves them back approx 1/2".

Has anyone here tried it?

Lowering your footpegs increases the chances of snagging a foot in a rut and twisting knees and ankles.

yes I have done that modification on my RM250. Worked pretty good and never had a problem "snagging a foot, etc...." And being 6'6", I'll take whatever extra room I can get!

I bought the fastways, raised the seat and Fasst/bars on my CRF450 and it feels great. I am not so sure that the extra width of the pegs did any good though and would now opt to modify the stock pegs on my next bike.

I did it on my YZ450. Its pretty simple and works pretty good. I have the tall seat and taller bar mounts to go with it and all in all I am pretty comfortable on it. I am 6'1". I just rode a 09 CRF450 yesterday and it felt really cramped compared to my YZ.

Everyone agrees about the tall seat foam?

I'm 6'2" and all I have right now is 3/4" bar risers. I want to spend around $200 on getting the bike more comfortable. Which of these things do you guys think make the biggest difference?

-Windham bend bars (in addition to the 3/4 inch rise)

-New top clamp (or offset risers) to move the bars forward

-Tall seat foam

A SDG tall seat will compliment the 3/4" bar risers well. At 6'-5", that's my basic setup.

Did you do anything to move your bars forward?

What bar risers do you use?

I have considered modifying my footpegs but camp is right, however you may never snag and twist your knee or ankle but you will always be 1/2" closer to doing it which increases the possibility of it happening. Stick to the bar risers and the tall seat. Im 6'3 and the stock setup on my crf250 works pretty good as is.

Yeah, I have an older style Protaper billet top clamp that allows me to mount the bars 17mm forward from stock. If you ever want to eliminate the risers, the Renthal RC High bar is identical to your Windham bend, just 3/4" taller.

Anyone remember the guy who drilled holes in everything and posted it all on thumper talk. I have ridden with a few guys from there. Some are average Joes. Others are intense over the top, roll chart, gps, do everything by the book and they never get the bike started.

Those are the people that modify foot pegs. If you have a CRF, swap the pegs it lowers them. Left to right... right to left.

I ride a yz250f and I use the stock seat. Although i have Emig Racing triple clamps with a 2 inch rise. I use renthal bars with a stewart/emig bend. I am happy although i am 6" or 6'1

I use PC wide pegs and an SDG tall seat on my RM250 with Renthal bars. The seat made a huge difference in my ability to grip with my legs. Love it.

FWIW...Tall bars are not A:WAYS the answer for tall riders. It really depends on your riding style. At 6'6" I always thought that I needed the tallest bars and triple clamp setup. Yet I was never comfortable when standing. Always felt too much lower back strain. Then I looked at Travis Pastrana's setup on his old factory Suzuki. TP199 runs LOW bars and normal triple clamp risers!! I tried that setup and love it! But high seat foam is a must.

I've helped a couple of tall friends do the mod on their Yamaha's (05 YZ250 and 03 WR450). They both feel more comfortable.

mxav8r is right on though. I'm only 5'6", but tend to prefer taller, flatter bars that are mounted far forward. My 6'5" friend rides way back on the bike and doesn't like his bars any taller than mine.

Those CR double highs have a lot of old school sweep. I'd bet you would have a new favorite bar if you tried the Renthal RC High. They have a similar height but 13mm less sweep.

on my 125 I have the TAG YZ double high bars rolled a bit forward. that was the only mod I did to that bike. the 250 I put a SDG tall seat, adjustable pro taper clamp, and cr hi contour bars to open it up a bit. worked great.

I been running tall seat, bar risers for years.. On my 08 CRF I went with bar risers, fastway lowboy pegs and tall seat..The tall seat seems to take away from the cornering, I went back to stock seat with the low pegs and bar risers and its perfect now. Ive brought the sdg tall seat to the track and swapped them out throu out the day and for me 6'3 the stock seat and low pegs are the way to go.. The tall seat just makes me fell higher when railing a turn or rut and with the stock im just that little lower and feels more natural.
just my 2 cents.

The foam on the SDG breaks down so quick that your net gain afterwards are barely noticable. The seams under the tank started ripping apart after a month on mine.

Tall seat is great as you get older. It saves your knees a ton of extra work, but you tend to get lazy because of that fact.

Lower pegs are a bad idea. go with taller bars and a taller seat. The lower pegs WILL result in your large foot grabbing the ground and probably blowing your knee out sooner or later, in a G-out cornering situation or a rutted turn

IMS makes a kit for crf's that has lower footpeg mounting brackets and footpegs that are moved back about 1/2",it runs for about $130 with pegs.I am 6.4 and this helped me feel more natural when jumping and standing.I run an pro circuit clamp set with 4mm higher bar mount.Just running tall bars is not the way to go,it may feel good while standing but it feels like you are running ape hangers in the turns.

I had a tall seat before and never got really comfortable with it. I'd like to test one back to back but I'm feeling very comfortable with the stock setup as is. What's funny though, the single biggest change I've made that has helped cornering jumping and everything in between is knee braces, I picked up a set and I can't believe how much faster I've gotten because of them. Since I'm, tall I've always had trouble gripping the bike w/ my knees and now it's effortless plus im protected and I can always feel where the bike is and what it's doing.

My SDG seat has gotten pretty soft after a year of riding. Guts Racing makes better foam but their tall seat is REALLY tall.
