Valentino Rossi escapes serious injury in motocross crash

By Matthew Birt -

16 April 2010 15:59

Valentino Rossi was lucky to escape serious injury after the reigning MotoGP world champion suffered a heavy crash while training on a motocross bike in Italy yesterday (Thursday).

Rossi, who won his 104th Grand Prix in Qatar last weekend, had a painful right shoulder checked over by hospital staff and the 31-year-old was relieved to find no serious damage.

The Fiat Yamaha rider will be fit to ride his YZR-M1 next weekend in Japan, with Rossi enjoying more luck than some of his younger MotoGP rivals.

Two-wheeled training accidents have been the scourge of MotoGP riders in the past, with Jorge Lorenzo still not fully recovered from a badly broken right hand he suffered in February while riding a mini-bike with Carlos Checa.

Rossi’s team-mate was forced to miss the second Sepang test in Malaysia but rode to a brilliant second place in Qatar last Sunday night.

Rossi’s close pal Marco Simoncelli was less fortunate when he broke his wrist in a moto cross accident on the eve of the 2009 campaign.

The current San Carlo Gresini Honda rider missed the opening round because of the injury and he eventually lost the 2009 crown to Hiroshi Aoyama in a dramatic final round.

I caught it browsing RX twitter.

Did you see the 1st round of MotoGP last weekend? was some good shit. Bummer for Stoner, but was good to see Nicky Hayden showing some good pace, and Spies also in the top 5. The Hondas also look strong with Dovizioso on the podium. It is looking to be a great year, The Doctor is going to have his hand full with Stoner.

I was surprised to see the Ducatis getting eaten up on the long front straight. The Hondas were visibly faster. I don't follow MotoGP all that much, but that surprised me.

When Stoner got by after a few laps i had a little feeling he was going to put his bike in the gravel. I'm a huge Dovi fan and i love the way that Honda is running. Spies impressed me alot ! It' hard to tell how a WSB rider will adapt to motogp but he was haulin' ass. He had Dovi and Hayden in view the whole race.

Who do you think is taking the title this year ?

Thanks Scottie. I haven't kept up with motoGP the last few years. I need to set my DVR and watch this season.

Man it is really hard to bet against the Doctor, but Stoner is going to be tough, those Ducks are pretty dialed.

So ill jsut hope for a season long battle that comes down to the wire...with Rossi holding up the big trophy at the season final race Cool

Three Americans in the top ten is pretty cool. Doviziosos' pass to get back by Hayden was crazy, I didn't think he was gonna hold his line as well as he did.

Why don't american road racers have the issues with Europe that the MX'ers do with food and cultural problems?

Hayden and Edwards have been over there awhile now so that maybe why, but Spies is new this year. Maybe he will take some time to transition? I really have no idea though. Good question.

I'm going with Rossi because i don't want to doubt the genius that he is on a bike.

Did you get a chance to watch the 125 and moto2 races ? That's where all the bar banging is at.

Speaking of bar banging i'm looking out for fireworks between Simoncelli and Bautista.

Pedrosa had some pretty bad handling issues and is getting a whole new frame so he'll be fighting for wins soon.

I don't really like him either. He has the best job in the world and is the moodiest little shit ever.

Spies is new to moto GP but it's his second year in europe, world super bike last year. I think is what you meant to say.

Stoner pushes so hard to stretch the lead in the first few laps that I wasn't surprised to see him go down so quickly. Rossi looked comfortable, I think he could have stretched a bigger lead but settled into what he had to stay safe with Stoner down. Hayden was impressive, was a shame to see him get passed but what a great move by Dovi. I think Spies will be on the podium before the next two rounds are over. Lorenzo rode pretty tough as well.

Glad to see some guys enjoying other forms of 2wheeler racing.

Moto GP is my favorite racing besides MX. Rossi is probably the best of all time.I would not bet against him this year. Looks like the same contenders as last year, Rossi,Lorenzo and stoner. Hopefully Dovi can stick it to pedrosa all year and maybe Spies can get on a factory ride next year.

I dont think the food and culture difference is actually such a big deal anymore. It may have been in the past, but unless a team truck breaks down in a small rural village in say, Hungary for example, I shouldnt think its much of a problem.

The riders will be pretty well looked after wherever they go and when they're not on the road they probably all live in big cities.

I doubt it next week cause he has never been to the track in Japan. I know he went to a bunch of new tracks in WSK but, Moto GP is the cream of the crop.Spies will be on the podium this year just not at Japan. (IMO)

Have to wonder how many world titles Mick Doohan would have won if he didn't get banged up so bad. That guy was an animal.

Because there is considerably more money involved, and MotoGP is actually considered the top of that sport.

I personally love watching all 3 classes. Great to see Hayden pull through and finally come to grips with an 800. He has suffered badly from the displacement drop, I really didn't expect him to still have a job. While Stoner did throw it down the road I really can't count the guy out yet. If he rattles off a few wins he's right back in it.

MotoGP is awesome and the first race was 25 laps of beauty. Love it. Those guys are nuts-200 plus mph? Don't want to get off running at two bills! The Doctor is amazing-can't bet against him but I'm hoping Hayden stays in the mix every week end.

Looking forward to see how Spies will progress this year that guy is really talented and driven, podiums and maybe a win aren't out of his reach.

Rossi will be hard to beat for the series though, he has so much feel for a bike and so much intelligence. Stoner made a huge mistake and is already 25 points back which addes to the pressure. Lorenzo is awesome he could be the main challenger with Stoner at a deficit now, he and Stoner are the only ones not intimidate by Rossi I think.

I don't believe that Spies is intimidated by anyone but unfortunately doesn't quite have the bike to consistantly win - this year.
