Am I the only one that has issue with them saying that it is a new record tonight?

Yes, they went way high and smashed previous heights in this contest,

BUT

They changed the take off height and angle as well as the landing. The changes made it much easier for the, very awesome and very talented guys to do what they did. But, Compared to years past, it is not comparable because they do not have a "standard" for the launch and landing, and without a standardized jump, it cannot be compared to other years.

Depends on which records you are talking about. Total Homeruns, No, Homeruns in a season, Yes.

all I know is that was the scariest step up competition ever

Seems like they increased the ramp height but didn't make a good enough landing. Renner and Buyten looked like they were gonna blow seals out with how hard they were landing.

For sure. I talked to Ronnie before the contest and he said that they (ESPN) wanted a record height, and had made it a lot taller than in the past. They got a record, but they also found the limit tonight. Not of how high you can go, but of how hard you can land. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Renner, Buyten, and Deegan all had injuries.

It sucks when a rider's safety is at risk so a highly promoted and live televised event can get ratings and viewers along with a new record.

We were noticing the flex in real time. Those were some hard landings.

Maybe next year they can do a 40 foot ramp and get 150' heights.

Ridiculous.

I watched it until they were around 45'. Renner looked like he was hurting. The slow-mo of the landings was pretty impressive. I'd be giving those frames and suspension components a good look-over!

I was really worried for those guys. Step up should be about the skill over getting over the bar, not a contest to see who can absorb the hardest impact on landing.

I'd say Robbie Maddison has the all-time step up record.

Those landing were really rough. I don't see how a human body can take much more height than that without breaking something. It wouldn't surprise me to hear the some of the guys did in fact break something. I also don't see everyone's bikes making it to the end without something breaking either. They all got lucky this year......but holy hell that is one scary competition.

Valid point as far as the record goes.

I doubt this ever happens, but if they wanted to lessen the impact they need to build a huge structural landing to catch the guys sooner on the way down. That, or they could move the event outside and dig a giant hole in the ground where the take off actually only comes out of the ground four feet or so, followed by the landing they were using last night. I cannot imagine what it feels like riding a dirt bike off a three story building at 5mph

Good points Hank.

If they were to build an extremely safe landing ramp....God only knows what kind of height they would be getting. I think it's safe to say the "landing" part is what is holding these guys back. They could hit that take off ramp a LOT harder than what they are doing now......but I don't think anyone is willing to flat land that SOB for a gold medal.

How? They play way more games per season than they used to so the batters get more at bats per season so the season record is using a different standard. . But lifetime totals still stand.

So we agree, I just did not express myself eloquently enough the first time.

I didn't watch it until this morning and only saw the last couple of attempts but did anyone else notice Buytens last attempt at 47' was with the bar at 44 or 45 on one side and 43 or 44 on the other.

No because 10 seasons of 120 games is not the same as 10 seasons of 162 games.

The announcers even said that the record wasn't a legitimate comparison of the previous record.

Damn, they were going high. I really enjoyed the comp, but didn't like seeing them land so hard. Hopefully they'll improve the landing, not sure what you do to improve it though.

I agree and I thought of that, only problem is most of the time they're not coming down at a good angle like Maddo was. Because their first objective is to clear the bar, they're usually higher in the front end. So the landing like the one you're talking about is good for a good angled landing, but for anyone of those guys that gets a little nose high, the harsh landing is only gonna get magnified.

It's a tough line to walk because they obviously want to be reaching greater heights and adding some life to an already great contest. But at the same time, how big is too big?

Way stupid contest. Any half skilled 909 rider could get up and over that bar. Then come down and bottom thier guts out......Wow BFD, what is the point. The danger to fun factor is way off on that stunt. TOTALLY lame, I'd be embarassed to say I even performed in that side show.

It would appear that way, but they changed it before he actually did his attempt.
