To respond to some of the questions from way back in the thread...
- Yup, Hill runs the Tech 7s. Guess he likes the boots lighter and softer.
- No we didn't need to recharge the bike between rounds, though we did top it off between qual and night show. The battery is sized for a moto, so 1 lap on straight rhythm is just a few percent of capacity. The whole finals was no problem, we just posted up those other bikes by the start to hopefully snag some extra jumbotron time.
- We had a pretty big deficit suspension-wise to the KTMs. We only got our first set of WP A-Kit last week and were still dialing it in at a pretty coarse level yesterday. It's different than the factory kit they're running and they obviously have had a lot more time to get it dialed. Josh runs crazy stiff settings that I'm pretty sure would rip my feet right off my legs if I tried them, so we needed a lot more time to get it right for him from the base tune. Related, he also rides what I consider a completely unrideable throttle map. Dude is truly a different class of human.
- Torque is not a problem. We have more torque everywhere than a 250, except when the 250 is in first gear. But no one can use all of the torque in 1st gear, which is why everyone does their starts in second.
Overall, we're pinching ourselves. Our whole company is smaller than KTMs MX/SX race program. This was our first ever motocross style event other than some practice laps at Mammoth. Josh was coming out of retirement and back from a horrific injury. We were literally handed our suspension a few days before the race and not allowed to open it up. And then the tiny detail of completely new drivetrain tech. So many reasons this was just a terrible idea.
For us to run at Kyle's level on our first outing is crazy. Can't describe the feeling after that 3rd run in the quarters, but you could see it on Josh's face in the interviews, and literally everyone at Alta was feeling the exact same thing at the same moment. One of my all time best moments, and we're just getting started.
As an aside, Josh is such an awesome guy and crazy talent to work with. Been out of the game for 3 years, and coming back straight into high-consequence competition on clean-sheet equipment is asking so much of any rider. Not only is he the nicest dude on the planet, but he is such a technician when it comes to development, practice and racing. He was so methodical and precise, you could see it in his practice runs... he never came up short, he just kept piecing in a new bigger line each run and nailing it. He's the perfect guy to help us and we're so stoked to have him on the Redshift.
